Rs25,567Cr Mobility Plan To Ease Nagpur Gridlock
The latest and most detailed version of the plan was presented on Sunday to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union minister Nitin Gadkari, Nagpur guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, and representatives from 16 departments during the third and concluding stakeholder meeting.
Officials from Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), MahaMetro, Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT), traffic police, and the district collectorate were present at the meeting held at Metro Bhawan.
The CMP, jointly prepared by MahaMetro and RITES, aims to streamline mobility, reduce congestion, and build long-term transport infrastructure for the region, which spans 3,780 sq. km and has a population of over 43.7 lakh. The final version of the plan reflects a significant budget hike of nearly ₹7,000 crore compared to the previous draft, indicating the inclusion of several new infrastructure components and upgrades pegged at ₹18,585 crore.

Divided into three phases, the CMP allocates ₹13,927 crore for Phase 1, ₹10,774 crore for Phase 2, and ₹865 crore for Phase 3. A major addition in the latest draft is the proposed 148-km six-lane peripheral ring road, estimated at ₹3,700 crore. This key project, forming part of Phase 2, will act as a regional bypass connecting major highways including NH-44, NH-47, NH-353, NH-53, and the Samruddhi Mahamarg, thereby diverting heavy traffic away from the city core.
"Urbanisation is increasing rapidly, especially in areas like the Mihan and Koradi-Kamptee belt. The road and transport infrastructure must be upgraded accordingly. All agencies must act swiftly on the final plan," said Gadkari.
The plan focuses heavily on five core areas — non-motorised transport (NMT) facilities, mobility management, public transport, freight infrastructure, and road upgrades. These areas encompass 20 specific sectors, such as electric buses, intelligent traffic systems, flyovers, underpasses, off-street parking, and pedestrian-friendly pathways.
The CMP also proposes restrictions on the movement of long-distance commercial vehicles within city limits from 7am to 9pm, relocation of godowns from the core city area, and promotion of smaller, low-emission cargo vehicles in inner zones. Four freight terminals are planned: Automotive Chowk and Kapsi in Phase 1, Gumgaon in Phase 2, and Gondkhairi in Phase 3 — each estimated at ₹20 crore.
"To shape the growing expansion of the Nagpur metropolis, we will implement the mobility plan in three phases.
I appeal to citizens and public representatives to share their suggestions, so the plan becomes more people-oriented," Fadnavis said during the meeting.
Officials confirmed that a 15-day window has been opened for final suggestions or modifications from participating departments. The DPR, once ready, will be submitted to the state and then to the central government for final approval, after which it will be implemented on the ground.
The first mobility plan for Nagpur city was prepared in 2013 by the Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT). It was revised by MahaMetro in July 2018 and updated again with wider inputs through meetings chaired by the divisional commissioner.

Google has a solution to AI's power problem
Google has announced that it is leveraging its artificial intelligence (AI) technology to help stabilise and modernise power grids. The company announced new agreements with Indiana Michigan Power (I&M) and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to integrate 'demand response' capabilities into its data centres , a strategy aimed at flexibly managing energy consumption. Google says that demand response allows large energy users, such as data centres, to reduce or shift their power usage during peak hours or when the grid is under stress. It explained that this not only enables faster interconnection of new data centres but also reduces the need for new power plants and transmission lines, helping grid operators manage the system more efficiently. Why this announcement is 'important' Flexible demand is a key component of Google's ambition to run its operations on 24/7 carbon-free energy . The company noted that this solution can be deployed quickly, helping to bridge the gap between short-term load growth driven by AI and long-term clean energy solutions. This marks the first time Google is specifically applying these demand response capabilities to machine learning (ML) workloads. This approach builds on a successful demonstration last year with the Omaha Public Power District (OPPD), where the company reduced power demand from ML workloads during three separate grid events. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Option Trading Mastery: Mr. Gopal Shares His Laxman Rekha Strategy For Free TradeWise Learn More Undo Previously, Google's demand response efforts focused on shifting non-urgent tasks, such as processing YouTube videos. India to build fleet for fishing in deep seas dominated by China
India is finalizing plans to develop a modern deep‑sea fishing fleet to serve twin objectives: expanding the area for boats to find catch by more than threefold, and also curbing illegal and unregulated fishing, according to an official from fishery ministry who wish not to be quoted. The ministry will release a framework to sustainably harness fish from the country's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and the high seas, stretching up to 200 nautical miles from the coast, the official said. At present, most Indian fishing activity is concentrated within 40–60 nautical miles, leaving nearly two‑thirds of the zone untapped. India is the largest fish-producing country after China, with about 8% share in the global output. The country saw a record production of 18.402 million tonnes in 2023-24. India is also one of the top seafood producers and exporting nations, with a total export value of ₹60,524 crore in FY24. Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, every country has equal rights to fish in the high seas. India also aims to tap these resources to boost its exports with better returns, said the ministry official. China's deep-sea fishing operations are among the largest in the world. Its fleet operates in international waters and the EEZs of developing nations, catching millions of tonnes of fish annually, which not only supports its seafood export industry but also helps meet its domestic demand. However, some of the Chinese vessels are reportedly equipped with advanced surveillance and communication equipment, raising suspicions about their use in intelligence gathering. The official quoted earlier said India's proposed framework would provide guidelines for fishing activities in deep-sea areas and support fishing vessels with new indigenous technology. Indian operators shall be permitted to operate fishing vessels in the high seas under charter, lease, or joint venture arrangements, subject to compliance, according the official. An email sent to the ministry of fisheries on 1 August remained unanswered. 'Our fishermen are going only up to 12 nautical miles territorial waters and a little bitfurther. To go beyond, we need to have a bigger vessel with storage facilities, as you need tonnes of storage. So the need of the hour is big fishing vessels also with the required technology," said M. Ravichandran, secretary, ministry of earth sciences. In the Union Budget 2025-26, Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman mentioned that to unlock the untapped potential of the marine sector, the government will bring in an enabling framework for sustainable harnessing of fisheries from Indian exclusive economic zone and high seas, with special focus on the Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep Islands. "...the framework will offer larger avenues and good sources of fish to fishermen and the exporters," said K.N. Raghavan, secretary general, Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI). 'Countries like China, the US and Taiwan have already ventured into deep-sea fishing and are making fortunes." However, according to Raghavan, since deep-sea fishing involves large vessels, the concerns of small fishermen should be addressed. "There has been a lot of anxiety among fishermen that once deep-sea fishing starts, their interests will be jeopardized," he said. 'So the need of the hour is to educate them and their concerns should be addressed."
