Scott McTominay's first coach reveals where Man Utd went wrong with Napoli star

Daily Mirror2 days ago

Scott McTominay won Serie A with Napoli and established himself as a club hero in Italy under Antonio Conte after completing a move from Manchester United less than 12 months ago
Scott McTominay is thriving at Napoli because of the faith placed in him by Antonio Conte says his first Manchester United coach. The Scotland international has become a hero in the south of Italy after helping Napoli to win Serie A in his debut season.
McTominay joined the Italian giants last summer in a £26million deal to depart Old Trafford after 22 years. And the 28-year-old hit the ground running to scored 13 goals on the way to the title, including six goals in the final seven games of the campaign.

Ex-United boss Erik ten Hag did not want to see McTominay exit the club last summer but the midfielder has clearly taken on a more prominent role at his new club. McTominay started 33 of 34 league games he appeared in this term in contrast to 18 of 34 in 2023/24 at United.

Charlie Jackson, founder of Matrix Soccer Academy and McTominay's first coach at United, believes the trust placed in him has been pivotal to the Scot's success. The coach, who has also worked with Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton and Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson, reckons Jose Mourinho is the other figure to have inspired McTominay to such a degree.
Jackson, who describes McTominay as 'tenaciouos' and eager to learn as a child, believes the Serie A superstar thrives when provided with support.
"Jose was just fantastic for him," Jackson told the Sun."Gave him his debut, looked after him. Scott always works off confidence and a pat on the back.

"If you believe in him, he'll run over coals for you. Conte's done that. Mourinho did that as well.'
Jackson believes McTominay will continue to improve and show he is worthy of being labelled as world class. "The best is yet to come for him," he said.
"I don't think you've seen anything yet. I used to say to his dad Frank, 'He'll never be looked at as world class and it's a shame but he should be because he is'.

"He had success with Man United but to go and do what he's now done . . . and there is much, much more to come. That's the biggest thing that I can say about him — it's just the tip of the iceberg, honestly.'
And Jackson believes McTominay's talents have been present right from the beginning. Coaching the star when he was still just five years old, was under no illusion that the Napoli ace would make it to the very top.
He said: "There were no video phones in those days but I wish we could have filmed him as you'd have seen a special player. I've got his first shirt, his first training shirt and his first football — that we've got in a glass case — because you knew. You just knew.'

Fernandes rejects Al-Hilal offer to stay at Manchester United

June 3 (Reuters) - Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes turned down the opportunity to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal in order to keep playing "at the highest level", he said on Tuesday. The Portuguese midfielder admitted that he had considered the move, which media reports said was worth four times his current salary, after being contacted by Al-Hilal's president. "There was that possibility, the president of Al-Hilal called me a month ago to ask me about it," Fernandes, who is preparing to face Germany with Portugal, told reporters on Tuesday. "It was a big offer, very ambitious. There was a waiting period for me to think about the future." Fernandes ultimately decided to stay at United and said he was motivated by his desire to continue playing at the top level and encouraged by his family and the club's coach Ruben Amorim. "I would be willing to do it if Manchester United thought so," Fernandes added. "I spoke to the coach Ruben Amorim who really tried to talk me out of it. The club said they would not be willing to sell me, only if I wanted to leave. "I spoke to my wife and family, and she asked me what my personal goals were in my career. "It would have been easy to move there but I want to keep myself at the highest level, playing in the big competitions and I feel capable of it. I am happy with my decision." The 30-year-old Fernandes scored 19 goals and provided 19 assists in 57 appearances across all competitions for United last season, winning the club's Player of the Year award for the fourth time. However, it was a season to forget for the team, as they finished 15th in the Premier League, their lowest league finish in half a century, and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

Bruno Fernandes ‘wants to stay at the highest level' as he turns down Saudi move

The 30-year-old midfielder has been the subject of speculation linking him with a £100million switch to Al Hilal, with the Saudi Pro League side reportedly prepared to pay him £700,000 per week. However, Fernandes confirmed he had rejected the chance to move after speaking to Ruben Amorim and his family. 'The president of Al Hilal called me a month ago to ask about the possibility of me moving there,' Fernandes told a Portugal press conference, according to Portuguese outlet O Jogo. 'I had to wait a while to think about the future. As I've always said, I would be willing to do it if United thought it was best to move on. 'I spoke with Ruben Amorim, who really tried to talk me out of it. 'I spoke to the club, who said they weren't willing to sell me, only if I wanted to leave. 'From my side, it was a very ambitious proposal, the president was a fantastic person. I never talked about the money, it ended up coming up later, with my agent. 'I had to make the decision as a family and understand what I wanted for my future. That was the question my wife asked, what my professional goals would be. At no point did she say yes or no, she always supported me and put my professional side first. 'It was an easy move, even at a family level. I had Ruben Neves, Joao Cancelo. My children are used to playing with theirs. 'But I simply want to stay at the highest level, playing in the big competitions, because I still feel capable of that. 'I want to continue to be happy and do what I love most. I'm still very passionate about this sport. It's my way of seeing football and I'm happy with my decision.' As rumours of Fernandes' decision circulated earlier in the day, former United and England defender Gary Neville welcomed the reports as Amorim starts the process of reshaping his squad following a dismal season. Neville told Sky Sports News: 'It's significant. Our first signing of the summer has been agreed 🇧🇷✍️#MUFC — Manchester United (@ManUtd) June 1, 2025 'To turn that money down at a point where Manchester United are at their lowest ebb and say, 'No, I want to fight through this, I want to see it through the other side, I want to come out and achieve things,' I think it says a lot about him as a person, as a character.' United have already made one move in the transfer market this summer by signing Brazil forward Matheus Cunha from Wolves, and they are also being heavily linked with Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo. Departures could include Jadon Sancho, although latest reports have suggested Chelsea are prepared to pay a penalty fee to escape an obligation to make his current loan permanent. Seemingly in anticipation of his Stamford Bridge exit, Sancho posted on X on Tuesday night: 'Grateful for the experience. Big love to everyone at Chelsea who made me feel at home — team-mates, staff and the fans. Wishing the club all the best moving forward. Truly grateful, thank you Blues.'
