Mumbai Police detain MNS workers protesting over language row

India Gazette08-07-2025
Thane (Maharashtra) [India], July 8 (ANI): Mumbai Police on Tuesday detained several Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers who were protesting against traders for allegedly not speaking Marathi.
The protest was part of a larger controversy surrounding the use of language in the city. MNS workers had gathered in the Mira-Bhayandar area to protest against traders who they claimed were not speaking Marathi.
The police had earlier denied permission for the rally, citing intelligence inputs and potential law and order issues. Despite this, the MNS workers went ahead with their protest, leading to their detention by the police.
Mira-Bhayander, Vasai-Virar Police Commissioner Madhukar Pandey stated that the police had detained some people and appealed to the city's residents to cooperate with the police. The police had suggested an alternative route for the rally, which the MNS workers had refused to accept.
'Based on the High Court's instructions, we stated that you can take permission to hold rally, but change the route. We also had some intelligence inputs, based on which we made this decision. We have detained some people, and I appeal to the city's residents to cooperate with the police,' Pandey told ANI.
The controversy began when some traders in Mumbai were allegedly attacked by MNS workers for not speaking Marathi. The MNS had been demanding that traders and shopkeepers in the city speak Marathi, leading to tensions between the two groups. The police have been working to maintain law and order in the city and prevent any further escalation of the situation.
The MNS has been advocating for the use of Marathi in public places and has been critical of those who do not speak the language. The party's chief, Raj Thackeray, has been vocal about the need for people to learn and speak Marathi, especially in Maharashtra.
MNS workers protested in the Mira Bhayandar area at Mira road in Thane earlier today, protesting the now rolled back order of the Maharashtra government mandating Hindi language to be taught in primary schools.
MNS leader Avinash Jhadav was also detained by the police for protesting at Mira Road.
Notably, Maharashtra Minister Pratap Baburao Sarnaik broke ranks with his government and came to Mira Bhayandar to support the MNS protest against traders over the language row.
But instead of a warm welcome, MNS workers called him a traitor and forced the minister to leave the spot. The minister had no choice but to leave as the crowd grew agitated.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the administration asked them to take an alternate route, to which they did not agree.
Speaking to reporters outside the Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis said, 'It would be wrong to say that we did not permit the protest at Mira Road. I have spoken to the commissioner, who told me that the Police did not refuse permission for the protest.' (ANI)

‘Sudarshan Chakra, You Mean?': Russian Envoy's Hindi Twist On S-400 Question Stuns Everyone

New Delhi: A press briefing at the Russian Embassy turned lively on Wednesday (August 20) when Roman Babushkin, Charge d'Affairs of Moscow to New Delhi, chose a uniquely Indian term for Russia's most advanced air defence system. The question came from a journalist on whether India might consider air defence systems like Israel's Iron Dome. Babushkin smiled, leaned forward and asked in return, 'You mean Sudarshan Chakra?' He did not stop there. With an amused expression, he added, 'Next time ask in Hindi, I can answer better!' India has already purchased the S-400 missile system from Russia. In Indian defence circles, the system carries the tag of 'Sudarshan Chakra'. It came into the spotlight during the four-day clash with Pakistan in May, when the system intercepted enemy missiles and proved its battlefield effectiveness. The comment arrives at a time when the term Sudarshan Chakra has been freshly associated with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day speech. He spoke about Mission Sudarshan Chakra, an ambitious national project to build a homegrown air defence shield. The goal is to protect both civilian centres and strategic assets from aerial threats. Babushkin opened the briefing with a warm gesture toward his hosts. In clear Hindi, he declared, 'Shuruat karengey… Shree Ganesh Karengey!' The hall responded with laughter and applause. Throughout the interaction, the deputy chief of mission spoke warmly about India-Russia relations. He also turned sharply critical of American trade policy. Tariffs on India from Washington, he said, show 'a lack of trust and disrespect for national sovereignty'. He stressed that Moscow will remain open for Indian goods. If tariffs in the United States create obstacles, he said, Russia would 'welcome' Indian exports.

Delhi Confidential: First-hand Learning

Even Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has first-hand experience of traffic logjam on the Manesar route. At The Energy and Research Institute's (TERI) 24th Darbari Seth Memorial Lecture on Wednesday, Gadkari said he was once stuck for three hours on his way to Manesar to attend a wedding. Gadkari jokingly said that he swore that day not to take the route again. He also recounted that when he was new to Delhi, he would often get stuck in traffic at Dhaula Kuan near the airport, and after becoming a minister, he had to put in a lot of effort to decongest traffic at the spot. Deputy head of Russia's Mission in India, Roman Babushkin, on Wednesday began his 90-minute-long media interaction in New Delhi with 'shuruaat karenge', quickly adding 'Shree Ganesh karenge'. On being asked about Russia's support to India's air defence system, he said 'you mean Sudarshan Chakra' as declared by PM Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech. 'Next time, ask in Hindi, I can answer better,' he told the mediapersons. Amid the uproar over the Constitution amendment Bills tabled in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, the internal dynamics of the TMC were also on display. The party was the first to storm the well of the House when Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the Bill. TMC member Kalyan Banerjee rallied the party's MPs on to the Opposition side of the well. TMC MP Mahua Moitra and a few party MPs entered the well on the Treasury side. A few minutes later, Banerjee, too, came to the Treasury side and it was at this moment that papers were thrown at Shah by some women MPs, leading to a near scuffle between TMC and BJP MPs. Not long ago, a war of words between Moitra and Banerjee had ended up with TMC chief Mamata Banerjee replacing the party's leader in the House and also its chief whip.

CM to continue public hearings, says cowardly attack can't break her spirit

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday said the assault on her by a 41-year-old man was a 'cowardly attempt' that can never shake her spirit to serve the people and vowed to continue her public hearings with greater energy and dedication. The incident occurred when the attacker, identified as Rajesh Bhai Kimji Bhai Sakariya from Rajkot, Gujarat, allegedly entered the CM's Civil Lines office during a public hearing under the guise of a complainant. According to the police, he approached Ms. Gupta with some papers and attempted to heckle her. The CM's security personnel then intervened and apprehended him. 'The attack on me during the Jan Sunwayi (public hearing) today morning is not only an attack on me but also a cowardly attack on our resolve to serve Delhi and the public good,' Ms. Gupta said in a post on X in Hindi. 'Such attacks can never break my spirit and resolve to serve the public. Now, I will be among you with more energy and dedication than ever before. Jan Sunwayi and resolving public problems will continue with the same seriousness and commitment as before,' she said. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Raja Banthia confirmed that the accused has been taken him into police custody and an FIR has been registered at the Civil Lines police station under Sections 109(1) (attempt to murder), 132 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of duty), and 221 (obstructing a public servant) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. 'We are probing the case from all possible angles,' he said. 'Fabricated reports' Police said a day before the assault, the accused had been caught on CCTV at the CM's Shalimar Bagh residence, allegedly recording videos of the premises and the CCTV cameras. The incident drew sharp political reactions. Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh called it a 'direct assault on democratic values'. Though sources in the Delhi BJP initially said Ms. Gupta was 'slapped' by the accused, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva later told mediapersons that reports of her being slapped and a stone being thrown at her were 'fabricated'. Mr. Sachdeva said there was jostling, during which the CM suffered a light blow to her head. However, Mr. Banthia did not clarify the extent of the attack or injuries to the Chief Minister in response to The Hindu's queries. (With inputs from Abhinay Deshpande)
