Govt to roll out 90-day programme to improve burial ground facilities in Mumbai

Indian Express5 days ago
Maharashtra Industries Minister Uday Samant on Monday informed the state Assembly that the government will roll out a 90-day programme aimed at improving burial ground facilities across Mumbai.
The announcement followed a calling attention motion raised by BJP MLA Manisha Chaudhari regarding the condition of the Kandarpada burial ground in Dahisar.
Samant said the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been instructed to survey plots reserved for burial grounds under the city's Development Plan (DP).
Chaudhari also flagged public health concerns stemming from the absence of a disinfection mechanism at the burial grounds.
'Based on the survey findings and local requirements, these reserved plots will be developed accordingly. Within 90 days, we will finalise the reservations and allocate funds,' Samant said.
Currently, the BMC manages 10 burial grounds for Christians, while 42 are under private management.
For the Muslim community, the civic body manages 17 burial grounds, and 67 are privately managed.
Samant further stated that a dedicated committee will be constituted to draft a comprehensive framework for cremation and burial services across urban local bodies.
'The framework will consider population growth, urban expansion, and land availability. All processes will align with National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) guidelines,' he added.
Congress MLA Aslam Shaikh and Samajwadi Party's Raees Shaikh also pointed out the need to expedite the decomposition process for buried bodies.
Responding to this, Samant acknowledged that burials continue to follow traditional practices, without any disinfection procedures in place.

Suvendu Adhikari's call to stay off Kashmir riles own party, NC slams it as ‘terrorism'

File photo: Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari (Picture credit: PTI) SRINAGAR: Bengal BJP leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari's comments advising Bengal's people not to travel to Kashmir have drawn fire in J&K, with his own party repudiating the statement and the governing National Conference (NC) equating it with 'terrorism'. 'Kashmir is the crown of India, an integral part of our motherland. Every Indian holds Kashmir close to his heart,' former J&K BJP chief Ravinder Raina said in a video message where she asked Adhikari to visit the Valley and witness firsthand the 'patriotism of Kashmiris'. Adhikari had advised Bengal's people against going to places 'where Muslims are in a majority'. 'If you want to visit Kashmir, visit Jammu.' Referring to the Pahalgam terror attack, Adhikari said tourists were 'selectively killed' and advised people to visit Himachal Pradesh or Uttarakhand instead. Raina contested Adhikari's version of events. 'After the Pahalgam terror attack, it was local Kashmiris who rescued the wounded and later sheltered tourists to ensure their safety. Thousands of Kashmiris have laid down their lives for the nation's unity and security. Many of our own BJP workers from Kashmir were killed by terrorists. Countless Kashmiri policemen and security personnel have been martyred defending the country. If the Tricolour flies proudly in Kashmir today, it is because of the sacrifices and patriotism of Kashmiris,' Raina said. Adhikari's comments came after a meeting between J&K CM Omar Abdullah and Bengal's Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata on Thursday. After the talks, Mamata had appealed to the people of her state to travel to Kashmir and support its tourism. She also accepted Omar's invitation to visit the Valley, promising to do so after Durga Puja in Sept. Mamata's TMC has slammed Adhikari's comments, accusing him of indulging in a 'disgraceful, calculated act of communal provocation' and 'pushing the message of terrorists at home'. On Saturday, Omar's NC echoed the condemnation. NC spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq said he did not find 'any difference between him (Suvendu) and terrorists' and pointed out that the statement was contrary to efforts by the Centre and J&K govt to revive tourism. 'Terrorists also wanted that no one should visit Kashmir and this person (Adhikari) is saying the same. If you want to condemn the Pahalgam terror attack, you must visit Kashmir,' Sadiq added.

TMC-BJP war of words after 2 found dead in Khejuri

1 2 Khejuri: The deaths of two persons under mysterious circumstances on the sidelines of a local function at Khejuri in East Midnapore on Friday night have sparked a tussle among rival political parties. The bodies of Sujit Das, 23, of Purba Bhangonmari, and Sudhir Chandra Paik, 65, of Jhantihari, were found at the venue of a 'jalsa' at Bhangonmari village. While BJP claimed they were murdered, Trinamool said a police investigation would uncover the truth. Locals said the duo might have been electrocuted after a halogen light fell on them. In a statement on X, Bengal leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari said the victims had gone to attend a Muharram festival at the Janaka area of Khejuri last night when they were murdered. He named seven people allegedly responsible for the deaths, including a local TMC neta. "The presence of injury marks and blood stains on the deceased suggest suspicious circumstances behind these deaths," he said. Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said: "This constant attempt to lace everything with religious poison to incite people is disgraceful politics." 'Lakshman Rekha': After Bihar, ECI Readies For Electoral Roll Revision In Bengal

Last Updated: The ECI said in Supreme Court, 'Bihar is just the beginning. Bengal is next, and the exercise will be conducted across the entire nation." The Election Commission on Thursday, during a hearing in Supreme Court, indicated that West Bengal, set to go to polls in 2026, may see the Systematic Investigation and Review (SIR) exercise soon, like Bihar. 'Bihar is just the beginning. Bengal is next, and the exercise will be conducted across the entire nation," the poll body said in the apex court. This statement signals that the SIR process will soon begin in Bengal. Sources have told News18 that the Bengal Election Commission team is already prepared for the exercise. A senior officer of the Commission in Kolkata said, 'There should be a Lakshman Rekha for everyone and for all institutions. The ECI is going to be very strict this time regarding bogus and ineligible voters. We are waiting for the ECI's SIR order, and we are ready to act on it." This statement clearly indicates that the Bengal team is ready to implement the process as soon as the orders come in. Meanwhile, the booth rationalisation exercise is already underway. This aims to ensure a proportionate number of voters in each booth, with no booth having more than 1,200 voters, as directed by the Commission. Sources within the EC say this will not be a difficult task. There are over 7.62 crore voters in Bengal, and enumeration forms will have to be distributed to all of them. Following this, draft electoral rolls will be published, allowing time for claims and corrections. A large number of booth-level officers will be engaged in this process. After the entire procedure, the final rolls will be released. SIR involves door-to-door verification to include eligible voters and remove ineligible or duplicate entries, ensuring a clean and transparent electoral roll. This revision addresses issues arising from urbanisation, migration, and unreported deaths, and it also aims to prevent illegal immigrants from being included in the list. In Bengal, the Trinamool Congress is vehemently opposing the SIR exercise. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has stated that it is more dangerous than the NRC, while TMC MP Mahua Moitra has already filed a case against it. On the other hand, the BJP has welcomed the move, alleging that the TMC is opposing it because its Muslim vote bank will be adversely affected. Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendhu Adhikari said, 'There are a lot of fake voters in Bengal. Infiltrators are also listed as voters. This has to be cleansed… What is happening in Bihar should also happen in West Bengal." view comments First Published: July 10, 2025, 17:09 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
