Astros' Framber Valdez aims to end mini slump vs. Orioles

Reuters7 hours ago
August 15 - Houston Astros manager Joe Espada insisted on immediately flushing a 13-run loss to the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday in the middle game of a three-game series between postseason contenders.
Houston did precisely that in the form of a 4-1 victory over the Red Sox on Wednesday. That win, combined with the Seattle Mariners' road losses to the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday and Thursday, leaves the Astros with a 1 1/2-game lead in the American League West.
The Astros will conclude their six-game homestand with a three-game series against the Orioles starting Friday night.
With the Mariners hot on their heels and injuries continuing to ravage their roster, the Astros have maintained their focus on stringing together series victories. With the stretch run set to commence, there are few goals more pressing.
"That's three series in a row that we've won," Espada said. "I think that's very important."
Framber Valdez (11-5, 2.97 ERA) will start the series opener for the Astros on Friday.
Following a 13-start stretch in which he went 10-0 with a 1.86 ERA and the Astros won each game, Houston has dropped three consecutive games with Valdez on the mound, and the left-hander has scuffled in back-to-back outings (0-1, 6.94 ERA). Valdez allowed a total of 10 runs (nine earned) in his past two starts. He surrendered a combined 11 runs (10 earned) in his previous eight starts.
Valdez is 1-1 with a 4.19 ERA over six career appearances (five starts) against the Orioles. He split a pair of decisions against the Orioles last season, posting a 2.84 ERA with 15 strikeouts across 12 2/3 innings. In his home start against Baltimore on June 23, 2024, Valdez allowed one run on six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts across seven innings in an 8-1 victory.
Rookie right-hander Brandon Young (0-6, 6.70 ERA) is in line to start for the Orioles.
After producing his first career quality start on July 29 against the Toronto Blue Jays by surrendering two runs over six innings, Young has allowed eight runs (six earned) and posted a 7.04 ERA over 7 2/3 innings stretched across two starts this month. Young worked a season-low three innings in an 11-3 loss to the Athletics on Saturday.
Young will make his first career appearance against the Astros. He is 0-3 with a 4.58 ERA in four road starts this season.
The Orioles claimed the decisive game of their three-game series against the Mariners on Thursday with a 5-3 win. Right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano followed a strong effort from Trevor Rogers on Wednesday by allowing one run on three hits and one walk with two strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.
Rogers limited Seattle to one run on four hits and no walks with six strikeouts over seven innings to help snap the Mariners' eight-game winning streak.
"Our starting pitching has been great recently," Orioles third baseman Jordan Westburg said. "I know the season hasn't gone exactly the way that we wanted it to, but I've been really proud and pleased with the way our starters have gone out there and competed. We haven't scored a ton of runs behind them, but hopefully that will change.
"These guys are bulldogs, and we appreciate it."

Little League begs fans to stop betting on World Series games involving children

Little League has implored fans to stop betting on games involving children and issued a plea on social media as its World Series gets underway. 'While Little League® International continues to monitor the complexity and ever-evolving world of sports betting, we feel strongly that there is no place for betting on Little League games or on any youth sports competition,' league officials said. 'Little League is a trusted place where children are learning the fundamentals of the games and all the important life lessons that come with having fun, celebrating teamwork, and playing with integrity, and no one should be exploiting the success and failures of children playing the game they love for their own personal gain,' the statement concluded. The 2025 Little League World Series is currently underway and is held annually in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania. It features 20 baseball teams, 10 from the United States and 10 international squads, with many games televised regionally and nationally. The participants are between 10 and 12 years old. Major sportsbooks steer clear of taking bets on youth tournaments as states ban markets where most athletes are under 18. However, unregulated overseas operators continue to take bets. These sportsbooks are untaxed and offer no consumer protections. The brand manager of one such site, in its fourth year offering LLWS odds, told the Patch it anticipates more wagers on these games than on any professional tennis or soccer match over the next two weeks. an offshore gambling site based in Panama, remains one of the most visible operators allowing such bets. It is unlicensed in the U.S. and has faced repeated legal challenges, including cease-and-desist orders from state officials, but continues to offer bets markets regardless. Since a 2018 Supreme Court ruling allowed states to legalize sports betting, ads have surged, and major leagues such as MLB, NFL and NBA have partnered with gambling companies. The 2025 Little League World Series has already made headlines after a former security worker at its headquarters was charged with multiple counts of terroristic threats and harassment after allegedly threatening a 'mass casualty event.'

