Two sitting Rajasthan MLAs sentenced to 1-year jail in 2014 road blocking case

Indian Express5 hours ago

Two Congress legislators from Rajasthan are among nine who were sentenced to a year in jail Wednesday for blocking a major road during a protest in 2014.
All nine, including Shahpura MLA Manish Yadav and Ladnun MLA Mukesh Bhakar, were found guilty under sections 147 (punishment for rioting) and 283 (causing danger or obstruction in a public way or line of navigation).
The court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of Jaipur also imposed a fine of Rs 3,200 on the convicts, which includes Congress leader Abhishek Chaudhary, who unsuccessfully contested the 2023 Rajasthan assembly polls from Jhotwara.
Although they have been convicted, Yadav and Bhakar will not face disqualification from the Rajasthan assembly since the jail terms are under the two years mandated under The Representation of the People Act, 1951.
The convicts were part of an August 2014 protest at Rajasthan University. According to court documents, the protesters from the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) blocked the Jawaharlal Nehru Marg outside the main gate of Rajasthan University for 20 minutes, prompting the police to book them.
Police filed a chargesheet in the case on August 11, 2016. Yadav was then part of the ABVP but he eventually joined the Congress and won the 2023 assembly polls.
The others convicted in the case have been identified as Rajesh Meena, Ravi Kirad, Wasim Khan, Dron Yadav, Bhanu Pratap Singh and Vidyadhar Meel.
Since the offence is bailable, all convicts have been released on bail immediately after the sentencing.

Congress candidate alleges police targeted supporter in Ludhiana ration distribution case

Ludhiana: High-voltage drama was witnessed in Jawahar Nagar area on Wednesday afternoon, as Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu had an altercation with the police when they tried to detain a Congress supporter from the area. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While the police claimed that they received a complaint against the man for threatening and slapping a man by accusing him of accepting ration from the opposition party ahead of polls, the Congress leader stated that the entire episode is available on Facebook Live, in which everyone could see that the Congress supporter was only capturing a video of a man taking two sacks of ration. The video also captured that the man parked his scooter easily on the side and left, saying 'meri video te na bana' (at least don't capture me in the video). Thereafter, the man walked away. Congress claimed that their supporter, Lakhan, called the police to act on the recovery of ration; however, they did not come there at that moment. Later, a police team, comprising Inspector Bikramjit Singh Ghuman, SHO at Division Number 5 police station, and in-charge Kochar Market police post Dharampal Chaudhary, reached the spot with other personnel and tried to detain Lakhan. Bharat Bhushan Ashu said, "Lakhan was live on his Facebook when cops broke open the glass door of his premises and dragged him outside. A local resident had taken two sacks of ration on his scooter, and Lakhan had only captured a video of the man. The man himself stopped his scooter on the side of the road and walked away. Lakhan, thereafter, informed the police and asked them to take action. However, the police did not come there at that moment. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Two hours later, the SHO and police post in-charge with the police force reached there to apprehend Lakhan." "Lakhan asked about the complaint the police received against him; however, the police broke open the lock of the door and dragged him out. Meanwhile, I reached there and protested, after which the police officers left from there. Moreover, on that spot, the cops were writing a complaint on a paper to justify their action. The police have become a puppet of the ruling govt and are trying their best to intimidate the Congress workers and supporters," he added. When contacted, a senior police official said the scooter-borne man gave a complaint to the police that Lakhan stopped him, intimidated him, and slapped him when he was taking his own ration home. Acting on the complaint, the police went there to apprehend Lakhan, who already had about four FIRs on him. As per the information shared by the police official, Lakhan was booked between 2017 to 2019 in two cases - one case of scuffle with snatching, and one case of theft. When contacted, police commissioner Swapan Sharma said, "The police are looking into the matter and will act as per the law." Ashu complains to ECI His complaint reads that on June 18, the Congress worker reported the illegal distribution of cash, liquor, and ration by workers of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Ludhiana West constituency. Upon reaching the spot, instead of apprehending those engaged in these illegal activities, the police, in a shocking and partisan action, raided the house of the Congress worker who exposed the crime. The police broke open the locks of his house without any warrant, thereby violating his fundamental rights and sending a clear message of intimidation to those opposing the ruling party's candidate. The complaint also said that this is not an isolated incident. We have ample evidence and information that AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora, his councillor, and party workers are openly engaging in the distribution of cash, liquor, and other inducements, fully protected by state security personnel. This has not only compromised the level playing field mandated during elections but has also created a climate of fear and suppression against the democratic process. Also, in the complaint, the Congress candidate demanded immediate transfer of all Station House Officers (SHOs) posted in Ludhiana West, as they are complicit in allowing these malpractices and targeting opposition workers. Further, they demanded the transfer of the DSP (West, Civil Lines), ADCP-III Kanwalpreet Singh, and DCP Ludhiana Parminder Singh Bhandal with immediate effect to ensure free and fair elections in the constituency and the registration of FIRs against Sanjeev Arora (AAP candidate), his councillor, and all workers involved in the distribution of cash and illegal inducements, under the relevant sections of the Representation of the People Act and IPC.

