SuperSport survive dreaded playoffs in game of two halves, and three months
The Betway Premiership season has officially, finally, come to an end with SuperSport United surviving the dreaded promotion play-offs with a 1-1 draw with Golden Arrows at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Thursday.
This second half, which ended without goals, was a continuation of the match that was abandoned at half time on February 23, three months ago, due to Lucas Moripe's lights going out amid a power failure with the score level at 1-1 at half time.
At that time, SuperSport opened the scoring after four minutes through the effort of Christian Saile and that goal was cancelled out in the 24th minute by Velemseni Ndwandwe for Arrows.
SuperSport, whose future remains in doubt with rumours the club is on sale, are equal on 27 points with Cape Town City but they have a better goal-difference and they have saved their status in the PSL.

This means City, who finished 15th, go to the play-offs where they will play against Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) sides Orbit College and Casric Stars — pending an arbitration involving MFC champions Durban City — to save their PSL status.
It is not known whether this is the end of this matter because City's boss John Comitis is believed to be seeking legal advice to challenge the validity of this match, where two halves were played three months apart.
According to the rules, the game should resume with all personnel who were involved that day and yellow cards in place but both scorers Saile and Ndwandwe were not in the match-day squads, presumably due to injury. Both sides' coaches had also changed, Andre Arendse replacing Gavin Hunt at Matsatsantsa and Manqoba Mngithi coming in for Kagisho Dikgacoi and Musa Bilankulu, who became his assistants, at Arrows.
Ordinarily the 16th-placed Premiership side is automatically relegated and 15th team goes to the promotion-relegation playoffs. This season, due to Royal AM's expulsion, only the 15-positioned side goes to the playoffs, with no side dropping automatically.
Faced with a situation where a defeat could have resulted in devastating consequences, Arendse went with a strong line-up of players like the Bafana Bafana duo of Ricardo Goss and Nyiko Mobbie, former national captain Thulani Hlatshwayo, Ime Okon, Lebohang Maboe, Sipheshihle Ndlovu, Samir Nurković and Lyle Lakay.
Mngqithi picked a strong combination too, which included key players like Isimail Watenga, Gladwin Shitolo, Brandon Theron, Nduduzo Sibiya, Nhlanhla Zwane and Lungelo Dube.
Arrows ended the season in 12th place and Mngqithi has a lot of work to do during the off-season to recruit players who will help the team be consistent next campaign.
There was relief at the final whistle with SuperSport players and members of staff in wild celebrations but the issue remains about the continued status of the club that has three league titles.

Birthday girl Kgothatso Montjane wins Round 1 match at Roland-Garros
South African star Kgothatso Montjane won her first round wheelchair match against Chile's Macarena Cabrillana 6-3, 6-3 in windy conditions on court 11 at Roland-Garros on Tuesday. The win coincided with Montjane's 39th birthday. She mentioned that she was very chuffed when arriving at Roland-Garros this morning, she was asked if she was competing in the junior event! Prior to the commencement of the match, Kgothatso Montjane had some equipment issues with a broken strap on her wheelchair. It was repaired and then the repairs had to be redone. 'It's time for a new chair. This one is six-years-old. It might be tired.' Thankfully, the chair issues did not impact Montjane's performance, although there were some anxious moments prior to the match. 'I was just hopeful that they (organisers) would get me going.' There were potential issues with Montjane not being able to stay in her chair if the strap was not able to be repaired. 'If the strap was unable to be repaired, it would have made it challenging for the umpire as the rules state that I must be in the chair at all times.' Regarding her win, Montjane was not totally satisfied with her performance. 'It was a good win, but I honestly feel like it could have been better. 'I made the match difficult for myself. I felt like that I didn't use the court really well. 'I dropped quite a lot of balls short.' There were some positives for Montjane. 'However, I played well under pressure. After taking the lead in the first set, I felt like I should have taken control. 'I'm glad I managed to seal it up. 'It could be better. I'm not happy with the complete play.' Kgothatso Montjane described wanting more patience on her opponents serve. 'I was moving in too early, I had to wait and then I killed the momentum. 'I like it more when my opponent serves faster, and the ball has more energy. 'Otherwise, I have to create the energy myself.' Montjane outlined some areas of improvement she would like for her next match. 'I want to be more consistent, hit with more depth, and put more speed on the ball. I want more topspin with my forehand so that I don't continue to hit the balls long.' The conditions on court 11 consisted of a strong, swirling wind. 'The wind made it hard for my ball toss and I found it tricky to work out which way that the wind was blowing.' Kgothatso Montjane admitted that she was unlikely to celebrate her birthday as she is currently battling a neck injury as a result 'of playing for the last three weeks.' 'All I want to do is shower, get my neck worked on, and get as much rest as I can.' Montjane revealed that she supports Kaizer Chiefs and Manchester United. Kaizer Chiefs finished ninth in the recently-concluded Betway Premiership, while Manchester United fared even worse, ending 15th in the English Premier League. Kgothatso Montjane will need to show as much determination as it took supporting those teams this season when she next plays! Cleared of all wrongdoing in a high-stakes player registration dispute, the newly crowned Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) winners are now set to take their place in South Africa's top flight for the 2025/26 season. City were officially found not guilty regarding the eligibility of one of their players on Tuesday after they were twice forced to defend themselves in disciplinary proceedings. JDR Stars lodged a protest in May, claiming that Saziso Magawana, who had joined from Marumo Gallants, had been improperly registered when he moved to the club. The PSL's Disciplinary Committee investigated the matter and dismissed the complaint. Stars exercised their right to appeal, this time joined by relegation-threatened Cape Town Spurs, but this past week their appeal was also dismissed by Safa arbitration. City were finally awarded the MFC title and secured their place in the Betway Premiership next season. As a result of the failed protest, both JDR Stars and the Cape side were ordered to cover all the expenses arising from their actions against City and the player involved. Following the final ruling, City chairman Farook Kadodia expressed his satisfaction with the outcome. 'The outcome of the arbitration was what we expected,' Kadodia told Independent Newspapers on Wednesday. 'We were basically embarrassed in relation to the arbitration and dispute resolution chamber, even though we had already won our initial case with the PSL. The matter went to arbitration, and the outcome was very clear.' Kadodia added that, despite the team's efforts throughout the season, they were denied the chance to enjoy the celebrations they had earned. 'It was really disappointing that the players weren't able to celebrate with the trophy and be officially recognised as champions on the pitch,' he said. 'I haven't spoken to anyone from the PSL yet — my only communication has been with Safa. I'm still not sure whether there will be any formal trophy celebrations.' 'You put in so much work all season long, and when you finally achieve something meaningful, you want to enjoy it. Then you go home. Some players are still around because they were waiting for the result of the case.' The chairman also emphasised that the verdict came as no surprise to the club, as they had always maintained their innocence and followed the correct procedures.
