Rachel Kolisi swaps ‘humble' Yaris for brand new Jetour X70 Plus

The Citizena day ago
Springbok captain Siya Kolisi's estranged wife now drives an SUV worth at least R454 900.
Rachel Kolisi, the estranged wife of double Rugby World Cup-winning Springbok captain Siya Kolisi has recently been in and out of the news a bit more than she perhaps would have expected.
The furore centres around her very public on-off choice of wheels, which went from a luxury Mercedes-Benz to an old Toyota Yaris, now back to a brand-new sponsored Jetour X70 Plus.
In a since deleted Instagram post, Rachel posted that 'Life has a funny way of humbling you just when you think you've got it all figured out. One day you're riding high, the next you're asking a friend to borrow their spare car and googling 'how to parallel park a Yaris with dignity'.
Rachel Kolisi's Instagram post has since been deleted.
Jetour jumps at opportunity
A post that many just took as a single mom throwing it out there about what she was experiencing as she begins to adjust to life away from the spotlight and perks of being the wife to one of the most recognised rugby players on the planet. But it was also a post the raised the ire of many who were quick to point out that they could only wish to own the somewhat tatty-looking old Toyota Yaris Rachel affectionately called Betsy. Many believed she was only in it for public sympathy and pitching for a new car after enjoying a somewhat pampered lifestyle.
Despite this somewhat spicy reception to her post, Jetour South Africa were quick on the draw. The manufacturer announced that Rachel was now an ambassadors for the brand. A fact she then confirmed in a new post on Instagram. 'Very excited and very grateful to be apart of the @jetour_south_africa family! Thank you @lmgsportsmanagement!'
Once again the public response has varied from those that wish her all the best and praise her hustle, to those that dismiss this as a cheap publicity stunt. Either way, Betsy the old Toyota Yaris is now out of the picture. And a smiling Rachel Kolisi has a brand-new set of wheels.

Rachel Kolisi 'perfect fit'
Jetour South Africa chimes in by saying: 'Rachel Kolisi is the perfect fit for the Jetour family. As a busy working mother, comfort, space and safety in the vehicle that she drives is paramount. As someone constantly on the move between school runs, fitness sessions, business meetings, and family life, Rachel embodies the dynamic spirit of Jetour's flagship seven-seater, the Jetour X70 Plus.'
The seven-seater Jetour X70 Plus is one of the Chinese carmaker's two models on offer in South Africa, with the other being five-seater Jetour Dashing. The X70 Plus costs R454 900 for the Momentum and R484 900 for the Deluxe. The Dashing Momentum and Deluxe sell for R439 900 and R469 900 respectively.