Lerone Murphy to ‘let it all go' against Aaron Pico at UFC 319 to convince Dana White & Co. to give him title shot

LERONE MURPHY admits he'll have to be the "BEST" he's ever been against Aaron Pico to convince Dana White and Co. that he deserves a shot at the featherweight title. The Manchester 'Miracle' returns to the cage early on Sunday morning in the co-main event of a stacked UFC 319 card in Chicago. 8 8 8 8 Murphy will put his eight-fight win streak, unbeaten record and his No.6 ranking on the line when he welcomes the Bellator veteran to mixed martial arts' premier promotion. And he knows he needs to make a statement against the former super-prospect to make himself the undeniable next contender for Alexander Volkanovski 's 145lbs strap. In an exclusive interview with SunSport, he said: "It's a massive spot, UFC 319. "You've got Khamzat Chimaev in the main event against Dricus Du Plessis, which is a big fight as well. "All eyes are going to be on the card. The whole main card is stacked, the whole card is stacked! "I'm looking forward to performing on that. And now, I have to let it all go, be myself and show everybody that I'm title worthy." Pico was initially set to face the undefeated Movsar Evloev in a No.1 contender's match before the Russian was forced to withdraw from their showdown. And Murphy reckons it only makes sense for him to be Volkanovski's next assignment if he gets the job done in style this weekend. 8 "Him [Pico] versus Movsar was a No.1 contender fight, which the UFC themselves said so," he said. "And if I'm the replacement and I go out and beat Aaron Pico, it only makes sense. "I'll be 17-0 and will have overlapped Movsar because he didn't take the fight when he could have taken the fight. So all fingers point in the direction of the champion from there." Even if he doesn't get his hand raised after a viral stoppage, Murphy believes matchmakers should reward his near-perfect octagon run with the chance to become the UK's fourth-ever UFC champion. "If you don't win the fight [by finish], it shouldn't mean you don't get a title shot," he said. "There have been plenty of guys who have done that. "The Max Holloways [of the world], they didn't always finish fights. "Volkanovski didn't always finish fights. It's only once they became champions that they started to finish fights. "I'm not a casual, I like to watch pure MMA. So if somebody is good, is going to look good and is entertaining to watch, then why can't they be champion?" Murphy may believe he's in the ideal spot to stake a claim for a title shot, but the risk-to-reward ratio for his short-notice Chi-Town clash with Pico is incredibly high. A maiden defeat will see the Manchester Top Team standout go back to the drawing board and start his pursuit of UFC gold all over again. A sensational stoppage or a one-sided display, meanwhile, will prompt the often vocal minority of fans to claim he "fraud checked" long-hyped prospect Pico. But Murphy could care little about the outside noise, unless it's fans clamouring for him to get a crack at 145lbs gold. He said: "The casuals are always going to find something to say, regardless of anything. "I could go out there and KO Volkanovski in ten seconds, and they're going to say, 'He's past his prime.' I have to let it all go, be myself and show everybody that I'm a title worthy." Lerone Murphy 8 8 "There's always something that they're going to pick at. So I don't watch anything like that." He added: "People are always going to create narratives that they're going to follow. "I never look at that, I just follow in my journey and do my thing." California clubber Pico was once one of the hottest prospects in MMA before vicious back-to-back knockout losses to Henry Corrales and Adam Borics derailed his hype train. The 28-year-old former Junior Golden Gloves champion has done a brilliant job rebuilding himself, losing just one of his last ten fights. "I think I'm fighting the best Aaron Pico there has been," Murphy said of his latest challenge. "Obviously, in the early days, that was him transitioning into MMA from wrestling and boxing. 8 "So he was still putting it together. "Right now, he's got the experience, and I'm fighting the best Aaron Pico." He added: "It's going to be a full MMA match. I've got to be dangerous everywhere and be aware everywhere. Obviously, he can wrestle and he can box. "I'm going to be looking for submissions, I'm going to be looking to time him on the way in. "There is plenty of opportunity which comes with his style and plenty of dangers, obviously. "So I've got to the best version of me."

Peter Mandelson: Let Britain host the Super Bowl

Like Halloween or Thanksgiving, the Super Bowl is a quintessentially American affair. Britain has already imported commercialised versions of the former and now efforts are being made to bring the flagship sporting event across the pond too. The idea has been floated by Lord Mandelson, the British ambassador to the United States, who admitted he had been on a mission to bring the National Football League (NFL)'s championship fixture to the UK since starting his role in February. 'I've made a big pitch for the first Super Bowl outside the US to take place in Britain,' he told the Chicago Council on Global Affairs on Thursday, asking if there were any NFL workers in the audience. Mandelson with President Trump in May JIM WATSON/AFP VIA GETTY IMAGES 'I want that Super Bowl in Britain. I don't care when it takes place but I want it announced while I'm ambassador,' Mandelson added, to audience laughter. 'We love it, we love it.'
