"Terrorism a global threat, many attacks linked to Pakistan": Ambassador Sujan Chinoy in Liberia
Monrovia [Liberia], June 3 (ANI): Highlighting the global nature of terrorism, former Ambassador Sujan Chinoy reiterated India's long-standing concerns over cross-border terrorism and stressed Pakistan's role in harbouring terror groups.
'Terrorism is indeed a global threat today. India has long suffered from cross-border terrorism. For a very long time, it was understood that terrorism in South Asia is essentially a problem between India and Pakistan. But post September 11th, 2001, it became very clear to the world that all the terrorist attacks that have taken place have some linkage with Pakistan. It harbours a huge number of terrorist organisations...' Chinoy said.
He further underscored India's consistent position, stating, '...For a very long time, it was understood that terrorism in South Asia is a matter between India and Pakistan. But post September 11, 2001, it became clear to the world that all the terrorist attacks that have taken place have some linkage with Pakistan. India has always been talking about it...'
Chinoy's remarks came during his address in Monrovia, Liberia, as part of ongoing diplomatic outreach focused on security cooperation and counter-terrorism.
Alongside him, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader SS Ahluwalia emphasised that terrorism is a global concern, not just India's problem.
'It is not a matter of concern for India only. Our visionary PM, Narendra Modi, visualises that in isolation, one nation cannot fight or finish this monster. Today, if it is eliminated in India, then tomorrow, it will appear in another country, because their (Pakistan's) economy runs on this, and they extract money out of it. Today, if you find any terrorist activity in the world, its investigation will lead to Pakistan,' Ahluwalia said.
BJP MP Atul Garg addressed Pakistan's internal political instability, stating, 'Every PM of Pakistan is either jailed... Continuously, the GDP of Pakistan is decreasing... Pakistan has nothing to lose.' BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj called for global unity against terrorism, stressing, 'Terrorism is not a problem of any region... At this time, the whole world should stand together against terrorism. The terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 was a murder of humanity.'
The delegation, led by Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde, includes BJP MPs Bansuri Swaraj, Atul Garg, Manan Kumar Mishra, Indian Union Muslim League's ET Mohammed Basheer, Biju Janata Dal's Sasmit Patra, BJP leader SS Ahluwalia, and former Ambassador Sujan Chinoy. This group aims to brief international partners on India's response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and its broader fight against cross-border terrorism while engaging with leaders in key countries.
This multi-party delegation, consisting of seven groups led by one MP each, has been initiated to counter global misinformation and highlight India's zero-tolerance policy on terrorism. (ANI)

Kurian Joseph Committee on Centre
The decision of the Tamil Nadu government to establish a panel on Centre – State relations in April this year consisting of the retired Supreme Court judge justice Kurien Joseph as chairperson along with the retired IAS officer Ashok Vardhan Shetty and former State Planning Commission chairman M Naganathan as members is a significant move to revive and reinvigorate the debate on the Centre – State relations in the country. This high-level committee constituted by the Government of Tamil Nadu is likely to submit its interim report by January 2026, and the final report within two years. The composition of its members, stated objectives and the background to the establishment of this committee are no less significant. The forming of Kurian Joseph committee acquires relevance in context of the changing political, economic and ideological realities in the country given the shift from the era of Congress dominance in Indian politics to the rise of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Hindutva politics and the role of corporate capital in Indian economy. The mandate of the committee is to review the constitutional provisions, laws, rules and policies with respect to Centre – State relations with an aim of exploring and recommending ways to restore subjects moved from the State List to the Concurrent List. This committee is expected to suggest reforms to ensure maximum autonomy for states without compromising the unity and integrity of the nation besides overcoming the administrative hurdles in the smooth functioning of the Centre – State relations. The core objective of this panel is to study the state of Centre – State relations with a view to safeguard the rights of the states and improve the relations between the Centre and states. The underlying political function of this committee is to defend and thwart the attempts of the centre to overrun and further undermine the powers of the states reflecting the current tension and uneasiness prevailing over this subject between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government at the centre and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government in Tamil Nadu. The formation of this committee and its core objectives resemble the circumstances and challenges, though different from another era and extent, surrounding the establishment of the Rajamannar Committee in 1969 by the Tamil Nadu government led by Karunanidhi. The Rajamannar Committee was the first state-level initiative to study and review Centre – State relations. There are other comparable initiatives by the Centre including the Administrative Reforms Commission (1969), Sarkaria Commission (1983) and the Punchhi Commission in 2007. The formation of this committeeagainst the background of the deep erosion of legislative, executive and financial powers by the states and their resistance, including the call of the chief minister of Tamil Nadu MK Stalin for state autonomy cannot be missed. This initiative is seen as a response of the DMK-led government in Tamil Nadu to the BJP's attempts at centralisation of power at the Centre. There is an appeal to consider and expedite the process of implementation of the recommendations of the Rajamannar