"Tired Today, Retired Tomorrow": Opposition's Jab At PM Over RSS Praise
The opposition has reacted with 'retirement benefits' jibes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's praise of the RSS - the ruling BJP' ideological mentor - in his Independence Day speech Friday.
The Prime Minister's reference and praise infuriated the Congress, which pointed out the RSS, or Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, had refused to hoist the national flag for the 52 years.
The party also declared Mr Modi's RSS remarks 'overtures' to an organisation seen as controlling the ruling party and playing a key role in appointments to senior posts in the government, including PM.
"The PM was tired today. Soon, he will be retired," Congress comms chief Jairam Ramesh said on X, and criticised the Prime Minister's speech as "stale, hypocritical, insipid".
"It is nothing but a desperate attempt to appease the organisation in the run-up to his 75th birthday next month," he said, referring to RSS boss Mohan Bhagwat's remarks - that veteran leaders should step back when they turn 75 and give the younger generation a chance.
Many took that remark to be aimed at Mr Modi, who will turn 75 in September.

The BJP has said no such rule exists; in March Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis pointed out one member of the union cabinet is over 'limit' - 80-year-old Bihar leader Jitan Ram Manjhi, who is the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Minister. Others, including Mr Modi are within a year or two.
Buzz about Mr Modi's 'future' - flagged by AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal last year - broke after the PM's March visit to Nagpur, which is where the RSS headquarters is located.
That was Mr Modi's first visit since becoming Prime Minister.
Meanwhile, Mr Ramesh also claimed the PM's I-Day speech lacked "any honest mention of the country's deep economic distress, unemployment crisis, and rapidly growing economic inequality".
The Congress' Salman Khurshid also hit out over the RSS remark.
"There are two views about the RSS. One is our view... and the other is that of PM Modi and his allies. There is a huge difference between the two... so I believe we should not touch that issue on such an auspicious day (i.e., Independence Day) ..." he said.
"They didn't hoist the flag for 52 years. They didn't contribute to the freedom movement. They opposed Mahatma Gandhi's Quit India Movement. They urged people to join the British Army to fight the Azad Hind Fauj. So, they had no contribution to the freedom movement..."
Mr Modi's praise of the RSS was also vigorously condemned by AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, who accused the Prime Minister of dishonouring the freedom struggle and politicising the day.
"The ideology of Hindutva believes in exclusion and is antithetical to the values of our Constitution. Modi could have gone to Nagpur to praise the RSS as a ' swayamsevak ', or worker. Why did he have to do it from the Red Fort as the Prime Minister?" he asked on X.
Glorifying the RSS in an Independence Day speech is an insult to the freedom struggle. The RSS and its ideological allies served as British foot soldiers. They never joined the fight for independence and hated Gandhi more than they ever opposed the British.

The CPI(M) also hit out. Party General Secretary MA Baby said, "It is deeply regrettable that PM Modi, in his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, chose to praise the RSS - an organisation with a dubious historical record and an organisation that had no role whatsoever in freedom struggles... consistently sought to undermine national unity along religious lines..."
Mr Modi had called the RSS 'the world's biggest non-governmental organisation' in his 103-minute I-Day address. That was his first ever reference to the RSS in any formal Independence Day talk. The RSS marks its 100th anniversary this year.
"Today I want to mention one thing with great pride. 100 years ago an organisation was born - the RSS. Its 100 years of national service has been a very proud and glorious page (in India's history)," Mr Modi, who has been an RSS pracharak, or worker, in the past, declared.
"For the past 100 years, RSS workers have dedicated their lives to fulfil the resolve of 'vyakti nirman' (character development) and 'rashtra nirman' (nation-building) ..." he declared.

