Conclave on National Education Policy begins at NIT-C
Anil D. Sahasrabudhe, Chairman of the National Board of Accreditation and former Chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education, inaugurated the two-day national conclave on 'Implementation of NEP 2020: Moving Towards Academic Excellence' at the Swami Vivekananda Auditorium, West Campus, NIT-Calicut (NIT-C), on Friday.
NIT-C Director Prasad Krishna presided over the event.
Noted academicians, including Ved Prakash, former Chairman of the University Grants Commission; A. Seshadri Sekhar, Director, IIT Palakkad; B. Ravi, Director, NITK Surathkal; and Prem Lal Patel, Director, VNIT Nagpur, took part in the conclave that aims to foster robust collaboration and facilitate knowledge sharing among Centrally funded institutions and State/UT governments to ensure the effective implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 across the nation.
The NIT-C has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Education to mentor six universities in Kerala (University of Calicut, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Innovation and Technology, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Science University (Wayanad), Kerala University of Health and Allied Sciences, and A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technological University).
The universities were represented by 48 delegates alongside participants from other prestigious institutes, including IITs and NITs. More than 225 faculty members from various departments within the NIT-C are also participating in the event.

We'll integrate artificial intelligence in all branches: AICTE Chairperson
All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) chairperson TG Sitharam on Friday said artificial intelligence (AI) will be integrated into all branches of technical education. While AICTE had introduced a BTech programme in AI and Data Science as early as 2017, the Council is now working to include AI in the model curriculums of all technical disciplines, including engineering, information technology, and management studies, Sitharam told PTI. "A committee of experts has been constituted to suggest necessary revisions in the model curriculums. This committee has already held three meetings. I expect the panel to submit its recommendations within the next month on how AI can be incorporated across all branches. Two months after that, we aim to finalise the updated model curriculums," he said. Based on these new model curriculums, AI-inclusive teaching could begin as early as next academic year, the official said. He also informed that AICTE has made around 1,000 textbooks available online in 12 Indian languages, which have been downloaded seven lakh times over the past two years. Currently, 54 technical institutions across the country are offering various courses in these 12 Indian languages, he said. Sitharam was in Indore to attend a meeting of Parliament's advisory committee, chaired by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The meeting focused on promoting education in Indian languages in schools and higher education institutions.

Old careers continue to remain relevant, say experts
At the webinar on 'Emerging Careers 2030: Why Humanities and Sciences Hold the Key', organised jointly by SRM Institute of Science and Technology and The Hindu, experts emphasised that relatively old careers continue to remain relevant. Pro Vice-Chancellor at SRM Institute of Science and Technology Vinay Kumar and Founder and CEO, Inomi Learning, Gurugram, Richa Dwivedi Saklani spoke of the several emerging career opportunities for students studying sciences or humanities. Mr. Kumar said that while AI, green economy and sustainability, logistics and e-commerce, and healthcare and life sciences were emerging fields, as mentioned in the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, existing careers would not change much in the future. He said jobs such as journalism, Human Resources, and corporate communications would remain important. Responding to his observation that India had specific problems such as growing urban development and an ageing society, which required tailored solutions, Ms. Saklani said people who would mull such solutions would require skills in technology, entrepreneurship, and the humanities. Both speakers stressed the importance of acquiring inter-disciplinary skills. Ms. Saklani said that while people in the sciences need to learn how to handle people effectively and identify talent, those in the humanities need to be more open to using technology, new software, and AI. Mr. Kumar emphasised writing persuasively, critical thinking, and empathy as important skills of the present and future. 'When people get trained in multiple disciplines, their thinking changes in a fundamental way,' he said, adding that the National Education Policy stressed on multi-disciplinary education. The speakers also said internships were important in expanding CVs. Mr. Kumar said several companies now request universities to send students to work with them. He said SRM had even reduced course work so that students could take up internships. 'But companies need to work with universities to make these internships meaningful,' he stressed. Ms. Saklani said Inomi encouraged students to get internships as it helped them 'build skills in a live environment with the support of mentors.' PU V-C proposes drone tech centre at campus
In a push towards inter-university collaboration and academic innovation, vice-chancellors from various public universities of Punjab participated in a high-level meeting at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana on Wednesday. Organised as part of a series of interactions initiated by the Punjab Governor, Gulab Chand Kataria, under the group coordinatorship of Panjab University vice chancellor Renu Vig, the meeting focused on enhancing academic cooperation, effective implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and tackling shared challenges in higher education across the state. Vig proposed joint efforts to establish a drone technology centre at PU. She stressed that using the drone tech centre at PU, and the agricultural knowledge base of PAU, GADVASU, a model village can be established for implementation of best technologies in the field of agriculture. She commended the governor's initiative in fostering academic convergence and emphasised PU's commitment to interdisciplinary innovation, highlighting its collaboration with IIT Ropar, which is recognised as a centre of excellence in artificial intelligence for agriculture. Vig also visited the Panjab University Regional Centre, Ludhiana, where she engaged in a session with alumni and leading industrialists of the Ludhiana region to discuss collaborative strategies for academic upliftment and student development. The interactive dialogue featured senior industry leaders including Onkar Singh Pahwa (Avon Cycles), SS Bhogal (Bhogal Sales Corporation) and Komal Jain (Duke Fashions) among others. She also met SP Oswal, chairman, Vardhman Group, to thank him for the ₹1 crore grant to SAIF PU and assured that PU would further the interests of industries in the region.