Committee, Sarkaria Commission and the Punchhi Commission. The major concerns of the state are such as the implementation of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for medical admissions, the National Education Policy-2020 (NEP) and its insistence on three-language formula, the working of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the partisan role and interventions of the Governor in state politics and the potential impact of the delimitation process if implemented with an exclusive population criteria alone. There is a sense of being penalised for its success in addressing the above issues keeping what is best for the state and its people. The longstanding dispute over the non-payment of GST dues for the state; the recent flare-up over the withholding of funds meant for Tamil Nadu's education programmes and the routine clashes between the Governor and the government of Tamil Nadu are critical pointers to this effect. The idea of participatory governance and cooperative federalism are indeed becoming distant dreams given the extent of erosion of the rights of the states and the inherent bias towards the centre in the actual working of our federalism. Though it is not easy to overlook the issues and challenges in the Centre – State relations in India and the brewing conflict(s) on a range of issues over this subject between the DMK and BJP, yet it is important to acknowledge that the establishment of Kurian Joseph Committee is part of a long standing and consistent position of the state to determine the policies for the welfare and wellbeing of the people. The decision of the Tamil Nadu chief minister to move a resolution for more autonomy and the forming of this high-level Kurian Joseph Committee are reflective of the determination of the DMK party and government to revive and restore the debate on Centre – State relations under the present circumstances of prevailing conflicts and distrust between the state and the Centre. There is no doubt that this debate is necessary which, however, requires a more cautious and balanced assessment of the rights and powers of the states against the fears of parochial regionalism and , as a matter of reality, the growing drift towards majoritarianism, excessive centralisation and the exploitation of frenzy nationalism at the centre. Neither augurs well for the unity and integrity of India. "US Has Understood That India...": Shashi Tharoor On Ties With Pakistan
New Delhi: The US has clearly understood India's position that there can be no dialogue with Pakistan with a "gun pointed at our head", Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has said. Mr Tharoor, who is leading an all-party delegation to the US to brief key stakeholders on Operation Sindoor, also dismissed Washington's claims that its trade diplomacy played a major role in averting a conflict between India and Pakistan. He was speaking at an interaction session at the National Press Club in the US on Wednesday when he made the remarks. "I think the US has understood for some time now that India has a very clear position that there will be no talks with a gun pointed at our head. It's not that we can't talk to Pakistan. "If Pakistan hits us, we will head back because we have a right of self-defence. If Pakistan stops, we will stop. So we didn't need persuading to stop. And that message was given regularly to everybody else who called," he said, referring to the ceasefire on May 10, after four days of military engagement between the two sides. "I knew that some of this was actually out on the Twitter timeline of our foreign minister. So, it was an open thing that we're talking to people and letting them know we're ready to call this off any time the others do. And the others were the ones who were prolonging it. Both NCP factions to mark 26th anniversary in Pune
MUMBAI: When the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) turns 26 on June 10, its two rival factions will mark the occasion with two contrasting events – one a show of strength, the other a low-key celebration. Both parties – the NCP led by Ajit Pawar and the NCP (SP) led by his uncle, Sharad Pawar – have chosen Pune as the venue. Most importantly, leaders as well as the rank and file from both factions are hoping to get clarity on whether the two parties will merge, a subject that has fuelled much speculation lately. Ajit Pawar has booked a part of the Balewadi sports complex, where seating arrangements will be made for 15,000 office-bearers. 'It should be seen as a show of strength of the party against the backdrop of the local body elections scheduled in the next few months,' said a senior NCP leader. He said they were expecting 15,000 to 20,000 delegates from across the state. 'The celebrations will start in the morning and conclude with Ajit Pawar's speech,' he said. 'Pune is a central place for people coming from Western Maharashtra, the Konkan, Marathwada and North Maharashtra. Only those coming from Vidarbha will find it inconvenient.' The two NCPs have been at daggers drawn ever since Ajit Pawar walked out of the undivided NCP with 40 MLAs in July 2023, to join the BJP-led Mahayuti government in the state. He was rewarded with the post of deputy chief minister. During the local body elections, the two factions will fight a pitched battle for control over Western Maharashtra, a stronghold of the NCP for decades. In the state assembly elections, Ajit Pawar emerged as the stronger of the two Pawars in the region. For the anniversary celebrations, Sharad Pawar has booked Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir, an auditorium with a capacity of around 1,000. 'Pawar saheb will guide all of us by addressing the gathering,' said Ankush Kakade, spokesperson of the NCP (SP). NCP (SP) leaders said they are anxious to get clarity on whether the two NCP factions will reconcile their differences and reunite. 'The speculation has created confusion among the cadre. We all are hoping the party leadership will clear the air on the anniversary, and guide us on how to plan our poll strategy,' said a senior party functionary. Last year, on the undivided NCP's silver jubilee, the Ajit Pawar-led faction celebrated the occasion at Shanmukhananda Hall in Mumbai, while the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) celebrated it in Ahmednagar.
