Controversial posters by city traffic police on women safety spark outrage in Ahmedabad
The campaign, meant to promote safety, is now being condemned for promoting fear and exposing deeper anxieties about women's security in Gujarat.
The posters, plastered across road dividers in Sola and Chandlodia areas, carried chilling messages: 'Do not attend late-night parties, you could be raped or gangraped,' and 'Do not go with your friend to dark, isolated areas, what if she is raped or gangraped?'
These provocative warnings were swiftly removed following public backlash, but not before igniting a storm over the state government's role and priorities.
As outrage grew, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic East) Safin Hasan distanced the department from the controversy. He clarified that the traffic police had only authorised posters promoting road safety, not ones addressing women's safety in such a disturbing tone. 'Permission was granted to a vigilance group for traffic awareness only,' he said.
'Once we found that certain posters implied women were unsafe in Ahmedabad, they were removed immediately. A formal complaint has been filed at Sola Police Station, and an investigation is underway to identify who was responsible," DCP said.
Hasan further stated that Ahmedabad remains one of the safest cities for women according to a recent Women's Safety Survey.

Goods vehicles on the Yamuna Expressway or coming from Pari Chowk will also be diverted through Kasna and Sirsa before joining the peripheral expressway. 'The traffic restrictions are being implemented to ensure smooth movement and security during the Independence Day celebration. Restrictions have been imposed to prevent congestion on key approach roads and maintain a secure environment around the event venues. By diverting commercial traffic through the Noida–Greater Noida Expressway and Eastern Peripheral Expressway from all major entry points, we aim to keep Delhi's borders clear for security checks, emergency movement, and public convenience,' added DCP. Traffic police have urged drivers and transport companies to plan routes in advance to avoid long detours and congestion on diversion routes. 8 dead, 29 injured as pick-up van falls into gorge in Maharashtra's Khed
Pune: Eight people died and 29 others sustained injuries after a pick-up van they were travelling in plunged 25 to 30 feet into a gorge near Kundeshwar Temple in Papalwadi village in Khed. Suspect in double murder case commits suicide in Satna hotel
Kanpur: A suspect in the murder of transgender Kajal (25) and her minor cousin brother took his own life at a hotel in Satna district, Madhya Pradesh on Monday, said deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Deependra Nath Chaudhary. The police s found a suicide note, the DCP said. The Satna police identified the deceased as Akash Vishwakarma (30), a resident of A Block Barra Vishwa Bank Colony, Kanpur. Kajal's mother, Guddi, named Akash in a complaint filed at Kanpur's Hanumant Vihar police station, also accusing two of Kajal's acquaintances, Alok alias Golu and Hemraj alias Ajay, of the murder. The DCP stated that the incident came to light following an alert from MP's Satna police on Monday. "They informed us that in the Kolgawan police station area of Satna, a man named Akash Vishwakarma committed suicide by hanging himself in Hotel Siddhant. The Satna police found a suicide note with Akash, in which he admitted to killing transgender Kajal and her 12-year-old brother in Kanpur and expressed his wish to die willingly," the DCP added. Police said that the incident happened on Monday afternoon when Akash's body was discovered hanging from the fan in room number 27 of the hotel. He used torn curtains to hang himself. Akash booked the room on Saturday and, after checking out on Sunday, returned and stayed in the same room after missing his train. The cleaning staff noticed no activity on Monday, prompting the hotel staff to alert the police. Kolgawan police station in-charge Sudeep Soni arrived at the scene, carried out the necessary procedures, and sent the body for an autopsy. The family was informed based on the identification card. Meanwhile, the police investigation in Kanpur revealed that Kajal did not like being referred to as transgender. She underwent facial surgery at a hospital in Mumbai to appear as a girl, spending over three lakh rupees on the procedure. Police sources also said that they are now focusing on two other alleged acquaintances of transgender Kajal, Golu alias Alok and Hemraj alias Ajay named in the FIR. "It also emerged that Kajal, along with Akash, paid Rs 5 lakh in advance to someone for purchasing land in Kanpur," police sources added.