POWER broker: Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance driven

Ahead of me is a convoy of Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance super sports cars, on the world-famous Clarence Drive near Gordon's Bay. Along for the ride is the new SL 63 and CLE 53. It's a regular AMG Christmas in July. The concept behind the event was for media to sample a selection of the latest AMG products. In reverse power order, there's the six-cylinder 48V mild-hybrid CLE 53 AMG with 330 kW and 600 Nm. Then the AMG SL 63 Roadster (non-hybrid) twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8, good for 430 kW and 800 Nm. And finally, the top dog Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance with a scarcely believable 600 kW and 1 420 Nm of torque, aided by a 6.1 kWh plug-in battery on top of its twin-turbo V8. So, let's get driving … The fixed rear wing, 21-inch wheels and more aggressive bodywork takes the AMG GT's aesthetics up a notch. Image: Mercedes-Benz Press We pull hard through a series of sweeping bends towards a tight hairpin surrounded by unforgiving rock. Ahead of me is the SL 63 Roadster, which is certainly no hairdryer with its force-fed V8 guffawing at maximum voice. I've got the best bucket seat in the house as we attack the famed coast road that once played host to the Mercedes SLR world launch. Double-clutch transmissions rata-tata up and down shifts like a pair of intoxicated drum majorettes … Our duo roars in happy unison in the damp conditions, until the SL enters the next hairpin too cautiously and I line up alongside. The road is clear of traffic all the way around, so I squeeze the throttle and trust the Michelin Cup rubber is warm enough to grip up. Boy, does it ever! The electric-boosted Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance performs its teleportation trick and I slingshot tens of metres ahead in the blink of an eye. I drop anchor hard in the next hairpin with the standard carbon ceramic brakes and shove my surrounds into reverse. This gains me yet more distance on my open-top pursuer. This is exciting! Any worries the new-generation AMG GT would be too soft has been well and truly eliminated. Image: Mercedes-Benz Press Beyond the awe-inspiring figures – zero to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds and 320 km/h plus top speed, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance is simply a joy to drive. It clings hard to the tarmac with active aerodynamics, in the form of a movable front chin spoiler. There is a multi-mode traction control system so you can dial in just the right amount of electronic aid for the conditions. And rear-wheel steering helps pinch your line in tight corners and stabilise the chassis in the fast stuff. Now, in clear air with glorious open road ahead, I pin the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance's ears back. I trust the brute and I'm well and truly up to speed. The steering in Race mode is tight, suspension taut like a freshly tuned guitar string. We flow like electrified mercury, with speed and physics my guide. And allow me to report that the combination of twin-turbo V8 with instant electrical assistance on throttle is simply incredible. There is no lag, no hesitation, and all the while it's as if the drivetrain is pure and naturally aspirated. Yet, the savagery underfoot matches that of battery electric acceleration. Wow, just wow, what a piece of engineering, Affalterbach. The only part of the AMG super sports car most will get to see on the road. Image: Mercedes-Benz Press At the end of the pass, adrenalin purged, we pull over for some photography with the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance and vanquished SL 63 sister. Together, their AMG Panamericana grilles, long forward prow and cabin-back stance are unmistakably attractive. The high-tech, opulent cabins are wonderful, too, with more computing power on board than a space agency. Of course, they've shared a platform since the last AMG GT and both therefore qualify as ultimate dream cars. The SL 63 is for the exhibitionist in you and the Mercedes AMG 63 is if you love playing g-force dodgems with your internal organs. However, amongst their overflowing bag of talents, I'd proffer the real takeaway is how unintimidating they are to drive in every-day conditions. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance shows that electrification isn't something to shy away from. It can be utilised for all the right reasons in a super-sports-car application. And by Jove, if you could just keep it out of Race mode, it would be darn economical, too. Mercedes-Benz changes its mind again: A-Class staying till 2028

Three-pointed star's entry-level model will continue in production two years longer than initially planned reportedly as a result of ongoing demand. Mercedes-Benz A-Class has had its its lifecycle prolonged by another two years. Image: Mercedes-Benz Reported back in March as being discontinued next year, a new claim from Germany has alleged that Mercedes-Benz has extended the lifecycle of the current A-Class by another two years to 2028. Change of plan First announced in 2022 as being on the chopping block, the current W177 A-Class, which received its one and only update two years ago, will become the longest lasting generation yet based on the latest claims. Supposedly part of Benz's range reduction strategy announced two years ago, in which it aimed to reduce complexity by cutting its product portfolio from 33 to 14 models, the A-Class will now seemingly live on alongside the new CLA till before the end of the decade. ALSO READ: Mercedes-Benz makes it official: Current A-Class will be the last 'It's not our goal to be a competitor of the volume producers. That's not what the Mercedes-Benz brand stands for. So stay tuned as far as our product portfolio is concerned,' Mercedes-Benz CEO, Ola Källenius, told Britain's Autocar in 2022 about the time as the A-Class' pending demise. In a related statement, Mercedes-Benz's Chief Technology Officer, Markus Schäfer, told Italy's quattoruote, 'we need models that work all over the world, including China and the USA. I know that the hatchback is the favourite in Europe, but it was not part of the plans and we had to make choices, even difficult ones'. Why the U-turn? Largely believed to be replaced by the incoming junior G-Class, called g-Class that will also succeed the B-Class, GLA and GLB, Mercedes-Benz Production Head, Jorg Burzer, hinted that ongoing demand had been the reason for the decision to continue with A-Class production for the additional two years. Current B-Class will still be discontinued next year. Image: Mercedes-Benz This, according to Automotive News Europe's German outlet, Automobilwoche, in which the executive also confirmed the end of the B-Class by next year as still being on the cards. As such, production will move from Germany to Hungary for the A-Class' final two years, hinting that another series of updates could soon be applied on top of those rolled-out two years ago. Recap Locally, the A-Class range spans six models, two hatches and four sedans, priced from R813 124 for the A200 Progressive, to R991 046 for the A200d AMG Line Sedan. In addition, the current AMG based models including an three derivatives from R1 173 973 for the A35 Sedan, to R1 457 119 for the A45 S hatch.
