Why this Rams WR doesn't wear his Super Bowl ring

USA Today21-07-2025
The Los Angeles Rams won their first Super Bowl in more than two decades in 2021 thanks to a lot of different contributors. Matthew Stafford was obviously the biggest, but there were plenty of other players who earned a Super Bowl ring thanks to what they did both in the regular season and in the playoffs.
But one ex-Rams player doesn't like to wear his Super Bowl ring in the years following the victory. Former NFL receiver DeSean Jackson, who only played seven games for L.A. in 2021, said the ring the Rams game him is a "bittersweet situation," on a recent episode of "All Facts No Brakes with Keyshawn Johnson."
'It's a bittersweet situation," Jackson said. "I ain't even play in the game."
Early in the conversation, Jackson said Rams coach Sean McVay brought him to L.A. to fill the deep threat role vacated by Brandin Cooks. However, Jackson didn't see a lot of action during his seven games with the team. He only caught eight receptions for 221 yards and one touchdown on 15 targets.
Jackson and the Rams parted ways midway through the season and he finished the year with the Las Vegas Raiders. The team still gave Jackson a ring, though Jackson added that his contribution to the team won't be a defining element of his career because of it.
Jackson played 15 years in the league, mostly for the Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Commanders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He finished with 641 receptions for 11,263 yards and 58 touchdowns.

Lions and Chargers have high expectations as they open the NFL preseason in the Hall of Fame game

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — Fifteen wins. No. 1 seed. Super Bowl betting favorites. The Detroit Lions fell way short last season, going one-and-done in the playoffs after having the best regular season in franchise history. They still have a loaded roster stacked with talent and plenty of unfinished business. The Lions kick off their quest for their first Super Bowl title when they take on the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday night in the Hall of Fame game, which opens the NFL's preseason schedule. The Chargers are also coming off a season that ended with a loss in their playoff opener, a wild-card game against Houston. But it was a different vibe in Los Angeles where Jim Harbaugh came in and led a six-win improvement. Harbaugh, who led Michigan to a national championship before leaving for the NFL, guided the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl in his second season in 2012. Can he do it again with the Chargers? They haven't won any titles since capturing the 1963 AFL championship. Expectations are high for both teams but it's a long road to the Vince Lombardi trophy. It starts in the exhibition opener, two days ahead of the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony. 'It's a new season, it's a new beginning,' Lions coach Dan Campbell said as he enters his fifth season in charge. 'You understand what that road looks like and there's going to be nothing easy about it. But I think it's — every year you do this and you just realize, 'Hey man, just get in.' Win this division — that's always going to be the goal. Find a way to win your division because now you're automatically in and then once you're in, it's the matchup. And don't worry about the — OK, maybe we have to go on the road, so be it, or if something happens. 'You take your best unit, you put your best practice that you can together, find the guys that you're going to use to try to go win that game and then let it ride. No, I'm still as enthusiastic as ever. I know these guys are. There's a price to be paid to get yourself back into the dance, back into the tournament, and that will never change and if we let that slide at all, then we're going to be sitting here at home in January and that's not what we want.' Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery, Penei Sewell and the rest of Detroit's star-studded offense won't see any action against Los Angeles. Hendon Hooker and Kyle Allen will play quarterback for the Lions as they battle to be Jared Goff's backup. Justin Herbert and the Chargers' veterans also will watch from the sideline. Trey Lance will start at quarterback for Los Angeles. Lance, the 25-year-old third overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, is on his third team after stops in San Francisco and Dallas. 'He's had a heck of a camp,' Harbaugh said. 'I just want to get Trey Lance game experience. With his career and then in college, he doesn't have as much as most guys.' Rookie DJ Uiagalelei, who signed with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent, is scheduled to play the second half. Veteran Taylor Heinicke will serve as the emergency third quarterback. Rookie running back Omarion Hampton, selected by Los Angeles 22nd overall and wide receiver Tre Harris, a second-round pick, are expected to play. But Detroit's top two draft picks, defensive tackle Tyleik Williams and guard Tate Ratledge, aren't scheduled to play. The game features the debut of Detroit's two new coordinators. OC John Morton replaced Ben Johnson, who left to coach Chicago. DC Kelvin Sheppard took over for Aaron Glenn, who went to coach the New York Jets. 'I've said this before, it hurts to lose two guys that, man, have been here from the beginning, have a lot of trust and faith in,' Campbell said. 'There's a lot of communication that goes that's not even said because once you get to that, you understand each other. A look, a nod, body demeanor says it all. And that's just a little bit of what we have to gain together between myself, Johnny Morton and Shepp. But that takes a minute, it takes time. We'll get it, it'll come. That's what practice is about, that's what preseason games early in the year, all of that. We'll be good.' ___ AP NFL:

