The Patriots entered training camp this summer with a very crowded receiver room. With two preseason games now in the books, some things are starting to shake out.
Perhaps the most surprising development in that department can be found in the rise of undrafted rookie Efton Chism.
The receiver signed with the Patriots in May to little fanfare after a five-year collegiate career at Eastern Washington. The 23-year-old consistently impressed coaches and media on the practice field, and when given the opportunity to play in preseason games, he's been even better.

That performance came after Chism caught six passes for 50 yards and a touchdown in his preseason debut the previous week against the Commanders.
All told, Chism has caught 12 passes for 121 yards and two touchdowns. And while Stefon Diggs, DeMario Douglas and Kayshon Boutte appear to have roster spots locked in, it's become quite difficult to imagine how the Patriots could cut Chism at the end of this summer.
At the very least, head coach Mike Vrabel won't be holding Chism's lack of draft status against him when making such a decision.
"Doesn't matter how you get here," Vrabel told reporters after the preseason win in Minnesota. "Only thing that matters is what you do when you're here."
While it's certainly premature for anybody to suggest the Patriots might have gotten Cooper Kupp 2.0 out of Eastern Washington, Chism has nevertheless looked like a solid find at a position of need for the Patriots.

49ers trade for Chiefs receiver Skyy Moore, AP source says
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers agreed to a deal to acquire receiver Skyy Moore from the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday. A person familiar with the trade said the teams will swap sixth- and seventh-round picks in 2027 in the deal that sends Moore to San Francisco. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade can't be finalized until Moore passes a physical. The 49ers have gone 227 consecutive regular-season games without a punt return touchdown for the second longest active drought in the NFL. The Niners were in dire need of healthy receivers. Brandon Aiyuk is working his way back from major knee surgery and isn't expected to be able to play until at least Week 6, while fellow starter Jauan Jennings has been out for most of training camp with a calf injury. Coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday on his radio show that Demarcus Robinson is facing a three-game suspension, pending appeal, after pleading no contest last month to a misdemeanor DUI charge. Rookie Jordan Watkins is out with a high ankle sprain and second-year pro Jacob Cowing is nursing a hamstring injury. FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Micah Parsons made his usual sideline appearance for the final practice of training camp for the Dallas Cowboys, who are back in Texas after nearly a month in California. While there were no signs Wednesday that the star pass rusher's hold-in was leading to progress in stalled contract negotiations, first-year coach Brian Schottenheimer didn't hesitate when asked if Parsons would be on the field for the opener at Philadelphia on Sept. 4. With or without a contract extension. 'I feel good that Micah's going to be out there against the Philadelphia Eagles,' Schottenheimer said before the workout inside the 12,000-seat stadium at the team's headquarters in Frisco, north of Dallas. Parsons has cited a back injury as the reason he hasn't participated in practice since the Cowboys reported to California last month. There's little question what the real reason is behind him sitting on a chair on the sidelines rather than going through drills with teammates. Schottenheimer dodged a question on whether there was a deadline for Parsons to have enough real practice time to be ready for the regular season. Most of the starters, including quarterback Dak Prescott, won't play in the preseason, which wraps up Friday night at home against Atlanta. But Parsons' idle time will be an issue if nothing changes in the next week. 'You'd like it sooner rather than later, but Micah's going to be prepared,' Schottenheimer said. 'Micah knows his body as well as anybody. The best thing of him being here is that he has been able to do some of the walkthroughs. He has been able to be in the meetings. The physical side of it, usually the players are the experts with where their bodies are.' Parsons is entering the final season of his five-year rookie contract. The 2021 first-round draft pick is set to make $24 million, but is seeking a new deal with an average annual value in excess of $40 million. Parsons has a pretty good case to be the highest-paid defensive player, even if that designation doesn't last long. The 26-year-old is one of just two players to have at least 12 sacks in his first four seasons since sacks became an official stat in 1982. Pro Football Hall of Famer Reggie White is the other. While the Cowboys were in California, Parsons made a trade request on social media, saying he felt misled in discussions with owner Jerry Jones and suggesting he didn't want to play another game with Dallas. He has spoken to reporters just once since the start of camp. Barring a trade, Parsons' options are limited. Even after his contract expires, Parsons is subject to the franchise tag in 2026 and 2027. Jones has said he has no intention of trading Parsons, and has expressed confidence that a deal will get done. Schottenheimer said he hasn't been frustrated by the constant questions. 