Report on free bus travel for women to be placed before Andhra Cabinet tomorrow

VIJAYAWADA: Transport, Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy on Monday announced that elaborate arrangements are underway to launch the free bus travel scheme for women from August 15.
The ministerial committee, which was constituted to study similar schemes in other states, has submitted its report to the government. A final decision will be made during the Cabinet meeting scheduled for August 6.
Addressing the media at the Secretariat, Ramprasad Reddy said the scheme was among the key promises made by the TDP-led NDA coalition under its 'Super Six' guarantees. He added that Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu had directed him and APSRTC officials to ensure the scheme is implemented without lapses.
Under the scheme, women and transgender individuals will be allowed to travel for free in services such as Pallevelugu, Ultra Pallevelugu, City Ordinary, Express, and Metro Express buses, covering about 74 per cent of the APSRTC fleet. Passengers must carry valid ID proof such as Aadhaar, Voter ID and a ration card or any other issued by the State and the Union governments.
Once implemented, about 6,700 buses will be operated under the scheme, which is expected to cost around `1,950 crore annually for the APSRTC.
The minister also said the government has taken steps to procure 3,000 electric buses this year, with another 1,400 to be added over the next two years. Recruitment of drivers and mechanics will also be undertaken to meet growing demand.

BJP to Thackeray: People have shown who is ‘Chief Minister' and who is ‘Thief Minister'

The BJP on Monday sharply criticised Shiv Sena (UBT) for the party's protest demanding the removal of tainted ministers from the BJP-led MahaYuti government in Maharashtra. Revenue Minister and former state unit chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule targeted Uddhav Thackeray and claimed, "Who is the leader of extortionists? The public knows. What's more, in the Assembly elections, the people of Maharashtra have clearly shown who is the 'Chief Minister' and who is the 'Thief Minister.' "Is Waze some kind of Laden (Osama Bin Laden)? The public hasn't forgotten that under your leadership, a hundred crore extortion racket was running by placing gelatin outside industrialists' homes." "So, before criticising respected Devendra ji, recall your own past and think before you speak,' remarked Bawankule in his post on X. 'As for the rest, Maharashtra has seen your worth in the last row of the INDIA alliance. Even today, you didn't join the protests in Delhi because you'd have to stand in the last row, and instead, you staged a protest here with a few claps. While Rahul Gandhi's protest was going on there, you tried in vain to draw attention by setting up your own separate stove. "Uddhav ji, when you were Chief Minister, you had strangled democracy and morality. Before pointing fingers at an honest leader like Devendra, you should look at yourself in the mirror. Devendra Fadnavis' work is not just about a corruption-free Maharashtra but also about providing a stable, development-oriented, and transparent administration. The people of Maharashtra have full faith in CM Devendra's leadership. They are fed up with you,' said Bawankule. On the other hand, BJP legislator Atul Bhatkhalkar attacked Thackeray saying that the people of Mumbai were laughing at him for staging a protest against him, especially when during the Shiv Sena rule in the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation several cases of corruption including Mithi river clean up, 'khichadi' distribution during the Coronavirus, among others, were reported. 'During two-and-half years of chief ministership, Uddhav Thackeray did not visit Mantralaya but operated from home. Now he has hit the streets against corruption. Tell the people, why did you not come to Mantralaya in two-and-half years. "The sitting chief minister (Devendra Fadnavis) enacted the Lok Ayukta legislation to include the chief minister in it, but you and your party opposed it. Why did you oppose that provision? So those who have looted BMC for 15 years are now protesting against the corruption. The citizens of Mumbai are laughing at you,' he claimed.

Israel Launches Heaviest Strikes In Weeks On Gaza As Netanyahu Signals Expanded Offensive

Last Updated: Residents in Gaza reported intense shelling and airstrikes in the eastern neighbourhoods of Sabra, Zeitoun, and Shejaia. Israel on Monday launched some of the heaviest air and ground attacks in weeks on Gaza City on, just hours after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he expected to complete a new, expanded military offensive in the enclave 'fairly quickly." Residents in Gaza reported intense shelling and airstrikes in the eastern neighbourhoods of Sabra, Zeitoun, and Shejaia. Witnesses said Israeli tanks and warplanes pounded the densely populated areas through the night, forcing hundreds of families to flee their homes and move further west. According to Hamas, around one million displaced people are now sheltering in Gaza City, many of them pushed out of northern areas by previous Israeli operations. The Israeli military confirmed it had targeted Hamas militants in the area and said artillery units had dismantled a rocket launch site east of Gaza City. However, there was no immediate ground advance, despite Netanyahu's comments suggesting a broader push was imminent. Speaking on Sunday, Netanyahu said he had instructed the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) to accelerate preparations for a new phase of the war focused on Gaza City, which he called the 'capital of terrorism." He also indicated that central Gaza could be the next target, claiming Hamas fighters had regrouped there. Six Journalists Killed In Hospital Strike In one of the deadliest incidents for journalists during the conflict, an Israeli airstrike hit a tent inside the Al Shifa Hospital compound, killing six reporters, including well-known Al Jazeera correspondent Anas Al Sharif. Israeli forces confirmed the strike and claimed Al Sharif was a Hamas member involved in rocket attacks. Al Jazeera and Al Sharif's family strongly denied the allegations, with the journalist himself publicly refuting such claims before his death. 'The assassination of journalists and the intimidation of those who remain pave the way for a major crime that the occupation is planning to commit in Gaza City," said Hamas in a statement. The Hamas-run Gaza Government Media Office said 238 journalists have been killed since the war began, while the Committee to Protect Journalists puts the toll at 186. The conflict began when Hamas-led militants stormed into Israel on 7 October 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Israeli officials say about 50 hostages remain in Gaza, with only around 20 believed to be alive. Since then, Gaza's Health Ministry reports that more than 61,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's military campaign. The region remains in the grip of a deep humanitarian crisis, with much of Gaza reduced to rubble and its population repeatedly displaced. view comments Location : Palestine News world Israel Launches Heaviest Strikes In Weeks On Gaza As Netanyahu Signals Expanded Offensive Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Free Bus Travel For Girls, Women, Transgender In Andhra From August 15

Amaravati: All girls, women, and transgender persons holding Andhra Pradesh domicile are eligible for free bus travel under the 'Stree Shakti' (woman power) scheme, to be launched statewide on August 15, Principal Secretary (Transport, Roads & Buildings) Kantilal Dande said on Monday. "Beneficiaries include all girls, women, and transgender persons with domicile status in Andhra Pradesh, subject to presenting valid identity proof," Mr Dande said in a government order. The scheme will be implemented using the existing fleet of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC), with additional buses to be procured based on demand, he added. Free travel will apply only to Pallevelugu, Ultra Pallevelugu, City Ordinary, Metro Express, and Express services. It will not cover non-stop services, interstate operations, contract carriages, chartered services, or package tours. Saptagiri Express, Ultra Deluxe, Super Luxury, Star Liner, and all air-conditioned services are also excluded, he said. For passenger safety, the government is considering equipping staff with body-worn cameras and installing CCTV cameras in all buses. Bus stations will see upgraded amenities such as fans, chairs, drinking water, and toilets. Mr Dande said the procurement of electric buses and extending the scheme to them could also be considered, subject to Cabinet approval. Beneficiaries will receive zero-fare tickets, which APSRTC will submit to the government for reimbursement. Free bus travel for women was a poll promise of the TDP-led NDA government ahead of the 2024 elections. The scheme is estimated to cost Rs 1,942 crore annually-about Rs 162 crore a month-and aims to empower women by improving access to education, jobs, and mobility, Minister K Parthasarathy had earlier said.
