First Bugatti Mistral Deliveries Mark The Beginning Of The End For The W16 Engine

Before Bugatti starts production of the totally new V16-powered Tourbillon hypercar, it has to finish out production of its models powered by the brand's iconic quad-turbo W16, without a doubt the greatest engine that has ever existed. The final Chiron was shown last year and deliveries of the track-only Bolide are well underway, and now Bugatti is finally commencing deliveries of the roofless W16 Mistral, the last road-going model to use that incredible engine.
The W16 Mistral was first unveiled at Monterey Car Week in 2022, and the design has gone essentially unchanged since then as the car went through its extensive testing regimen. When it was still under Volkswagen ownership Bugatti said it was done chasing speed records after building the first road car to hit 300 mph, but now that Mate Rimac is at the helm that's changed — back in November a Mistral hit 282 mph, making it the fastest droptop car ever made.
Only 99 units of the Mistral will be made at a starting price of around $5 million each, and these first two Mistrals are both headed to customers in the United States. They're almost polar opposites in terms of spec (maybe Bugatti did that on purpose) and both have some very cool touches, so let's dive in.

While certainly striking, the first of the two Mistrals is definitely the tamer one. Its body is finished in exposed Black Carbon with a Bugatti Light Blue Sport stripe that starts just behind the cabin, covering the rear deck and roll bar. That bright blue is also found on the hood vent trim, brake calipers, side mirrors, engine covers and other accents. Bugatti's signature center spine nicely bisects that deck stripe. Bugatti says that many "discerning" owners go for dual-color schemes, but this one's black finish "exudes immense power and captivating refinement."
The interior is a lot more exciting, as nearly every single surface is finished in Bugatti Light Blue Sport leather, paired with Beluga Black stitching and black carbon-fiber accents. Bugatti developed a new woven leather technique for the Mistral that's found on the seats and door panels, which looks utterly spectacular especially on the curved door cards. Milled from a single block of aluminum and placed into a glass enclosure in every Mistral's shifter is the Dancing Elephant sculpture that Rembrandt Bugatti was so well known for, having been used as the hood ornament on the Royale. In this black Mistral the glass is transparent and the shifter is finished in Bugatti Light Blue leather, and the elephant is also stitched into the headrests.
This second Mistral is much more up my alley. Its matte White Glacier paint is offset by Blue Carbon for all the lower exterior bits, like the splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser. The wheels are painted blue to match the carbon, which is a nice touch. There are a number of Italian Red accents in places like the center spine and the script under the active wing, which along with some Atlantic Blue bits celebrated "the Star-Spangled Banner and the French brand's roots," according to Bugatti — it even has a red-white-and-blue flag just aft of each front wheel.
On the inside, the white car has tons of white leather with Lake Blue stitching and blue carbon throughout, plus red accents for the seatbelts, center dashboard spine and Dancing Elephant headrests. Its shifter is also even cooler than the black car's: the shifter itself is made of hand-crafted wood, and the elephant is encased in Italian Red glass.
The Mistral was named after one of the eight principal winds of the Mediterranean, specifically the one that blows from souther France out to the Côte d'Azur along the coast. Bugatti certainly chose the name wisely, as it ties nicely into the brand's flowery language about the W16 era coming to a close:

