NDTV19-07-2025
After a four-year gap, Mumbai's beloved mini train, fondly known as "Van Rani" (Queen of the Jungle), is all set to return to the tracks of Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), rekindling nostalgia for generations of Mumbaikars and nature enthusiasts.
Sprawling across 106.95 sq km in the heart of Mumbai, SGNP is reviving this iconic Mini Toy Train, which was discontinued after Cyclone Tauktae caused severe damage in 2021. Originally launched in 1974, the train has been a cherished attraction for over 50 years, delighting children, families, and tourists alike.
Now, under a major redevelopment initiative, the Van Rani is being brought back, refreshed, revitalised, and ready to roll. The effort is being led by Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, and Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, with critical support from the Ministry of Railways.
What's New with Van Rani?
Track Overhaul
The entire 2.3 km route has been relaid, and all 15 bridges along the track have been reconstructed, ensuring a safe and smooth ride for visitors.
Modern Coaches
A brand-new toy train unit has been added to the SGNP fleet. Trial runs began on June 30, and a successful full-capacity test was conducted on July 5, showcasing the readiness of the system.
Upgraded Stations
Krishnagiri Station has completed work on its building, platform, and accessibility ramps. Final touches are underway.
Teenmurthy Station has a completed platform, and its station shed is expected to be ready by July 25.
New Attractions
The new Van Rani will offer more than just a ride. Passengers can enjoy educational panels on wildlife, panoramic views of the Deer Park, and an immersive journey through SGNP's rich biodiversity, adding a fresh dimension to the experience.
Expected Completion: End of July 2025
The relaunch of Van Rani not only revives a treasured piece of Mumbai's cultural heritage but also aims to boost eco-tourism and inspire younger generations to connect with nature. With its official reopening just weeks away, the Forest Department is gearing up to welcome visitors, young and old, to relive memories and make new ones aboard the beloved jungle queen.

Rains lead to closure of tourist spots in Nilgiris; Avalanche dam sluice gates opened

Despite rains easing off across the Nilgiris, many tourist spots operated by the Forest Department, including Doddabetta Peak, Pine Forest and the Eighth Mile Tree Park were closed to the public for the fourth consecutive day on Sunday (July 27, 2025). The Avalanche dam had also almost reached almost full-capacity, leading officials from TANGEDCO to decide on releasing water through the dam's sluice gates. The Forest Department announced the tourist spots were closed owing to concerns over public safety due to heavy winds. The Nilgiris district administration stated an average of 50.46 mm of rain were recorded across the district between Saturday evening and Sunday morning (July 26 and 27, 2025), with intense rains in Naduvattam, Parsons Valley, Porthimund, Avalanche, Upper Bhavani and moderate to heavy rain in parts of Gudalur and Pandalur. Nilgiris Collector helps unearth hidden milestone in Nilgiris' history The heavy rains had led to trees becoming uprooted along the Udhagamandalam to Gudalur Road, while boulders had also become dislodged and blocked the route to Melkowhatty. The National and State Highways Departments both mobilised men to immediately clear the blockages to traffic and traffic flow was restored soon afterwards. Power outages were also reported across many places in Udhagamandalam, Gudalur and Manjoor towns owing to the rains accompanied by heavy winds. Nilgiris district a hotspot for negative human-gaur interactions in Tamil Nadu: study On Sunday (July 27, 2025), the Nilgiris district administration urged residents in Emerald, Nehru Nagar and other areas downstream of the Avalanche dam to not venture close to rivers and streams fed by the dam waters. The sluice gates of the dam were opened on Sunday morning at around 9.30 a.m. Last weekend, the Pykara Dam had also reached full capacity and its sluice gates were opened. The TANGEDCO officials stated that they continued to monitor the capacities of other dams in the district, including Upper Bhavani to ensure the dam's safety.

Indian Railways: How many passengers travelled by train in last six years?

Indian Railways passengers data: Indian Railways (IR) remains one of the most preferred modes of transportation in the country. Over the past decade, the Ministry of Railways has undertaken several initiatives to enhance connectivity including – the launch of modern trains like Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat, doubling of railway lines, construction of new tracks, and the redevelopment of stations, among others. Earlier this week, Congress MP Imran Masood raised a question to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw regarding the number of passengers who have travelled by train since 2019. In response, Vaishnaw stated that train occupancy is not uniform throughout the year. He explained that passenger numbers fluctuate depending on lean and peak travel periods. 'On Indian Railways, the occupancy pattern of trains is not uniform throughout the year, and it varies over lean and peak periods. During peak rush periods, the occupancy of the trains, especially on popular routes, remains full whereas during lean periods and on less popular routes, there is sub optimal utilization,' Vaishnaw added. A total of 3349 crore passengers travelled in Indian Railways (IR) during last six years (i.e. 2019-20 to 2024-25) which included 418 crore reserved and 2,931 crore unreserved class passengers (2020-21 and 2021-22 were COVID years). Elaborating further, Vaishnaw said, 'To cater to the rush during Durga Pooja/Deepawali/Chhath, 7,990 trips of Special trains were operated during the period 1st October,2024 to 30th November, 2024, to serve approximately 1.8 crore passengers. With a view to facilitate the passengers during the recently concluded Maha Kumbh, IR operated more than 17,300 trains during the period 13th January, 2025 to 28th February, 2025, which served approximately 4.24 crore passengers.' The national transporter also increased the facilities for passengers demanding general class travel. A look at how many passengers travelled by general coaches in the last five financial years.