'I think my tone hasn't changed. My answer hasn't really changed,' Schottenheimer said. 'I'm focused on the field. I'm focused on the guys that are working. USC is still trying to get itself together heading into Lincoln Riley's 4th season in charge
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lincoln Riley always speaks glowingly of the future at Southern California, with extraordinary recruiting classes and a lavish training complex on the way to lift the Trojans back to their customary perch atop college football. Sure, the future could be great. But Trojans fans really wish Riley had done something to make the present more attractive after two mediocre seasons under their high-priced coach. USC is not ranked in the preseason AP Top 25 for the first time since 2019, reflecting the college football world's skepticism about the state of Riley's project in its fourth year. It's still unclear whether Riley and defensive coordinator D'Anton Lynn can translate USC's vaunted brand, bountiful resources and roster talent into wins. 'Seeing how our roster has evolved on all sides, especially defensively after the huge improvements that we made a year ago, the depth, the championship-caliber depth that started to be established across the board is something that we all have worked hard for,' Riley said. 'It's been a long journey to work towards that point, but it's pretty exciting to watch unfold right now.' Trojans fans wish Riley would do his unfolding a bit faster. Riley's first USC team won 11 of its first 12 games with Caleb Williams working wonders, but the high-priced coach is 15-13 since then. USC went 7-6 in its Big Ten debut last season, needing a late comeback to steal the Las Vegas Bowl from Texas A&M just to avoid posting the Trojans' third losing record since 2000. Maiava returns Quarterback Jayden Maiava is back after starting the final four games of last season. The UNLV transfer isn't on many lists as a star in the making, but he has the firm backing of Riley, a head coach with a resume including three Heisman-winning quarterbacks and Jalen Hurts, a second-place Heisman finisher who just won a Super Bowl. Waiting in the wings is Husan Longstreet, one of the nation's top prep quarterbacks last fall. Playmakers USC's lack of difference-makers at the offensive skill positions was glaring last season, but receivers Ja'Kobi Lane and Makai Lemon are back after an offseason of building trust with Maiava. Tailback U will have its usual selection of elite rushers, including juco transfer Waymond Jordan. But they're behind an offensive line that didn't look dominant even before projected starting guard DJ Wingfield was denied an eligibility waiver. Big hitter USC's most interesting defensive player is safety Kamari Ramsey, the UCLA transfer who starred last year. Lynn will rely heavily Ramsey's versatile playmaking to control the back of a defense with a much-improved line and question marks at linebacker. Clock is ticking Unless the team on the field profoundly collapses this season, Riley probably isn't in serious jeopardy. USC has indeed landed a stellar recruiting class arriving for 2026, and the lavish Bloom Football Performance Center opens next summer. What's more, the school itself appears to be in dire financial straits with a $200 million operating deficit — not exactly ideal conditions to buy out one of the fattest contracts in college sports. Still, Trojans fans are weary of waiting for Riley to end 15 largely mediocre years of post-Pete Carroll football. 'It's very apparent that USC is extremely serious about making this football program and returning it back to being one of the greats in college football,' Riley said. 'You can see that investment level really all the way across our program. The excitement that comes with that, the anticipation, the opportunity is real, and I think we all feel it.' The schedule After ex-coach Clay Helton brings Georgia Southern to the Coliseum on Sept. 6, things get difficult quickly. The Trojans host Michigan State on Sept. 20 and Michigan on Oct. 11. The annual meeting with Notre Dame follows on Oct. 18 in South Bend. The Trojans return to Oregon on Nov. 22.
