Anjelica Huston reveals she is ‘in the clear' after private, years-long cancer battle

Oscar winner Anjelica Huston is singing her own praises, and rightfully so. The 'Addams Family' and 'Witches' acting veteran revealed this week she is a cancer survivor.
'I managed to survive it, and I'm proud of myself,' she told People in an interview published Wednesday.
The 73-year-old 'Prizzi's Honor' star got candid about her private cancer journey, which she said began in 2019. Huston said she was diagnosed with an undisclosed form of cancer after her film 'John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum' premiered in May 2019. 'That was a very serious moment for me,' she recalled to People.
Huston said learning about her diagnosis shocked her and made her conscious about 'what I shouldn't do, of the places I shouldn't go.' Though she did not go into too much detail about her treatment, Huston said her cancer battle discouraged her from taking life too seriously and that she is now 'in the clear.'
Huston also did not disclose much about the treatment she received, but said her condition encouraged her to 'try not to make a big deal out of things.' Six years since her diagnosis, Huston told People she has been cancer-free for years.
'I'm at the four-year mark, and that means so much to me,' she said. 'It's a fantastic thing. I'm very proud of myself, and I've been very lucky.'
Huston, whose prolific film and TV career began in the late '60s, said she has recently enjoyed her time smelling the roses — literally. Upon learning she was cancer-free the 'Grifters' star said she enjoyed a stroll in her garden 'and smelled the roses and thought how clever I was.'
Huston, whose father was the high-profile 'Maltese Falcon' and 'African Queen' director John Huston, said she gets regular scans and has had 'wonderful' doctors helping her out.
Her father directed 'Prizzi's Honor,' the 1985 film that won her the supporting actor Oscar in 1986. He died a year later.
'My dad always used to say the important thing is interest,' Huston told The Times in May 2019. 'I have a number of interests and they're not all about acting.' It's unclear whether she had received her diagnosis by that time.
The 'Addams Family' actor talked about her cancer journey and shrugged off talk of retirement while promoting the BBC miniseries 'Towards Zero,' the latest addition to her acting career. The three-part show is an adaptation of Agatha Christie's 1944 novel of the same name and features Huston as a bed-ridden widow.
The 'Royal Tenenbaums' and 'Lonesome Dove' actor admitted that it can be challenging to speak about her cancer battle 'for the obvious reasons,' but ultimately 'there's a lot to be said for talking about it and getting it out there and celebrating the fact that one's come through.'
'Life is tenuous and wonderful. It also gives you the idea that the world is big and you can somehow match up to it,' she added. 'That you're ready for whatever happens.'
Times staff writer Christie D'Zurilla contributed to this report.

Halle Berry throws shade at ex David Justice's divorce comments in cheeky birthday post

If Halle Berry has learned anything in her nearly six decades, it's how to take criticism in stride. The Oscar-winning actress, whose ex-husband David Justice opened up about their 90s divorce in a recent interview, seemingly responded to her former spouse's remarks in a cheeky Instagram post on Aug. 14, which coincided with her 59th birthday. Berry shared a series of photos from her birthday celebration, which included festive snaps of the actress lounging seaside in a bikini, spending time with boyfriend Van Hunt and enjoying a slice of chocolate cake. "Phew…! cooking, cleaning and mothering," Berry captioned the post. Berry's social media comment appeared to be a callout addressing Justice's remarks from his "All the Smoke" podcast appearance, during which he reflected on the couple's high-profile relationship (Berry and Justice were married from 1993 to 1997.) "She asked me to marry her after knowing me for five months," Justice said on the Aug. 7 episode. "I don't know if my heart was really into it. But I didn't want to make her feel bad and say no. I was just in the moment, it caught me off-guard." Halle Berry's ex David Justice opens up: Baseball veteran reveals stunning reason for ending marriage David Justice reveals reason for Halle Berry divorce Justice added that he didn't face "a lot of negative attention" until he separated from Berry in 1996. Explaining the reasoning for their split, the former Atlanta Braves outfielder said the state of Berry's domestic life was a red flag for him. "I'm looking at my mom. I'm a Midwest guy. So in my mind, I'm thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean," Justice said. "And I'm thinking, 'OK, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with?' And at that time, as a young guy, she don't cook, don't clean, don't really seem, like, motherly." But looking back, Justice said he could have handled his divorce with Berry differently. "I didn't ease out" of the relationship, the baseball veteran reflected, adding that "my knowledge and my understanding and my wisdom around relationships just wasn't vast." "That girl really did love me, and I can see why she would be so mad at me," Justice said. "Because imagine if you really love somebody, and they tell you they want to break up, and there's nothing you can say to get them back. That had to have been tough on her." Berry is in a long-term relationship with Hunt, a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter. Her marriage to Justice was in the 90s. She then married Eric Benét (2001 to 2005) and Olivier Martinez (2013 to 2016). She has two children: Nahla, 17, whose dad is ex-partner Gabriel Aubry, and son Maceo, 11, whom she had with Martinez.

Comedian Paul Rodriguez arrested in Burbank again on suspicion of drug possession

Comedian Paul Rodriguez faces fresh allegations of narcotics possession after being arrested on similar charges less than five months ago in the same city. Burbank police arrested the 70-year-old 'Blood Work' and 'Rat Race' actor around 8:30 p.m. Monday at a parking structure in the city's downtown area, police Sgt. Stephen Turner confirmed to The Times on Thursday. Rodriguez was booked later at Burbank City Jail on suspicion of misdemeanor narcotics possession. He was released early Tuesday morning with a citation and is due in court Sept. 5. A legal representative for Rodriguez did not immediately respond to The Times' request for comment Thursday. Police showed up at the parking structure for a welfare check after a witness voiced concern about a man and woman leaving a restaurant in the area. According to Turner, the witness told police the woman and the man, later identified as Rodriguez, were 'under the influence and not alert.' Officers located people who matched the witness' description in a vehicle in the structure. Rodriguez was in the driver's seat and a woman was in the front passenger seat. 'The investigation led to the discovery of alprazolam [Xanax] and heroin inside of the female's personal bag,' Turner said, adding that the woman was arrested on suspicion of drug possession. Officers also allegedly found Xanax and 'suspected fentanyl' in Rodriguez's vehicle. The actor said the drugs weren't his, Turner said. The details of Rodriguez's arrest Monday echo those from his previous arrest in Burbank in March. The 'A Million Little Things' actor was arrested after police allegedly found narcotics in his vehicle during a traffic stop. Rodriguez disputed law enforcement's recounting of the incident, telling TMZ in March that he was sleeping in the passenger seat when a 'Caucasian' officer on a 'power trip' slapped him to wake him up. Rodriguez told the outlet that the drugs belonged to the person who was driving. At the time, Rodriguez's attorney Bobby Samini called the charges against his client false and said the comic's arrest and treatment by police were a 'violation of his civil rights.' 'He fully cooperated with law enforcement at all times,' Samini said in March. 'Law enforcement asserted that the driver of the vehicle was in possession of a controlled substance. Mr. Rodriguez did not have any controlled substance in his possession, nor was he under the influence of any controlled substance.' Rodriguez, who was born in Mexico and raised in East Los Angeles, began his career at L.A. comedy clubs in the late 1970s and has written and starred in numerous comedy specials. His résumé also includes hosting gigs for Univision and MTV programs and roles in films 'Made in America,' 'Tortilla Soup' and 'The World's Fastest Indian.' Times senior Sacramento reporter Taryn Luna contributed to this article.