Farmers to lay siege to Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on August 20
Members of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Karnataka State Sugarcane Growers' Association will lay siege to the Vidhana Soudha on August 20, seeking the implementation of their long-pending demands. At a press conference here on Saturday, H. Bhagyaraj, president of the sugarcane growers' association, said that farmers will also hold a 'satyagraha' at Freedom Park in Bengaluru. Though the country celebrated Independence Day on August 15,there was little for farmers to celebrate as the government had failed to ensure scientific pricing for agricultural produce, he said. Mr. Bhagyaraj said that the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for 2025-26 should be fixed at ₹4,500 per ton, and harvesting and transportation costs must be borne by the sugar factories. The farmers also expressed concern that the weighing scales are not scientifically calibrated, as a result of which they suffer losses. This should be avoided by installing the weighing scales in front of the factories so that the farmers can monitor the process as well, they said. Mr. Bhagyaraj pointed out that the factories owed dues to the tune of ₹950 crores to sugarcane farmers, and added that this should be cleared immediately. Drawing attention to the shortage of fertilizers, the association said that the issue has been politicised by both the State and the Centre, and that it was the responsibility of the governments to ensure the availability of fertilizers and its smooth distribution. The authorities were urged to crack down on traders creating artificial scarcity by hoarding fertilizer stocks or selling them at a price higher than the rates fixed by the government. Mr. Bhagyaraj urged the government to implement the Mekedatu project without further delay, and blamed the Centre and the State for failing to expedite the works. The farmers stated that banks tend to insist on CIBIL scores before releasing agricultural loans, and hence urged the government to change the policy and delink CIBIL scores from farm loans. Any delay in repayment of loan due to crop failure or vagaries of nature has a negative bearing on the CIBIL score and affects the farmers, the association said. Drawing attention to the low penetration of crop insurance among farmers, the association said that the policy and insurance schemes should be tweaked to make a particular land of the farmer concerned as the unit area of insurance. When the unit area for crop insurance is too large, individual farmers suffer because damage to their crops may be overlooked and their claims rejected, if conditions in other parts of the area are considered normal, it added. Other demands included immediate release of ₹1,000 crore by way of incentives which is pending for dairy farmers, establishment of crop and milk procurement centres at the gram panchayat level, rescinding the Land Reforms Act and APMC (Amendment) Act, implementation of the recommendations of M.S. Swaminathan Committee, a law ensuring statutory guarantee of Minimum Support Price for farmers' produce, etc.

ED searches DMK minister Periyasamy's residences
CHENNAI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided the houses, business premises and even the MLA hostel rooms of the state rural development minister I Periyasamy and his family members, including his son, IP Senthilkumar MLA, in Chennai and Dindigul, their hometown. Meanwhile, the secretary of the assembly secretariat, K Srinavasan, lodged a complaint with Triplicane police alleging that 'unknown persons' had trespassed into the MLA hostel. City police acknowledged the receipt of the complaint by issuing a community service receipt (CSR). Sources said authorities locked the minister's cabin in the Secretariat in anticipation that ED teams might land there too, but ED sleuths stopped with the residence and the MLA hostel. Simultaneous searches happened in three places in Dindigul: the minister's residence in Durairaj Nagar, Senthilkumar's residence at Vallalar Nagar, and the minister's daughter Indra's residence at Seelapadi. After the information about the raids spread, DMK cadres gathered in front of the houses in large numbers. While the CRPF personnel guarded the premises, state police personnel were deployed in the localities concerned to maintain the law and order situation. This is strongly condemnable,' he said. It may be noted that the Madras high court had recently reversed the order of the Dindigul trial court, which relieved the DMK leader and his family members in the Rs 2 crore disproportionate assets case. The case pertains to the accumulation of assets to the tune of Rs 2 crore between 2006 and 2010 when Periyasamy was the housing minister. While DVAC filed a chargesheet against Periyasamy, his wife Suseela, and sons Senthilkumar and Prabhu, the ED also registered a money-laundering case based on the DVAC FIR and interrogated Periyasamy in 2022. However, the Dindigul trial court acquitted all of them from the case. But the Madras high court set aside the trial court order in April and ordered a fresh trial.

SC verdict in case of sarpanch election in Haryana is a warning for BJP, says Raut
Nashik: Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut said the Supreme Court verdict on the counting of votes polled through EVM for the sarpanch post of Haryana's Bavanu Lakhu village, where the SC reversed the presiding officer's decision after three years, indicates that BJP will cease to exist if the counting of EVM votes nationwide is conducted properly. Raut was in Nashik on Friday. Speaking to reporters, he said Mohit Kumar lost the sarpanch election in the village and challenged the results in higher courts until the case reached Supreme Court over about three years. "Mohit Kumar believed in what he claimed, that the presiding officer had transferred the votes meant for him into the name of the opponent. The SC got the votes counted. When we lose elections, we keep crying in the name of govt and election commission. Instead, what we need to do is challenge the decision in the court of law and stand by what we claim. If this happens, this will be a problem for BJP and it will cease to exist," said Raut. "This indicates that Narendra Modi was elected prime minister only through EVM scam. Same is the case with Devendra Fadnavis, who was elected Maharashtra chief minister," Raut added.
