BJP pays tributes to Darbar Sahib ‘shaheedan', but then deletes post; move triggers debate

Jalandhar: To mark the 41st anniversary of the army action at Darbar Sahib in June 1984, the Punjab unit of BJP on Sunday appeared to have taken a major shift in its stance through a post on its social media accounts.

It paid a tribute to the "shaheedan" (martyrs) of the "day one" of the "attack" on Darbar Sahib, using expressions that Sikhs have used from the start. However, the post was soon retracted.
The BJP posted: "1 June 1984 - Saka (cataclysmic event) Blue Star – Humble tribute to all the martyrs of day one of the attack on Darbar Sahib by the Congress govt." It also used pictures of the damaged Akal Takht and an armoured army vehicle with deflated tyres, watched by three army men.
Calling the army action an "attack on Darbar Sahib" was not a first for the Punjab BJP; Prime Minister Narendra Modi first used it in Aug 2023 in Parliament. However, using the expression "shaheedan" for "all" those killed on day one and paying them tributes reflected the biggest shift so far. Calling it "saka" was also new for the BJP.
The Sikh community has been using this term from the start.
The post received mixed response and triggered a debate within BJP.
After over three hours, the post was deleted from Punjab BJP's Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) accounts.
Initially, in 1984, Congress and BJP appeared to be on the same page regarding the army action, as it was projected or perceived as the "only option left" or "unavoidable". However, years later, BJP started showing a major shift. Although, for the last few years, even Congress leaders have not been justifying the army action, BJP leaders appear to be gradually shifting their stance on the controversial action.

Yet, the saffron party has not been going to the other side of the spectrum, which is taking a position or using expressions used by the Sikhs. The social media post on Sunday reflected a tectonic shift, but its deletion reflected not only the dilemma, but also perhaps consideration of a section of its constituency.
For the BJP, late Arun Jaitley was the first to call the army action a "historical blunder". Jaitley's statement had come during a press conference in Jalandhar on April 18, 2009, in the run-up to the parliamentary elections that year, whenhe was BJP's general secretary.
On Aug 10, 2023, PM Modi made the first significant departure from the Centre's position on Operation Bluestar, when he called the army action "an attack on Akal Takht". He said this while replying to a no-confidence motion against him in Parliament.
"Akal Takht was attacked and it is still in our memory. They became habituated from Mizoram and due to this, they went on to attack Akal Takht. This happens in our own country and here they are sermonising us," said the PM as he criticised the Congress and actions by then PM Indira Gandhi's govt, including the use of air raids by the Indian Air Force on "helpless citizens in Mizoram" in 1966.
On Sep 18 last year, BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh called the army action an "assault" on Darbar Sahib as he criticised Punjab Congress for defending the Gandhi family.

PM Modi to flag off Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat, inaugurate world's highest Chenab rail bridge

PM to inaugurate Chenab rail bridge NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the world's highest railway bridge, built over the Chenab River in Reasi district on June 6. Union minister Jitendra Singh confirmed this on Tuesday. Along with the bridge, the Prime Minister will also launch the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat train service. In a post on X, Jitendra Singh wrote: "Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the Chenab Bridge on 6th June... History in the making. Just 3 days to go! The mighty Chenab Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, stands tall in Jammu and Kashmir..." The Chenab railway bridge, now officially part of the Katra to Sangaldan rail section, stands as the world's highest railway arch bridge. This will be the first-ever train link connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India. The bridge towers 359 meters above the Chenab River, surpassing even the Eiffel Tower in height. For the first time, Kashmir will be directly linked to the rest of India via rail. This bridge is a key component of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which spans 272 kilometers and includes 36 tunnels totaling 119 kilometers and nearly 1,000 bridges. The terrain's complexity and the region's seismic sensitivity posed major engineering challenges, but Indian engineers successfully executed this ambitious project, a feat many once deemed impossible. Railway officials highlighted the Chenab Bridge's structural strength, mentioning that it can withstand wind speeds over 250 km/h and was built using about 30,000 metric tons of steel. One foundation, known as S20, is so massive it covers nearly one-third of a football field, specifying the scale and vision behind the structure. The entire USBRL project represents not just engineering excellence but also New India's resolve and determination. With electric engines powered by specially designed overhead equipment (OHE) and advanced tunnel safety systems, the railway line is built for resilience and long-term service. The train service was earlier planned to begin on April 19 but was postponed after cancellation of PM Modi's visit due to bad weather. After the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, this railway project now holds even more importance than before. "Terrorism a global threat, many attacks linked to Pakistan": Ambassador Sujan Chinoy in Liberia

Monrovia [Liberia], June 3 (ANI): Highlighting the global nature of terrorism, former Ambassador Sujan Chinoy reiterated India's long-standing concerns over cross-border terrorism and stressed Pakistan's role in harbouring terror groups. 'Terrorism is indeed a global threat today. India has long suffered from cross-border terrorism. For a very long time, it was understood that terrorism in South Asia is essentially a problem between India and Pakistan. But post September 11th, 2001, it became very clear to the world that all the terrorist attacks that have taken place have some linkage with Pakistan. It harbours a huge number of terrorist organisations...' Chinoy said. He further underscored India's consistent position, stating, '...For a very long time, it was understood that terrorism in South Asia is a matter between India and Pakistan. But post September 11, 2001, it became clear to the world that all the terrorist attacks that have taken place have some linkage with Pakistan. India has always been talking about it...' Chinoy's remarks came during his address in Monrovia, Liberia, as part of ongoing diplomatic outreach focused on security cooperation and counter-terrorism. Alongside him, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader SS Ahluwalia emphasised that terrorism is a global concern, not just India's problem. 'It is not a matter of concern for India only. Our visionary PM, Narendra Modi, visualises that in isolation, one nation cannot fight or finish this monster. Today, if it is eliminated in India, then tomorrow, it will appear in another country, because their (Pakistan's) economy runs on this, and they extract money out of it. Today, if you find any terrorist activity in the world, its investigation will lead to Pakistan,' Ahluwalia said. BJP MP Atul Garg addressed Pakistan's internal political instability, stating, 'Every PM of Pakistan is either jailed... Continuously, the GDP of Pakistan is decreasing... Pakistan has nothing to lose.' BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj called for global unity against terrorism, stressing, 'Terrorism is not a problem of any region... At this time, the whole world should stand together against terrorism. The terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 was a murder of humanity.' The delegation, led by Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde, includes BJP MPs Bansuri Swaraj, Atul Garg, Manan Kumar Mishra, Indian Union Muslim League's ET Mohammed Basheer, Biju Janata Dal's Sasmit Patra, BJP leader SS Ahluwalia, and former Ambassador Sujan Chinoy. This group aims to brief international partners on India's response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and its broader fight against cross-border terrorism while engaging with leaders in key countries. This multi-party delegation, consisting of seven groups led by one MP each, has been initiated to counter global misinformation and highlight India's zero-tolerance policy on terrorism. (ANI)
