How Heath Ledger Outacted 253 Others to Secure His Iconic "10 Things I Hate About You" Role
's breakout performance as Patrick Verona in the 1999
teen rom-com
"
10 Things I Hate About You
" is now mythic, yet the story behind his securing the role is as delightful as the performance itself.
The Audition That Changed Everything
Director
Gil Junger
recalled that Ledger was a new face at the time, and the casting process had been exhausting: he had already auditioned 253 actors for the role of Patrick Verona.
Disney
's casting chief, Marcia Ross, had brought in Ledger as a favor to a respected agent, recalled Junger, with little hope that he would get it.
But, the moment Ledger entered the room, he owned it completely. Junger remembered:

"He took three steps into the room, and my thought was, 'If this f---er can read English, I'm going to cast him.''
Even before a word was spoken, Ledger's soulfulness led Junger to think that he had found his Patrick Verona. "He just had a magnetism unlike I've ever felt. It was undeniable. He just was so confident and loving and wanted to be the best he could be. He was just an incredible young man,' mentioned Junger.
Live Events
Ledger was only 17, with a rather older and more confident personality. Of Ledger's first day on set, the director spoke about his bohemian attire-Frye boots, torn olive green leather pants, a white leather belt, a wacky shirt, and a beanie-that only made him cooler and more authentic. Junger added, "He just had this magic where you could just put anything on him, maybe even paint it, and he'd be incredibly cool, because the kid you saw in the movie, that's who he was. He was just an incredible human."
A Breakout Role
Ledger's coming into stardom as the mysterious and charming Patrick Verona, hired to woo Julia Stiles' character Kat, was a career-defining role. The film's blend of humor, love story, and pop culture moments- like Ledger's bleacher drama in the high school- earned him a spot as a leading man in romance and set the stage for his future success in "A Knight's Tale," "Brokeback Mountain," and "The Dark Knight," for which he won a posthumous Oscar.
Junger's fondness for Ledger was so immense that he would even go out of his way to ride to location with him, simply to be in his company. Now, as the director works on a spiritual follow-up to "10 Things I Hate About You," he's made it a point to avoid an outright sequel out of respect for Ledger's memory and what worked so beautifully in the original.
Heath Ledger's casting wasn't a matter of reading lines-it was a matter of an instant, electric presence that separated him from a sea of other contenders.

This hairless bulldog won $5,000 for being the 'world's ugliest dog'
A hairless English-French bulldog has earned a prize of $5,000 for being awarded the title of the world's ugliest dog. Petunia, the 2-year-old dog, won the World's Ugliest Dog contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair near San Francisco. Petunia, the two-year-old pup from Oregon, lives with her owner, Shannon Nyman. (X/@w3bsag3) The annual competition judges dogs on a few activities, but mostly focuses on their not-so-cute appearances. The contest raises money to help pet shelters find animals forever homes. According to its website, the contest is five decades old, and many of the contestants "have been rescued from shelters and puppy mills." "Dogs of all breeds and sizes have warmed our hearts and filled our lives with unconditional love. This world-renowned event celebrates the imperfections that make all dogs special and unique." Petunia, the two-year-old pup from Oregon, lives with her owner, Shannon Nyman. According to reports, rescuers first discovered her in a chaotic backyard breeder and hoarding situation in Las Vegas. She was later relocated to Oregon by Luvable Dog Rescue, a nonprofit organisation. 'She's the most wrinkled 2-year-old I've ever seen,' one judge told the TV station. Her charming imperfections earned her the contest crown, a $5,000 prize and a spot on upcoming limited-edition MUG Root Beer cans, courtesy of one of the event sponsors. Following her win, Petunia appeared live on the Today show with Nyman.

GTA 6 won't be Rockstar's only big release; here's what else could be coming
(Image via Rockstar) We've been living off GTA 6 hype crumbs for months with trailers, leaks, and release date shifts, but here's the plot twist: Rockstar isn't putting all its eggs in the Vice City basket. Yes, GTA 6 is the star of the show, but the studio's also busy whipping up some other secret dishes. And no, they're not telling us the recipes yet. Rockstar Games is Working on Other Projects Apart from GTA 6 Straight from the mouth of Take-Two Interactive's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, in a recent CNBC chat, Rockstar has 'a lot of other things going on.' Of course, he kept the mystery levels on max, but it's proof that the devs aren't just crunching pixels for GTA 6. Sure, GTA 6 is the 'primary focus,' but history tells us Rockstar is a multitasking beast. Remember how they juggled GTA Online updates while dropping Red Dead Redemption 2? This studio doesn't sleep. Which Other Games Could Be Cooking? Rockstar has a vault of beloved IPs, and fans haven't been shy about asking for their return. Here are the frontrunners for what those 'other things' could be: Bully 2 or a Remake – Fans have been screaming for it since the mid-2000s. Rumors have flared up and died down more times than we can count, but hey… never say never. Red Dead Redemption 2 Next-Gen Upgrade – Sure, it runs on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, but not natively. Imagine an RDR2 with ray tracing, faster load times, and even prettier sunsets. Totally New IP – Rockstar could shock-drop a new franchise. Unlikely? Maybe. But so was GTA Online printing billions. Rockstar Games Is Working On A New Game... (It's Not GTA 6) Don't Expect Reveals Anytime Soon Rockstar originally aimed for Fall 2025, but earlier this year, it pushed the date to May 26, 2026. They're perfectionists, and if they think it needs more time to meet their own god-tier standards, they'll take it. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sarah Ferguson breaks her silence about Prince Andrew Cleverst Undo Still, Zelnick says he's 'highly confident' in that date, so fingers crossed it sticks. Why This Is Big News If Rockstar is developing multiple games alongside GTA 6, that means the post-2026 drought might not be as long as the gap between GTA 5 and GTA 6 (a whole twelve years). We could see a steady flow of content instead of waiting another decade for something fresh. GTA 6 might be the headliner, but Rockstar's backstage is busier than we thought. Whether it's a long-awaited sequel, a next-gen glow-up, or a brand-new surprise, the future looks stacked. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
