World Earth Day: Greens call for need to make renewable energy a way of life
Hyderabad: As we celebrate the World Earth Day on Tuesday, environmentalists stressed that there is an immediate need to adopt various sources of renewable energy (especially solar energy), as it is a perfect sustainable way to combat the climate crisis.
This year's theme is 'Our Power, Our Planet' and the main aim is to bring attention to the serious issue of the adoption of natural resources. In that regard, many voluntary organisations are planning various awareness campaigns on promoting renewable energy.
Environmentalists have highlighted that a rapid transition to renewable energy can have impact on natural resources and local communities. It is crucial to move toward an energy system that takes into account both the low costs and the benefits to nature at every stage. In this context, solar energy and biomass are key resources for safeguarding the climate.
Narasimha Reddy, an environmentalist, said, 'As per the recent data released by the Electricity Department, in April this month, around 17,000 megawatt of energy has been consumed; 90 per cent is coming from thermal energy, so we need to change to solar energy in four sectors – residential, commercial, industrial and agriculture. It would be beneficial for the government to introduce various innovative initiatives. Instead of relying heavily on thermal energy, solar panels should be installed wherever feasible. Additionally, the development of electricity through biogas should be actively promoted. Currently, biogas is used in only a few areas, but it should be adopted more widely across all sectors.'
Sai Teja, an environmental enthusiast, said, 'In the context of Telangana, solar energy stands out as the most suitable source. The Union Government is already encouraging the adoption of solar power by offering subsidies to the public. It would be highly beneficial if the Telangana Government also implemented similar initiatives. This would not only benefit consumers but also promote wider adoption. Additionally, the State should actively encourage people and conduct widespread publicity campaigns to raise awareness and support for solar energy.'
'Renewable energy is our true power to protect the planet. In Telangana, solar energy stands out as the best source due to abundant sunlight throughout the year. It is clean, sustainable, and ideal for decentralised rural power. Telangana's solar parks and rooftop projects are transforming energy access while reducing carbon emissions. I believe solar power empowers communities, creates green jobs, and safeguards our natural resources. Embracing this energy aligns with Earth Day's theme—our planet's future depends on how wisely we harness our power today for a greener tomorrow,' said Mohammed Abid Ali, an environmental activist.

Basavaraj Bommai accuses CM Siddaramaiah of making false statements on funds
BENGALURU: Karnatakawill receive over Rs 1 lakh crore more under the 15th Finance Commission compared to the 14th Finance Commission, BJP Member of Parliament from Haveri, Basavaraj Bommai has said. Bommai said that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is making political statements against the Union Government as he is unable to allocate funds for the guarantee schemes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi increased the Central grant share from 32% to 42%, Bommai said, and added that though Siddaramaiah is aware of it, he deliberately conceals. Accusing Siddaramaiah of repeatedly making false statements, Bommai, a former chief minister, said that during the discussions on the 14th Finance Commission, five Congress ministers were present, but they failed to advocate effectively for the state, and are now trying to cover up their mistakes with such statements. The former chief minister said that the state has already received as much as it got during the 14th Finance Commission period, and funds will continue to come. During the UPA regime, Karnataka got only Rs 700 crore for Railway projects, he said. 'This year, the Centre has allocated Rs 7,700 crore. However, the state government is unable to provide the matching grants,' Bommai said. Caste survey On the proposed caste survey, Bommai said that the authority to conduct a caste survey lies with the Union Government and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is trying to mislead the backward classes. Bommai said that Siddaramaiah was in a tight spot over the issue, and the high command had to step in to rescue him. On the ongoing wars in West Asia, the BJP MP termed Israel's attack on Iran shocking. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine war is already affecting the world significantly, the MP said, adding that all global leaders must work towards halting wars. On Friday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had stated that Karnataka annually contributes Rs 4.5 lakh crore in taxes to the Centre but gets only 15 paise against 1 Rupee in the devolution of taxes and this injustice should not happen in the 16th Finance Commission recommendation.

"Shameful betrayal of anti-colonial legacy": Pawan Khera questions India's abstention from UNGA proposal on Gaza ceasefire
New Delhi [India], June 14 (ANI): Congress leader Pawan Khera slammed the Union Government over India's stance of abstaining during voting at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) over the ceasefire in Gaza. He termed it as an act of 'shameful betrayal' of the country's 'anti-colonial legacy'. On Friday, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a permanent resolution demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. In a detailed 'X' post, Pawan Khera highlighted India's history of standing with Palestine and the Palestine Liberation Organisation. Khera stated that India became the first non arab nation to recognise Palestine in 1974 and invited PLO leader Yasser Arafat to attend the 7th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit held in New Delhi in 1983. Pawan Khera criticised the Union Government and mentioned that it 'grovels' before Tel Aviv in the present time, forgetting its principles that once made the country a moral compass of the world. He further accused the Union Government of taking a 'U-Turn' from India's December 2024 UNGA vote in favour of the Gaza ceasefire, which has proved that the government remembers 'nothing'. Pawan Khera also highlighted a BJP MP's 'theatrics of glorifying India's support of Palestine' exposes the abstention as an 'epitome of hypocrisy and this government's schizophrenic foreign policy.' The Congress leader further mentioned that global leadership cannot be built on 'silence' and 'sycophancy'. He said that India's strength has always been from the moral weight of its choice, and if the country refuses to defend innocent lives overseas, then it also impacts moral capital, which protects Indian lives abroad. Targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pawan Khera said that his complicity has 'abandoned India's conscience' as Israel continues to bomb Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and now Iran. He also stated that the world never listens to a nation which speaks loudly but to a nation that speaks with clarity, courage and conscience. A total of 149 countries voted in favour of a ceasefire in Gaza in the UNGA; meanwhile, 19 countries abstained and 12 nations voted against the resolution. (ANI)
