Perthshire woman who lost two stones and 12 lbs is Crieff Slimmer of the Year
A Perthshire woman who transformed her life by losing almost three stones has been named Crieff Slimming World Woman of the Year 2025.
Morag MacKenzie, who attends the Crieff Tuesday evening Slimming World group, was voted by fellow members to win the accolade after losing two stones and 12lbs.
Morag decided to join Slimming World after a devastating run of family bereavements left her in despair.
She turned to food for comfort and soon found her weight rising and her confidence at an all time low.
After receiving counselling she decided it was time to start making herself a priority and took the step to join her local Slimming World group.
Since joining, she has lost almost three stone and her life has completely changed. She feels healthier, happier, fitter and slimmer. She is particularly proud to be able to run around after her grandkids more easily and enjoy being active with them.
Morag said: 'I'm a real food lover, so when my consultant explained the plan to me and said I could still eat real food without having to restrict myself, I knew I was in the right place.
'I couldn't believe it when the weight started falling off. I hadn't been hungry once.'
Morag was joined by two other members as part of the group's competition finals, Donna Mackay and Gwen Barrowman, also nominated by their peers for their inspirational weight losses and life-changing transformations.
Donna has lost six stones with the support of Slimming World and shared that losing weight has helped alleviate her fibromyalgia symptoms.
Donna said: 'I knew I wanted to start exercising and when my consultant spoke about all of the benefits activity would bring, such as feeling stronger and improving my mental health, as well as helping to maintain my weight loss, it was just the motivation I needed.
'I didn't want to have to hit the gym every day or start running marathons though – at least not at first – so I started with walking more and then built up gradually.
'Now I'm always on the go, and with my boys we've become an 'adventure family', enjoying active days out together and eating healthy meals on the go.'
Gwen lost five stones 9.5lb. She said: 'I'm a qualified nutritionist, so I understood the principles of healthy eating, but after caring for my father I had turned to comfort and convenience with my food.
'My sister had joined Slimming World in Dundee, and we decided to walk the journey together. I looked up my local group and went along to find out more – soon realising there was more to the support than just the healthy eating plan.
'The group has helped me with mindset, long-term behaviour change and I have been blown away by what I've achieved in such a short time. 'With only a few pounds to go until I reach my dream target weight, I'm confident that with the strategies I've learned along the way, and the things I've learned about myself as a slimmer.'
The Crieff Slimming World groups are held every Tuesday at 5.30pm, and every Wednesday at 9.30am in the Strathearn Community Campus.

Mum's stunning transformation as she loses half her bodyweight without fat jabs
Kim Mattinson, from Cockermouth, Cumbria, lived with the "daily threat of heart failure" when she weighed her heaviest - 20 stone - and she decided to fight the flab A mum lost half her bodyweight when her 20-stone frame "almost killed" her. Kim Mattinson, 43, was determined to tackle her weight as, at her heaviest, she lived with the "daily threat of heart failure". Yet, the the mother of four chose against using fat jabs - and instead overhauled her diet - to become healthier and see a brighter future. Things looked bleak for Kim in April 2022 when she experienced the symptoms of a heart attack, including a severe pain in her chest, and she was rushed to hospital. Doctors diagnosed her with fatty liver and acute asthma, a moment Kim now regards as "a wake-up call". Kim's story mirrors that of Josh Hilton, a hairdresser from Wiltshire, who lost 10 stone in one year without going to the gym or taking fat jabs. And, like Josh, Kim sees jabs - like those by Ozempic and Mounjaro - as "quick fixes". Some of these brands, such as Ozempic, are also not designed to be used as weight loss treatments. Kim said: "I see weight loss jabs as a quick fix, I wanted a lasting change. I love food and I didn't want to have a toxic relationship with it, so I stayed away." The single mum, of Cockermouth, Cumbria, was only 40 when she experienced the "fake" heart attack episode at home. Recalling this, she said: "The day I had the fake heart attack I thought I was going to die. The feeling of thinking these are your last moments was horrific. "All I could see was my kids and how I wasn't going to be there for them. Now if anything looking back I'm happy it happened as it forced me to get a move on and change my life." So, Kim joined her local Slimming World group, began exercising, beginning with walking 10,000 steps before starting at her local gym and changed her diet. In the three years since April 2022 when she weighed 20 stone, Kim lost some 10 stone. Speaking today, the holiday cottage management business owner said: "I no longer have to make excuses to do anything, it is yes to everything. My life has done a complete 180 - now we can do whatever we want a family be it swimming, cycling, walking. "I no longer have to go online to check for weight restrictions. It is also the small things of I remember the first time I could see my feet again or I can now have a bath instead of a shower. "Losing weight saved my life. It gave me back everything I thought I'd lost and so much more. I couldn't afford not to be here for my kids - they needed me, and I needed to be around fully present for them." Kim compared the difficulties of parenting at her heaviest to now and in recent years as her weight has started to drop. She said: "I had to make excuses for why I couldn't be there for my own children. I has terribly sore feet and I couldn't walk for more than 100 metres meaning as a family we were missing out on a lot of things as I just couldn't physically do it." But now the Cumbria mum and her kids, whose ages now range from 11 to 21, enjoy a variety of sports and activities together, including swimming and hiking.