Retired IAF officer put under digital arrest, cheated of Rs 1 crore

Noida: A retired Indian Air Force officer in the city was allegedly cheated of over Rs 1 crore by cyber criminals who posed as officials from the telecom regulatory authority, Mumbai police and CBI to manipulate him into believing he was involved in a money laundering case. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In his complaint, filed with the police station on Monday, the former IAF officer said on May 17, he received a call from a person claiming to be an official from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The caller told him that his identity was linked to a financial crime flagged by the Union finance ministry. To put pressure on the complainant, the scammers connected him to men posing as police officers from Mumbai's Colaba police station via video call, where impersonators, some in uniform, confirmed fabricated charges. They sent forged documents bearing ministry letterheads and warned of immediate arrest and asset seizure. The fraudsters then placed the ex-serviceman under constant video surveillance, preventing him from contacting anyone. Under psychological duress, he was coerced into transferring over Rs 1 crore to multiple bank accounts across six transactions. On June 13, the victim realised the deception and approached the police. A case was registered under BNS sections 308(2) (extortion), 319(2) (cheating by personation), 318(4) (cheating), 336(3) (forgery) along with Section 66D of the IT Act. While no arrests have been made yet, cops said the investigation in the case was currently on. Over the last 17 months, police have recovered nearly Rs 53 crore stolen in various digital fraud cases. Since Jan 2024, they have also arrested 553 fraudsters, primarily from Delhi and UP. DCP (cyber) Preeti Yadav earlier told TOI that cops have been consistently recovering over Rs 3 crore monthly, working in close coordination with bank officials and other stakeholders. Of the total amount recovered, Rs 25 crore was retrieved through complaints filed on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, while Rs 27.9 crore was recovered through formal FIRs.

Gurgaon man loses Rs 54k after con poses as nephew, seeks money transfer

Gurgaon: A city resident lost Rs 54,000 in an online scam after accidentally disclosing his nephew's name during a WhatsApp call. The fraudster, posing as the nephew Golu Sharma, claimed that he was sending Rs 3.3 lakh via NEFT and requested the victim to transfer Rs 2 lakh to another person, citing an emergency. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The victim transferred Rs 54,000 before becoming suspicious and discovering the fraud after contacting his brother. According to the FIR filed at cyber police station, Manesar, the victim received a WhatsApp call on June 5 from an unknown international number starting with +44. The caller greeted him and addressed him as 'tau' (uncle). When the victim asked for the caller's identity, the latter said he was his foreign-returned son. The victim, making a guess, said, "Who? Golu?" "I took his name and that was my mistake," the victim told police, adding that he assumed that it was his nephew, who works in London and often calls him 'tau'. The scammer confirmed, said he was in an urgent need of money. He claimed that he was transferring Rs 3.3 lakh to the victim via NEFT and asked him to forward Rs 2 lakh to another contact who would call shortly. Soon after, the victim received a call from a different number. The caller said his mother was hospitalised and he needed money urgently. The victim then transferred Rs 50,000 to a Punjab National Bank account, followed by another Rs 4,000 to a Union Bank of India account. Only after both transactions were completed did he grow suspicious and call his brother to confirm if the first caller was Golu. After realising that he was conned, the victim reported the fraud to the cybercrime helpline 1930 and filed a complaint with cyber police station, Manesar. A case was registered under sections 318(4) (cheating) and 319 (impersonation) of BNS.
