SuperSport survive dreaded playoffs in game of two halves, and three months

TimesLIVE29-05-2025
The Betway Premiership season has officially, finally, come to an end with SuperSport United surviving the dreaded promotion play-offs with a 1-1 draw with Golden Arrows at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Thursday.
This second half, which ended without goals, was a continuation of the match that was abandoned at half time on February 23, three months ago, due to Lucas Moripe's lights going out amid a power failure with the score level at 1-1 at half time.
At that time, SuperSport opened the scoring after four minutes through the effort of Christian Saile and that goal was cancelled out in the 24th minute by Velemseni Ndwandwe for Arrows.
SuperSport, whose future remains in doubt with rumours the club is on sale, are equal on 27 points with Cape Town City but they have a better goal-difference and they have saved their status in the PSL.

This means City, who finished 15th, go to the play-offs where they will play against Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) sides Orbit College and Casric Stars — pending an arbitration involving MFC champions Durban City — to save their PSL status.
It is not known whether this is the end of this matter because City's boss John Comitis is believed to be seeking legal advice to challenge the validity of this match, where two halves were played three months apart.
According to the rules, the game should resume with all personnel who were involved that day and yellow cards in place but both scorers Saile and Ndwandwe were not in the match-day squads, presumably due to injury. Both sides' coaches had also changed, Andre Arendse replacing Gavin Hunt at Matsatsantsa and Manqoba Mngithi coming in for Kagisho Dikgacoi and Musa Bilankulu, who became his assistants, at Arrows.
Ordinarily the 16th-placed Premiership side is automatically relegated and 15th team goes to the promotion-relegation playoffs. This season, due to Royal AM's expulsion, only the 15-positioned side goes to the playoffs, with no side dropping automatically.
Faced with a situation where a defeat could have resulted in devastating consequences, Arendse went with a strong line-up of players like the Bafana Bafana duo of Ricardo Goss and Nyiko Mobbie, former national captain Thulani Hlatshwayo, Ime Okon, Lebohang Maboe, Sipheshihle Ndlovu, Samir Nurković and Lyle Lakay.
Mngqithi picked a strong combination too, which included key players like Isimail Watenga, Gladwin Shitolo, Brandon Theron, Nduduzo Sibiya, Nhlanhla Zwane and Lungelo Dube.
Arrows ended the season in 12th place and Mngqithi has a lot of work to do during the off-season to recruit players who will help the team be consistent next campaign.
There was relief at the final whistle with SuperSport players and members of staff in wild celebrations but the issue remains about the continued status of the club that has three league titles.

Orlando Pirates coach makes promise ahead of Sundowns clash

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has made a bold promise to the fans after a poor start to the 2025/26 season. Despite winning the MTN8 quarter-final clash against Polokwane City in his first match, the Moroccan coach lost back-to-back Betway Premiership matches in a space of three days. His bad league start has already put him under pressure. With the club looking to defend the MTN8 and challenge for the league, Ouaddou needs his players to turn the corner. On Saturday, the Buccaneers host Mamelodi Sundowns in the first leg of the MTN8 semi-final. 'I can understand our fans because they love the club, everywhere in the country and in Africa, they are passionate people and they are the 12th man,' Ouaddou said as per FARPost . 'So in every club in Africa, when you start the way we started, there'll be disappointments, but we can promise them that we're going to bounce back. 'We're going to sweat on our shirts to represent the badge very well in the right way in order to bring them happiness; it's only the beginning,' said the Orlando Pirates coach. The Buccaneers have won three MTN8 titles in a row under Jose Riveiro. Ouaddou's first mission is to defend the trophy but failure to do so could see more supporters calling for his head. The coach has promised Orlando Pirates faithful that he will turn the corner, but with three matches played, the team doesn't look like they can compete against Mamelodi Sundowns. Kaizer Chiefs starting 11: How Velebayi fits in

Asanele Velebayi is Kaizer Chiefs' brand new attacker. The 22-year-old winger from Cape Town Spurs officially signed for Amakhosi on a long-term deal. The move comes after a ruling by the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber declared him a free agent, allowing Kaizer Chiefs to secure his services without a transfer fee. Velebayi's versatility allows him to play on either wing or in an attacking midfield role. Given the current squad, he is expected to slot in on the right wing, replacing Gaston Sirino, who, at 34, is set to become an impact player from the bench. Thembinkosi Lorch and Neo Maema head Mamelodi Sundowns' big-name exodus

Thembinkosi Lorch turning out for Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in the Botola Pro 1. Image: BACKPAGEPIX Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the exits of Thembinkosi Lorch and Neo Maema, marking another chapter in a busy clear-out ahead of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season. Lorch's departure comes after weeks of speculation surrounding his future, with a return to North Africa now on the cards. The Bafana Bafana international spent the second half of last season on loan at Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca, where he delivered a string of impressive displays in both the Botola Pro League and the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States. The 32-year-old was a standout in Morocco, scoring twice in the league and netting against Juventus in the Club World Cup, while also featuring against Manchester City and Al Ain. His ability to run at defenders and create moments in big matches made him a fan favourite at the Red Castle, even after the departure of coach Rulani Mokwena, with whom he had reunited in Casablanca. Sundowns confirmed on Thursday night that Lorch would not be returning to Chloorkop. Welcome back Nyoso 🫱🏿‍🫲🏻⏳️⏳️⏳️ — Wydad Red Castle (@WydadRedCastle) August 14, 2025 Video Player is loading. After two unforgettable years, one league title, 26 appearances, seven goals, and four assists, the Yellow Nation thanks and celebrates Thembinkosi Lorch,' Sundowns said in a statement on their social media platforms. ' Lorch joined Sundowns in January 2024 from Orlando Pirates, but despite flashes of quality, he struggled to establish himself in the squad, especially after Miguel Cardoso's arrival as head coach. Hot on the heels of that announcement, Sundowns also confirmed the exit of Maema, who leaves the Brazilians after four trophy-laden years. The 29-year-old midfielder arrived in 2021 from Bloemfontein Celtic and went on to make over 100 appearances, scoring 13 goals and providing 14 assists. I pray that this thing of releasing players won't backfire, considering the amount of games our team plays every season🤞 — Lethu Godide (@SiphosethuNtul1) August 15, 2025
