S'gor govt-owned firm racks up over 22,000 unpaid traffic summonses

PUTRAJAYA : KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd, a company wholly-owned by the Selangor government, has racked up 22,017 unpaid traffic summonses, says transport minister Loke Siew Fook.
Loke said KDEB was among 11 companies listed as having more than 1,000 outstanding traffic summonses, while 17 express bus firms have more than 200.
Among bus companies, Cepat Ekspres Sdn Bhd has the most traffic summonses with 540.
The minister said these summonses involved various serious road safety offences, including overloading, exceeding the speed limit, and failing to possess a valid driver's licence and vehicle road tax.
The companies have been given two weeks from today to pay off the summonses.
'Failure to do so will be followed by stern enforcement action, including immediately blacklisting the vehicles involved.
'The ministry and road transport department (JPJ) will not tolerate those who fail to obey the law,' he said at a press conference here.
FMT has reached out to KDEB for comment.
Loke maintained that companies operating heavy vehicles must not take road safety lightly, citing the fatal Gerik bus crash that killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris students earlier this month.
He also warned that the ministry would publicly name companies found negligent when it comes to road safety.
He also urged members of the public to continue sharing videos of traffic offences involving heavy vehicles so that the necessary action can be taken.

MACC remands NGO chief over alleged money laundering, misuse of charity funds
PUTRAJAYA, June 25 (Bernama) — A chairman of a non-governmental organisation (NGO) has been remanded on suspicion of involvement in money laundering and using proceeds of corruption through personal accounts, his company, and those of relatives and associates. According to a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) source, the male suspect in his 30s was arrested at around 2.30pm yesterday while giving a statement at the MACC headquarters here. 'The suspect is believed to have committed the acts between 2015 and 2025, and previously the suspect had been remanded for a case investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009 related to abuse of power and misappropriation of NGO funds at the suspect's workplace,' said the source. Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin granted a four-day remand, until this Saturday, after an application was made by the MACC at the Magistrate's Court here today. Meanwhile, MACC Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Division director Norhaizam Muhammad, when contacted, confirmed the arrest. He said the case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA 2001).

Court rejects man's guilty plea in Penang police assault case over failure to recognise photos
GEORGE TOWN, June 25 — An assistant lorry driver who admitted to injuring a police officer had his guilty plea rejected by the Magistrate's Court here today after he failed to identify photographic evidence presented in the case. Magistrate Siti Nurul Suhaila Baharin declined to accept the plea from S R Aingaran, 19, citing the accused's inability to recognise photos related to the incident, which formed part of the case facts. The accused was charged with voluntarily causing hurt to a policeman on duty at the guard post of the Penang police contingent headquarters at 9.40pm on June 22. The charge was framed under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to one year, or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction. According to the facts of the case, two men were detained by the policeman at the guard post for behaving suspiciously. During a further check, one of them was found to be under the influence of alcohol and was brought inside for further inspection. It was at this point that the accused allegedly acted aggressively, punching the officer in the face and biting his chest, causing swelling and bruising. Following the court's decision to reject the plea, Deputy Public Prosecutor Lau Shavin offered bail at RM5,000 with one surety. However, Aingaran's lawyer, S Bommy from the National Legal Aid Foundation, appealed for a lower amount, citing his client's young age, his single status and his monthly income of just RM1,800 as an assistant lorry driver. Siti Nurul Suhaila allowed bail at RM3,000 with one surety and imposed an additional condition barring the accused from contacting the victim or the victim's family. The court set July 21 for case mention, pending document submission and counsel appointment. — Bernama
