Diogo Jota's 'best friend' at Liverpool shares heartbreaking tribute after crash
Former Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has published a lengthy tribute to Diogo Jota after the tragic news of his sudden death. The pair spent five years as team-mates at Anfield and struck up a particularly fond friendship, with Jota even referring to the Irishman as his closest pal on Merseyside.
The football community was rocked on Thursday after it emerged Jota, 28, had died in a car accident alongside his brother, Andre Silva. The pair were travelling in a Lamborghini near Zamora in Spain when it veered off the road and burst into flames, killing both before emergency services arrived.
Figures in the sport from across the world have paid tribute to the Premier League champion. And now Kelleher, who attended Jota's wedding to wife Rute Cardoso less than a fortnight prior to his death, has penned his own heartfelt message to his late former team-mate.
"Jots. Can't believe I'm writing this right now and I'm finding it hard to put into words," read the 26-year-old's Instagram post. "I'm absolutely devastated by this news. All my thoughts and condolences are with Rute and their three beautiful kids and Diogo and Andre's family. It was a such a pleasure to get to know you over these years and to share some special memories on the pitch and even more so off it.
"You became one of my closest friends in football. We bonded over all things sports watching any football match we could find often your brother Andre's game on your iPad.
"I was surprised a lad from Portugal loved sports such as darts, snooker and horse racing so much and some of my best memories were having a laugh watching them with you.
"You were such a fun genuine, normal down to earth and loving family man and always very competitive. I'm gonna miss our pre match programme quiz. I feel so blessed and grateful to have seen you on your happiest day, the day of your wedding and to be able to share in that day with you was special. I'll never forget it.
"You were deeply loved by everyone at the club, the city and all over the world. It's gonna hurt for a long time and I'm gonna miss you so much but I feel so lucky to have got know you and have such a good friend. Love you Diogo."
The testimony revealed the extent of their bond off the field, illustrated by the fact Kelleher was present for one of the biggest days in Jota's life. Kelleher, who joined Brentford in an £18million deal earlier this summer, and Liverpool let-back Andy Robertson were each present as Jota and teenage sweetheart Rute tied the knot in their hometown of Porto.
Both Kelleher and Robertson were also at Jota's side when they took in some horse races at Gloucestershire racecourse together in March. However, it's clear their bond ran far deeper than sport alone.
Jota previously attested to Kelleher being his best friend in the Liverpool squad in a union few might have expected. When asked whom his best Anfield pal was in 2024, the Portuguese replied: "Nowadays I would say Caoimhin. There have been a few departing the squad.
"We play a quiz game, we play each other. There is one on the match day programme. It is a good way to start the match day action."
One fan replied to Kelleher's sorrowful post, saying: "Sorry for your loss Caoimhin. We could all see how close you are. It's absolutely devastating."
Republic of Ireland team-mates John Egan and Adam Idah also responded with love heart emojis as a show of support for their countryman.

The first group of Arne Slot's squad were scheduled to attend the club's AXA training complex on Friday for the opening round of physical tests after their summer break. Advertisement However, the PA news agency understands that has been postponed as the club deals with the aftermath of the shocking tragedy which saw 28-year-old Jota and his brother Andre Silva killed in a car crash in Spain in the early hours of Thursday. Mourners gathered at a wake in Portugal on Friday morning, ahead of the brothers' funeral at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar in Sao Cosme at 10am on Saturday. Caitlyn Jenner inundated with condolences after Sophia Hutchins' shock death aged 29
Caitlyn Jenner has been flooded with messages of condolences after news broke that her best friend and manager Sophia Hutchins died in a tragic quad bike accident. Hutchins died aged 29 after she plunged 350ft down a cliff near the reality star's Malibu home, it was revealed Thursday. It is believed that her ATV struck the bumper of a moving car and was thrown down a ravine. First responders pronounced Hutchins dead at the scene. The two individuals in the car struck by Hutchins and the ATV were not injured. At the time of writing, it is not yet known if Caitlyn witnessed Hutchins' crash or was at home at the time of the tragedy on Wednesday. In the hours that have followed the news of Hutchins' shock death, social media users have inundated Caitlyn with condolences. Commenting underneath a picture of the former Olympian's L'Équipe magazine cover from July 2024, which is pinned to the top of her Instagram profile, one said: 'I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your dear loved one Sophia.' 'Very, very, very sorry for your loss,' added another. A third wrote: 'Sorry to hear about Sophia. She was too young to go.' Echoing a similar sentiment, another said: 'Deepest condolences to you and all the families of Sophia.' 'My heart is hurting for you right now!' a fifth continued. 'Hugs and prayers.' Hutchins, like Caitlyn, was transgender and cited her as the inspiration for coming out in college back in 2016. In 2017, she moved into Jenner's $3.5 million Malibu mansion and began working as the star's manager, taking over the role from Jenner's ex-wife Kris Jenner, 69, after their 2015 divorce. Hutchins was Jenner's confidant for over a decade after the celebrated Olympian, 75, came out as a transgender woman in 2015. She met Caitlyn that year and appeared in multiple episodes of the television documentary series I Am Cait, a spin-off of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Despite living under one roof, Hutchins previously told The New York Times that they 'were never romantically involved,' insisting it was all about work and friendship. 'Caitlyn is a parent to me. I have said that a million times. It is a parental, familial relationship,' she said. Social media users have inundated Caitlyn with condolences In 2020, Hutchins posed for an online ad campaign for Kim Kardashian's highly successful clothing line SKIMS. She was particularly close to Kris Jenner, speaking to her regularly, and also had a good relationship with Jenner's daughters Kendall, 29, and Kylie, 27. The siblings once gave Hutchins a stunning heart-shaped diamond necklace for Christmas. 'I'm on good terms with all the family, but I'm closest with Kris, Kim, Kylie and Kendall', she said. Hutchins' last public appearance with Caitlyn was in 2024 when she accompanied the reality star to the April 2024 White House Correspondents Dinner in Washington, D.C. Like Caitlyn, Hutchins was a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement. Last year, Hutchins had the opportunity to meet the billionaire. At the time, she uploaded a photo of herself beaming beside Trump in front of an American flag with the caption: 'The energy, passion, and commitment for our movement to Save America has never been greater! We will never give up.' In January of this year, Hutchins uploaded a photo of herself and Jenner celebrating Trump's inauguration with Judge Jeanine Pirro and other MAGA superstars to Instagram. Hutchins wasn't very active on social media in recent months. She last posted what would be her final Instagram post in April and showed fans a broken candelabra that had been repaired.

Portuguese player pays tribute to Diogo Jota during Wimbledon doubles match
Cabral, the world number 40 in men's doubles, was seen with the ribbon on his shirt sleeve during his second-round defeat on Friday, after the All England Club relaxed its strict all-white dress code to allow tributes to the Liverpool forward. Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva died in a car crash in Spain on Thursday while travelling to catch a ferry to the UK ahead of pre-season. Cabral said he was driving to Wimbledon when he heard the news, describing the footballer as 'an idol, such an icon, such a good person' in Portugal. Francisco Cabral wore a black ribbon on his sleeve (Mike Egerton/PA) 'I just wish all the best for his family,' he added. 'He's very inspiring for me.' Liverpool fan and British doubles player Neal Skupski had also brought a black armband for his match on Thursday but opted not to wear it. The 25-year-old then found out about the death of his grandmother shortly after coming off court of his first-round win alongside fellow Briton Joe Salisbury. Skupski suggested he may wear one later in the tournament, saying: 'Maybe in the next couple of days.'