Matthew Baird, 34, was chosen out of thousands of men who attend Slimming World groups across the UK and Ireland to attend the semi-finals of Slimming World's 2025 Man of the Year competition. He was joined by 41 other inspiring men at the organisation's head office in Derbyshire – and says the whole experience was 'unforgettable.' Matthew, who slimmed from 19st 4.5lbs to 14st 2lbs, says: 'I'd been unhappy with my weight for a while but didn't really know what to do about it. I found my local Slimming World group after my doctor referred me to them through the NHS Weight Management Service. I didn't know what to expect, but I was welcomed with open arms and no judgment, just support. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad "I soon realised I wasn't alone. Everyone there understood exactly how I felt, and the group quickly became my weekly reset. Together we talk and plan for the week ahead and how to navigate situations that may send us off track, and that's been key to keeping me motivated. Even on weeks I've not felt like it, the group has been there to get me going again. Matthew slimmed from 19st 4.5lbs to 14st 2lbs, earning a place in the semi-finals of a national Slimming World competition. "I love that I can still eat all my favourite meals like chicken katsu curry, prawn and mango stir fry and beef stroganoff too, and I don't feel like I'm restricting myself.' Thanks to Slimming World's Food Optimising plan, Matthew found the weight steadily came off. He began to feel more energetic and when his Consultant started to talk about Slimming World's physical activity support programme, Matthew liked the sound of that too. He says: 'My Consultant Kellie talked about all the benefits of moving more and despite never thinking I'd enjoy exercise, I decided to give it a go. I started swimming and gradually built it up to where I can now swim 40 lengths and love going three times a week. Now I also do weight training and have just started a couch to 5K programme. I've learnt that keeping the weight off long-term isn't just about what you eat, it's about being active too and now I really look forward to getting out and moving my body.' He says: 'My group gave me the confidence to know I could reach my target, they helped me to start to believe in myself and my ability to lose weight right from my very first group, and being here today 5st lighter is unreal. Matthew Baird, 34, lost an incredible 5st 2.5lbs with Slimming World. "On top of that, being at the semi-finals of the Man of the Year competition, surrounded by people who've changed their lives like I have and then meeting Paul Merson has been unforgettable. We had a chat about my journey and the changes I had made, and he was so down-to-earth.' Former England and Arsenal star Paul Merson, who's spoken openly in the media about his own health struggles, said he was blown away by Matthew's achievement: 'What Matthew's done is nothing short of incredible. Losing that amount of weight takes real commitment. But what impressed me even more is how happy and confident he is now. He's clearly made changes he can stick to for life – and that's what it's all about.' Matthew's Slimming World Consultant, Kellie Eadie, who runs the Milngavie group, says: 'We're all so proud of Matthew. He's proof that when you've got the right tools, the right food, and the right people around you, anything is possible. Slimming World isn't about going it alone; we support people no matter their starting point – including those taking weight-loss medication. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad "We understand that starting any weight loss journey takes courage and there's no judgement for anybody taking weight loss injections. It's essential though that anyone losing weight creates healthy habits so that they can maintain their any weight loss in the long term though – and that's where Slimming World comes in. We support our members to build a healthy, balanced lifestyle around real food, activity and support – things that work in the long run.' Now, with a new lease of life and renewed energy Matthew says he's looking forward to the future. He says: 'I've got my life back. I've got energy, confidence, and a future I'm excited about. If there's someone reading this who feels like I used to, I'd just say, give it a go, it's been life-changing for me.' The Milngavie group, led by Kellie, meets every Wednesday at 5:30pm at Corbie Hall.
