Nine people killed after fire tears through care home
Nine people have died and at least 30 more injured after a huge fire at an assisted living facility.
Firefighters rushed to Gabriel House in Fall River, Massachusetts, shortly before 10pm local time on Sunday.
Several residents of the home were trapped inside the burning building until the fire was put out on Monday morning, allowing firefighters and police officers to get inside and rescue several people.
In horrifying scenes residents were 'hanging out the windows looking to be rescued', Chief Jeffrey Bacon said, while police officers tried to break windows and help them out.
A spokesperson for Fall River Police Department said: 'Without hesitation, officers entered the smoke-filled facility, breaking down doors and escorting residents to safety.
'Approximately a dozen non-ambulatory residents were physically carried out by our officers. Their bravery and quick action undoubtedly saved many lives.'
The house has about 70 occupants, and at least 30 of them were injured in the blaze.
The huge rescue effort involved 50 firefighters, 30 of whom were off duty at the time, and five firefighters also suffered injuries during the rescue operation.
Leo Johnson, 45, rushed over to find his 68-year-old mother, who lives on the top floor of Gabriel House.
He said 'I was kinda freaking out because she wasn't one of the ones outside,' but eventually found his mother outside, soaking wet because the sprinklers were on. More Trending
Joe Alves, who lives close to the facility, was watching TV when he heard the wave of sirens and fire crews.
He said he saw officials pulling bodies and injured pets out of the building, with some pouring water bottles on burns as they desperately tried to help those in need.
'There were people in wheelchairs, a lot of people missing limbs, it was terrible,' Joe added.
The cause of the fire is now under investigation.

Tech secretary suggests Nigel Farage is on side of Jimmy Savile over online law
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Science Secretary Peter Kyle has said Nigel Farage is on the side of modern-day equivalents of Jimmy Savile, over his opposition to the Online Safety Act. One of the most contentious parts of the law, introducing age verification to websites hosting porn and other 'adult content', came into effect on Friday. The changes have generated backlash from internet users, and Farage used a Reform UK press conference yesterday to pledge his party would repeal the act if elected to government. In an appearance on Sky News this morning, Kyle said the move would stop 'strange adults getting in touch with children'. He said: 'We have people out there who are extreme pornographers peddling hate, peddling violence. Nigel Farage is on their side. Make no mistake about it, if people like Jimmy Savile were alive today, he'd be perpetrating his crimes online, and Nigel Farage is saying he's on their side, not the side of children.' Craig Munro breaks down Westminster chaos into easy to follow insight, walking you through what the latest policies mean to you. Sent every Wednesday. Sign up here. Asked twice to clarify if he was claiming the Reform leader was on the side of Savile, one of the worst sexual predators in British history, the Science Secretary did not backtrack. Kyle added: 'Nigel Farage is on the side of turning the clock back to the time when strange adults, strangers can get in touch via messaging apps with children.' In a post on X following the broadcast, Farage called the minister's comments 'disgusting', writing: 'He should do the right thing and apologise.' Kyle responded by quoting the post and adding: 'If you want to overturn the Online Safety Act you are on the side of predators. It is as simple as that.' More Trending Speaking on Sky News later in the morning, former Reform chairman Zia Yusuf said the comments were 'one of the most outrageous and disgusting things a politician has said in the political arena that I can remember'. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video He continued: 'Levelling that allegation, talking about Jimmy Savile in that way, does nothing other than denigrate the victims of Jimmy Savile.' Yusuf previously suggested the Online Safety Act was turning the UK in a 'dystopian Chinese surveillance state'. A petition calling on the government to repeal the act has gathered more than 380,000 signatures online, meaning Parliament will consider it for a debate. British tourist dies after being found face down in hotel pool
A British tourist has died on holiday in Majorca after drowning in a hotel swimming pool. Paramedics rushed to a hotel in s'Illot, not far from the Love Island villa, shortly after 8.30am local time today. The name and exact location of the hotel has not yet been confirmed. Ambulances as well as an air ambulance were sent to the scene after the tourist, a 52-year-old man who has not yet been named, was found floating face down in the hotel's pool. Emergency medical organisation SAMU said: 'A British man aged 52 has been found floating face down in the swimming pool of a hotel in s'Illot. 'He was pulled out of the water and basic resuscitation manoeuvres were practiced on him until the first ambulances arrived when it was confirmed he had gone into cardiac arrest. More Trending 'Despite attempts to resuscitate him he died. The alarm was raised at 8.37am this morning.' The Civil Guard confirmed this morning officers were at the hotel and an investigation was underway.
