RTC staff threaten stir over privatisation of Vijayawada depot lands
In a press release issued here, the EU announced that the state government, on Sunday, approved the handover of approximately 4.15 acres of prime land to the Lulu Group for the construction of a shopping mall. This allocated land reportedly includes not only the Governorpet 1 & 2 depots but also the Old Bus Stand and even a municipal park developed during the previous TDP regime.
The union alleges that this valuable public land, estimated to be worth hundreds of crores of rupees, has been earmarked for the Lulu Mall, a move they argue will displace essential public transport infrastructure and adversely affect thousands of daily commuters.
'This decision is not in the public interest. It moves RTC depots away from the city's center and hands over valuable public land to private entities,' stated Palisetti Damodara Rao, State president of the APPTD Employees Union.
In response to the government's decision, the union has announced a teleconference with its state-level leadership for July 29.
Following this, a detailed agitation plan will be declared on July 30, according to Damodara Rao. The union has demanded the immediate withdrawal of G.O. Ms. No. 137 and has vowed to escalate protests if the government proceeds with the proposed land transfer.
'We are not against development, but not at the cost of public transport and public assets,' added GV Narasaiah, State General Secretary of the Employees Union. 'We urge the government to reconsider its decision and protect the RTC properties that serve lakhs of RTC passengers.'

The Karnataka High Court on Monday directed unions of the state road transport corporations to put on hold a proposed indefinite strike from August 5 during the pendency of negotiations for the payment of 38 months' arrears in wage hikes. 'If the entire public transport operation is stalled, the public are likely to be put to hardship. Therefore, it would be appropriate to grant interim stay till tomorrow awaiting the outcome of negotiations with the Government referred to above. Hence respondent No.7 is hereby directed to put on hold their proposed strike till next hearing date,' a division bench said in an interim order while posting the matter for hearing on Tuesday. The court was informed that the unions issued a notice for an indefinite strike on July 15 and that 'conciliation meetings were held on 28.07.2025 and 02.08.2025 and that process is still on'. 'It is also submitted that today the meeting of respondent No.7 (Joint Action Committee) and the Chief Minister are also going on,' the court noted. The court issued the order after a Bengaluru resident, Sunil J, filed a petition opposing the strike on the grounds of widespread inconvenience to the public. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, meanwhile, held a meeting with the Joint Action Committee of the unions on Monday and assured them that no injustice would be done. 'A few rounds of meetings have already been held with representatives of various organizations of the transport corporation. It is possible to resolve the issues through mutual talks. CPI backs protest against transfer of APSRTC land to Lulu group
VIJAYAWADA: Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary K Ramakrishna has called on citizens to unite in opposing the transfer of public lands to private entities, particularly the lease of the APSRTC old bus stand (Governorpet depot) in Vijayawada to the Lulu Group. Speaking at a roundtable meeting held at Dasari Bhavan under the CPI city committee's leadership, Ramakrishna extended CPI's support to the Citizens' Forum protest scheduled for August 6. He criticised the State government's decision to lease 4.15 acres of the Vijayawada bus stand, valued at approximately Rs 400 crore in the open market, and 13.7 acres in Visakhapatnam to the multinational company for 99 years at a nominal rate. Ramakrishna demanded the immediate withdrawal of G.O. No. 137, calling the move exploitative and questioning the government's motives in transferring public assets to private players. Former Mayor Jandhyala Shankar said the lease violated Supreme Court rulings and must be reversed. YSRCP leader Malladi Vishnu, CPM's Donepudi Kashinath, and Congress city president Naraharisetti Narasimharao warned that the move could damage small businesses, increase unemployment, and cause environmental and traffic issues. The meeting concluded with a unanimous resolution demanding a halt to the land transfers and prioritising local business, environmental protection, and public interests over corporate expansion.

APSRTC urged to replace outdated ticketing machines before free bus travel scheme rollout
Vijayawada: AP public transport dept (RTC) employees have urged the govt to replace the outdated unified ticketing system machines ahead of rolling out the free bus travel scheme for women passengers in govt-run buses from Aug 15 in the state. They said the existing ticket issuing machines (TIMS), which are over three years old, are creating manifold problems for conductors while issuing tickets, with issues like inadequate battery backup, hardware/motherboard problems, and touch screen issues. The bus conductors, in many instances, are forced to issue manual tickets to passengers as the substandard paper roll and ink quantity supplied to TIMS machines do not give properly printed tickets. APSRTC has around 14,000 TIMS devices procured from E-Bix, a Chinese firm, for which the govt pays a monthly rent of Rs 680 for each device. "The govt plans to roll out the free bus travel scheme for women across the state from Aug 15. Following the launch of the scheme, APSRTC buses will see more number of passengers, particularly women. "The corporation should tie up with banks and software firms and ask them to donate free TIMS devices and paper rolls with their bank rolls to reduce the burden on the corporation and provide better services to passengers. In Tamil Nadu, govt buses are using TIMS devices provided by a public sector bank free of cost, with quality paper rolls also supplied by the bank, thus reducing the burden on the govt. APSRTC, too, should explore the TN model and replicate it in AP," the employees urged the corporation. They also demanded the installation of charging points on the older RTC buses to charge the TIMS devices.
