HBO Max is back: Warner Bros. Discovery to revert streaming service name
After just one year under the simplified moniker Max , Warner Bros. Discovery is reversing course and bringing back the HBO Max brand, the name the streaming platform launched with in 2020.
The rebrand, set to roll out this summer, was announced on Wednesday during the company's upfront presentation to advertisers in New York. Executives cited consumer sentiment, global momentum, and the enduring power of the HBO name as key drivers of the move.
'This evolution has also been influenced by changing consumer needs,' said JB Perrette, President and CEO of Global Streaming. 'No consumer today is saying they want more content — they want better content.'
The move appears to be an acknowledgment that the decision to drop 'HBO' in 2023 — in an effort to broaden the platform's appeal beyond prestige television — failed to resonate with audiences. While the rebrand was never directly labelled a misstep, Warner Bros. Discovery did refer to the reversal as a sign of its willingness to 'boldly iterate' based on viewer data and real-world response.
A brand built on prestige
HBO has long been synonymous with quality storytelling, with recent global hits like The White Lotus and The Last of Us reinforcing its brand cachet. The HBO Max name, according to executives, better reflects the platform's unique proposition: 'content that is recognised as unique and worth paying for,' said Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content.
In a candid interview, Perrette revealed that the decision to revert came after months of analysis and discussion with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. 'David said, 'The consumer always tells you whether you're right or wrong… Let's go back. That sounds like HBO,'' Perrette recounted.
New look, familiar feel
Subscribers may have already noticed early signs of the shift. The Max interface recently changed its colour scheme from blue to dark grey, echoing the original HBO Max aesthetic. The new logo will also revive the rounded letters first used in the 2020 branding.
Despite the challenges of integrating Discovery+ content and new subscription tiers for sport and news, the streaming platform has turned a profit. Projections estimate HBO Max could surpass 150 million subscribers by 2026.
Legacy meets strategy
Since the $43 billion Warner Media-Discovery merger in 2022, the company has sought to find its footing in an increasingly competitive streaming landscape. While the streamlined 'Max' aimed for breadth, its return to HBO Max reflects a renewed focus on depth — and distinction.
As Zaslav summed it up: 'Today, we are bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media, to further accelerate our growth in the years ahead.'

Maguire's suit carries a pre-sale estimate of between $100,000 and $200,000, while the batsuit could fetch up to $500,000. Chris Evans' Captain America shield in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) is also being sold, as is Ryan Reynolds' mask in Deadpool (2016) and Jane Fonda's Barbarella costume from the 1968 film. Elsewhere, Harrison Ford's eight-foot bullwhip, belt, and whip holster from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) are expected to fetch between $250,000 and $500,000. Props from a range of other popular films and TV shows also feature, including the flamethrower used by Sigourney Weaver's character Ellen Ripley in Aliens (1986), and the stunt Longclaw sword used by Kit Harington's Jon Snow in HBO series Game of Thrones. A number of props from the Harry Potter film series are also up for auction, including the Platform 9 ¾ sign, which could sell for up to $40,000, and Daniel Radcliffe's wand as Harry Potter from the scenes in The Prisoner of Azkaban when he is seen opening the Marauder's Map. The Star Wars lightsaber went on display as part of a private exhibition at The Dorchester in London on Wednesday ahead of Propstore's auction in Los Angeles, taking place between 4 and 6 September. —PA Media/dpa

Boeing workers who make fighter jets go on strike
About 3,200 machinists who build Boeing fighter jets in the St. Louis area walked off the job Monday, after their union failed to reach an agreement with the aircraft manufacturer. The strike, which the union said began at midnight, was the first in nearly three decades for the local chapter of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, IAM District 837. In announcing the strike, the union rejected the increase to wages and retirement contributions that the company was offering. When the union last went on strike, in 1996, the work stoppage lasted 99 days. 'IAM District 837 members have spoken loud and clear, they deserve a contract that reflects their skill, dedication, and the critical role they play in our nation's defense,' Tom Boelling, the top official at the union's St. Louis chapter, said in a statement. Last week, Boeing reported $22.7 billion in revenue for its latest financial quarter, the company's largest quarterly revenue figure in six years. But the strike could put added pressure on the company, which generates about 30% of its revenue from its defense and space division. Even with its impressive revenue haul, Boeing reported a loss of $612 million in the quarter, as it continues to battle back from a series of damaging incidents over the last several years. Last year, Boeing faced a crisis when a poorly installed panel blew off a Boeing 737 Max jet during a flight. And the Max was involved in two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019. 'We're disappointed our employees rejected an offer that featured 40% average wage growth and resolved their primary issue on alternative work schedules,' Dan Gillian, vice president of Boeing Air Dominance and general manager and senior executive at the St. Louis site, said in an emailed statement. Gillian said Boeing had prepared for the work stoppage and 'has fully implemented our contingency plan to ensure our nonstriking work force can continue supporting our customers.' Members of the St. Louis local help build fighter aircraft such as the F-15 and the T-7 training jet while also manufacturing components for Boeing's 777X commercial jets. Last year, a two-month strike brought production of the Max to a near standstill. But that strike involved 30,000 employees, significantly more than the number threatening to strike in St. Louis. Harry Potter series to debut in 2027
Filming has begun on a Harry Potter TV series that will debut in 2027, bringing the Hollywood hit to the small screen for the first time. Adapted from the wildly popular books, which have also yielded blockbuster films and stage shows, the latest outing for the boy who lived is being filmed at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, Britain, the studio said Monday. While no exact release date has been confirmed, the show will be available on the HBO Max streaming platform. The franchise sees the eponymous Potter plucked from non-magical obscurity and thrust into a wizarding world in which he and his close friends Ron and Hermione battle against the forces of darkness. With the mega-selling books' author JK Rowling among its executive producers, the show is envisaged as "a decade-long series" featuring a new cast from the films. Potter will be played by Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton will star as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will take on the role of Ron Weasley. Established stars will appear alongside them, with John Lithgow playing headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Rowling has faced accusations of transphobia in recent years for placing an emphasis on biological sex over gender identity in comments about trans women. She denies the accusation. —AFP
