Road closures in Miri city this July 22 for Sarawak Day Unity Walk parade
MIRI (July 17): Several roads in the city centre here will be temporarily closed this July 22 to make way for the Unity Walk parade, held in celebration of Sarawak Day.
Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the Unity Walk will commence from the Miri Indoor Stadium.
'Closures will begin at 7am and are expected to last until 9am, affecting roads along the parade route,' he said in a statement today.
The roads include Jalan Sukan, Jalan Kipas, Jalan Sylvia, Jalan Parry, Jalan North Yu Seng, and Jalan Merpati.
Mohd Farhan advised motorists to cooperate with police personnel on duty and to follow all instructions given during the temporary closure.
'The public is also encouraged to plan their journeys in advance to avoid delays,' he added.

MIRI (Aug 8): Police foiled an attempt to smuggle in drugs with the arrest of a local man at the Miri Airport arrival hall on Aug 4. Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the 32-year-old suspect, believed to be a drug mule, was found carrying 6.4kg of methamphetamine and 66.7g of cannabis in his backpack upon arrival at 10.40pm. 'The drugs, believed to be meant for distribution in Miri and the surrounding areas, have a street value of RM238,801. 'Investigations revealed he received the drugs from a syndicate in the peninsula and was paid RM8,000,' he told a press conference today. Mohd Farhan said the suspect was also tested positive for methamphetamine, and has been remanded until Aug 12 for further investigation. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, and if not sentenced to death, a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane. Pedestrian in Miri dies on way home in suspected hit-and-run

MIRI (Aug 7): A 33-year-old man was killed in a suspected hit-and-run while walking along Jalan Dato Sri Balan Seling here in the wee hours of today. Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the incident happened around 2am when the victim and a co-worker were headed back to Krokop on foot after a round of drinks in the Permyjaya area. 'Initial investigations found that the co-worker had walked ahead of the victim, and only realised that the victim was nowhere to be seen when he reached the traffic light junction near a petrol station. 'He then doubled back and found the victim dead by the roadside,' said Mohd Farhan in a statement. He added the body was sent to Miri Hospital for a post-mortem, with police currently working on identifying the vehicle involved in the incident. The case, he said, is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. Op Pelbagai: 330 summonses issued for non-standard licence plates, other traffic offences

Miri police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the operation, dubbed Op Pelbagai, saw 509 vehicles and 571 individuals checked from July 28 to Aug 3. The operation was conducted by the district Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division, involving a senior officer and 13 personnel. 'This operation specifically focused on fancy licence plates as well as licence plates that do not comply with regulations under the law. 'Off the 330 summonses issued, 48 were for fancy licence plates, 47 for non-regulation licence plates, and 235 for other offences,' he said in a statement today. He said the use of fancy licence plates on vehicles is an offence under Section 14(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which carries a fine of between RM300 and RM3,000. At the same time, Mohd Farhan reminded all road users to ensure their vehicles have valid road tax and insurance, as well as regulation licence plates, and to always comply with traffic laws. 'Continuous monitoring and enforcement will be carried out to ensure road safety and curb irresponsible behaviour on the road,' he added.