Yes, the seventh-generation Mustang still flies the performance flag, but it's hardly a volume play. EU taxes punish engines bigger than two liters, dogging the 5.0-liter V-8, while the smaller 2.3-liter EcoBoost was pulled from European order books at the end of 2020. The pony car, therefore, lives on as a niche halo, not a substitute for the daily-drivable, budget-friendly thrills once delivered by ST-badged Fiestas and Focuses. Whether Ford ever revisits the hot-hatch formula likely depends on batteries, not boost pressure. Former Ford of Europe boss-now VW sales chief-Martin Sanders has hinted that the Blue Oval could tap further into Volkswagen's MEB electric platform, the foundation for the forthcoming Explorer and Capri EVs. VW has already promised an electric GTI; a battery-fueled Fiesta ST or Focus ST revival isn't unthinkable if the economics line up. For now, though, enthusiasts must look to the used market or pivot to rival brands still flying the internal-combustion hot-hatch flag. The Fiesta Supersport of 1980 lit the fuse; the Escort RS, Fiesta XR2, and decades of ST variants kept the fire roaring. With the Focus ST's curtain call, the combustion-powered Ford hot hatch becomes history. What replaces it, if anything, will almost certainly hum rather than howl. The production plans were revealed following the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between FAW-Volkswagen and the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA) government. A Houston motorist says he spent $52 at the pump before realizing something was seriously wrong with the fuel. What came out wasn't gas, and it could cause major damage. In a TikTok video viewed more than 1.4 million times, creator Kam Jackson (@kamiibltzjackson) shows us what happened recently when he filled up his Volkswagen at a 76 gas station (part of Phillips 66) in south central Houston. The view of the filled tank shows a milky white liquid inside, rather than the clearer composition of virtually every blend of gasoline. And rather than giving off the distinctive smell of fuel, Jackson notes the white stuff 'doesn't even smell like gas.' While the liquid caught on video looks more like watered-down milk than anything you'd expect to find at a gas pump, research suggests it's likely a case of contaminated fuel, which can spell serious trouble for modern engines. Why Is the Gasoline Milky and Cloudy? The most common explanation for milky, cloudy fuel is water contamination , which can happen when rainwater or condensation enters a station's underground storage tanks. Once mixed with gasoline, especially ethanol blends, the water forms a hazy or white appearance that's easily mistaken for something more benign. In large enough quantities, this mix can reach the pump and flow directly into a customer's tank. According to Bell Performance, contaminated gas can lead to rough idling, misfires, and sensor errors. A CBS News report on similar incidents confirms the risk of engine stalls and long-term fuel system damage. Water isn't the only possibility. Another explanation is a DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) mix-up, either during delivery or at the pump itself. DEF is made of deionized water and urea. It's usually clear or cloudy, odorless, and completely non-combustible. It's not a fuel, and even a small amount introduced into a gasoline tank can corrode fuel pumps and injectors. If the engine is started, the result may be catastrophic. Diesel World warns that DEF contamination can lead to total fuel system failure, and in at least one real-world case shared on Reddit , a driver faced thousands in repair bills after unknowingly pumping DEF into their vehicle. A third possibility is diesel fuel contamination, usually due to a delivery or equipment error that sends diesel through the wrong dispenser. Diesel has a thicker, oilier texture than gasoline and can appear slightly cloudy or discolored. It's also completely incompatible with gasoline engines. Lastly, drivers should know about ethanol phase separation , a lesser-known issue that can cause similar white or cloudy fuel. Gasoline blended with ethanol can absorb moisture from the air. When saturation levels get too high, the ethanol separates and forms a dense layer of ethanol and water at the bottom of the tank. If that layer is pulled into the pump, drivers may end up with a liquid that looks nothing like gasoline and performs even worse. This is especially common in humid climates or at stations with poorly maintained tanks, as outlined by Bell Performance and Parent Petroleum, which advise regular monitoring and maintenance to prevent such incidents. What Can Happen to My Car If I Fill Up With Contaminated Fuel? Contaminated fuel can lead to serious and costly damage, particularly in today's tightly engineered fuel systems. Whether it's water, DEF, or another foreign substance, the consequences of a bad fill-up can include corroded fuel pumps, injector failure, engine misfires, and even damage to catalytic converters and oxygen sensors. According to RepairPal , a basic fuel system flush might cost $200 to $400, but if contamination reaches key components, repairs can easily escalate to $2,500 or more. And if DEF is involved, which is highly corrosive and not combustible, the damage can be catastrophic. Diesel World notes that DEF in a gas tank often requires a full fuel system replacement. In a commentary posted on the clip, Jackson notes that station personnel were uncooperative and dismissive of his concerns about the suspect fuel. Not surprisingly, the car stalled shortly after leaving the station. 'Not only am I unable to get to work due to my stalled car, but I also now face repair costs,' he wrote. Comments on the video have been turned off and removed, but a Google index page of his content shows it once had more than 2,700 responses. In another recent video unrelated to the service station frustration, commenters were asking for an update on the situation, with Jackson offering little response other than some appreciation for the interest. Motor1 reached out to Jackson via a comment on the follow-up clip and attempted unsuccessfully to reach the station via a phone number that had been disabled. Via email, parent company Phillips 66 wrote in part, 'All our stations are independently owned and operated. For more assistance, you will need to contact the station you are inquiring about.'