Where is UNC football projected to finish in ACC Preseason Poll?

How many victories will UNC grab in Bill Belichick's first season as head football coach? The UNC football program, just over a month from kicking off its highly-anticipated 2025 campaign, will attract plenty of attention this fall. North Carolina made an unexpected offseason hiring for its next head coach: 8-time Super Bowl Champion Bill Belichick. At first glance, this translates to instant success, but Belichick has never coached at the collegiate level before. The Tar Heels will have to prove themselves in live game action – and go up against a reloaded ACC when doing so. On Wednesday afternoon, the ACC released its 2025 Preseason Poll, with media picking UNC to finish eighth. North Carolina is a spot behind Florida State in the preseason poll, plus one spot ahead of Pitt. The Tar Heels won't match up with either the Seminoles or Panthers this fall, but split matchups with both opponents in 2024 (35-11 win at FSU, 34-24 loss vs. Pitt). Clemson is projected to win the ACC, which should come as a surprise to very few people. UNC hosts the Tigers on October 4, a game that will play a major role in shaping the future, 2025 trajectory of both teams. If we're deciding North Carolina's win total based on the ACC Preseason Polls alone, victories should pile up. The Tar Heels will travel to California on Oct. 17, host Virginia eight days later and travel to Syracuse on Halloween. UNC hosts Stanford on November 8, travels to Wake Forest on Nov. 15, hosts Duke Nov. 22 and travels to NC State over Thanksgiving weekend. Belichick is a coach who knows how to get the best out of his players. The hope in Chapel Hill is that North Carolina will win games it's expected to, while also delivering a few surprises. Shannon Sharpe out at ESPN after settling sexual misconduct lawsuit

ESPN football analyst Shannon Sharpe will not be returning to the cable sports network, a source familiar with the situation told NBC News on Wednesday. Sharpe, a Hall of Fame former player, settled a lawsuit earlier this month that accused him of sexual assault, according to the plaintiff's attorney. He had stepped aside from ESPN in April after a woman filed the lawsuit in Nevada. The suit accused him of raping the woman twice in Las Vegas in October and once more in January. A representative and an attorney for Sharpe did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Tony Buzbee, the woman's attorney, said in a July 18 statement that the civil suit was settled. 'Both sides acknowledge a long-term consensual and tumultuous relationship," Buzbee said. "After protracted and respectful negotiations, I'm pleased to announce that we have reached a mutually agreed upon resolution. All matters have now been addressed satisfactorily, and the matter is closed." In a statement after the suit was filed, an attorney for Sharpe said he and the woman had a relationship that was 'consensual and sexual in nature.' The attorney, Lanny Davis, said in April that the suit was 'filled with lies, distortions, and misrepresentations' and an 'attempt at blackmail.' After he stepped away, Sharpe, a former Denver Broncos tight end, vowed to be back on ESPN by the time pro football season started again. The first exhibition game is set for Thursday when the Los Angeles Rams and Detroit Lions play in the annual Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio. The regular season starts on Sept. 4 when the Dallas Cowboys pay a visit to the defending Super Bowl-champion Philadelphia Eagles.
