Mahathir: Law change needed for Petronas-Petros deal

Published on: Tue, May 20, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Any shift in oil and gas management between Petronas and Petros requires legal amendments approved by both the federal and Sarawak governments said former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. 'And these must be agreed upon by both the federal and state governments,' he said in his podcast. He stressed that Petronas holds exclusive rights under the Petroleum Development Act 1974 and changes can't happen without reform. 'As long as the law is in force, we can't simply allocate or separate part of it to Sarawak,' he said, suggesting Sarawak could be given a bigger role through other means. Mahathir warned that splitting management could harm Petronas's global standing, noting it's the only Malaysian company in the Fortune 500. Brunei Sultan returns from Malaysia
Xinhua 04 Jun 2025, 15:45 GMT+10 BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, June 4 (Xinhua) -- The Sultan of Brunei Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah safely returned to Brunei on Tuesday, according to a local media report. According to the local daily Borneo Bulletin on Tuesday, the Sultan returned to Brunei with his consort, Her Majesty Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha, after meeting Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his wife, Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. According to Brunei's Prime Minister's Office, during the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Meetings in Malaysia last month, the Sultan had been feeling tired and was therefore advised by the host country's medical experts to rest at the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur for several days. Brunei is a Sultanate located in the northern part of Borneo Island, with 346,500 citizens in 2024. The country is a major oil and gas producer in Southeast Asia.

Court to hear Muhyiddin's reference bid on August 28

(Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: The High Court here will hear Muhyiddin Yassin's bid to refer legal questions to the apex court on the validity of certain provisions under the Sedition Act on Aug 28. The former prime minister is accused of making seditious statements during the Nenggiri by-election in Gua Musang, Kelantan, last year. Justice Jamil Hussin fixed the date after lawyer Joshua Tay, appearing for Muhyiddin, told the court that the defence and prosecution had agreed on the date. The court then instructed the prosecution and defence to file their submissions by Aug 14. Deputy public prosecutor Razali Che Ani appeared for the prosecution. Muhyiddin allegedly said he was not invited by the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong to be sworn in as prime minister following the 2022 general election, despite having obtained the majority support of 115 MPs. If found guilty, the Perikatan Nasional chairman and Bersatu president will face a jail term that could extend to three years or a maximum fine of RM5,000. Muhyiddin was initially charged at the Gua Musang sessions court in August last year. Anwar shares royal compliment on Malaysia's medical expertise
PETALING JAYA: Sultan of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah praised the quality and expertise of doctors at the National Heart Institute (IJN) after receiving treatment there. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim conveyed this during the Higher Education Ministry's Ilmuan Malaysia Madani forum titled "Transport for the People: Balancing Affordability, Quality and Sustainability of Public Transport." "His Majesty told me that, as someone with exposure to and experience with some of the world's best medical centres, he was very satisfied with the quality of service, excellence, and expertise of our doctors at IJN," he said. Anwar added that while the government welcomes criticism, Malaysians should also recognise national achievements, especially in healthcare. "So while we allow criticism, which is not a problem, we must also recognise the strengths we have, and there must be the drive to push ourselves to do better," he said. The Sultan of Brunei was in Kuala Lumpur for the 46th Asean Summit with other regional leaders. On May 27, he was reportedly feeling fatigued and was advised by health experts to rest at IJN. Anwar also spoke about his conversation with President of Guinea-Bissau General Umaro Sissoco Embaló, during which he asked why Malaysia was chosen despite limited bilateral trade. "His answer was that he follows developments here and sees Malaysia as a country on the rise, with significant potential. That's why he chose to come," he said. Embaló arrived today for a three-day visit—his first since taking office as president in February 2020. Malaysia and Guinea-Bissau established diplomatic relations in November 1974. In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with Guinea-Bissau reached RM4.1 million, with Malaysian exports amounting to RM4.04 million and imports standing at RM0.06 million.
