‘They were trying to kill my family': Body camera footage released of teen accused of shooting Cal City officer
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The call came in around 4 p.m. A woman, speaking rapidly, reported a girl walking in California City fired a shot at a white van. 'She just shot a gun,' the caller says in a video released on YouTube Thursday by sheriff's investigators. 'She just put it in her pocket.' Minutes later, an officer found the girl walking on Hickory Avenue. The encounter left both suffering from gunshot wounds. As other officers took her into custody, the girl, Annette Garcia, said she and her family were in danger. 'I was just trying to help my family,' she says. 'They were trying to kill my family.' Garcia, 17 at the time of the April 21 shooting, recovered from her injuries and has undergone a mental competency examination. She's due in juvenile court next week for a hearing at which the results will be discussed. She's charged with two counts of attempted murder, assault with a gun on a peace officer, shooting at an occupied motor vehicle, attempted murder of a public official, carrying a loaded gun, possession of live ammunition by a minor, carrying a dirk or dagger and resisting arrest. A prosecutor has said Garcia had access to unsecured guns in her mother's home. The wounded officer, Michael Kelakios, had a bullet removed from his leg, sheriff's officials said. He fired at Garcia after she turned and shot him the moment he got out of his patrol vehicle, according to police. An incident review board on June 5 found he acted within department policy. The video released Thursday contains audio of a 911 call, body camera video of the wounded officer and Garcia's arrest, and photos of the damaged van and the weapons — a handgun and knife — officials said Garcia was carrying. The round fired at the van passed through what appears to be its left side and hit a package inside. That shooting occurred in the area of Corwin Street and Lime Avenue. No one was injured, although the woman on the 911 call was obviously shaken up. 'Let's get in the house before she shoots again,' the woman says to someone, possibly her son, whom she later mentions. 'Dude, I don't want to die.' About nine minutes later, Kelakios confronted Garcia. Body camera video shows another officer arrive after the shooting and apply a tourniquet to Kelakios' leg. While receiving treatment, Kelakios says, 'Hey, watch yourself. She just pulled it out and shot right at me, bro.' He adds, 'I returned fire, but I don't know how I missed.' He hadn't. Garcia had been hit twice, officials said. She was found nearby and held at gunpoint as she dropped her gun. She was then placed in handcuffs. She apologized while being arrested, and kept saying she tried to help her family. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. The 27-year-old was initially charged with malice murder, but it was downgraded to voluntary manslaughter as part of the plea agreement. A felony murder charge was dropped. Photo by Drew Gurian/Invision/AP, File What To Know The DeKalb County Police Department responded to a report of a person shot at around 3:37 a.m. on January 21, 2021. Officers found Rooks suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. EMS arrived at the scene and confirmed that he was deceased. A family member of the victim told officials that Rooks was last seen with Hawk, who had picked Rooks up from a friend's house in a white BMW SUV. Security camera footage from a home near the crime scene showed a white BMW SUV fleeing the area at a high rate of speed minutes after shots were fired. Hawk was taken into custody on February 1, 2021. He admitted to shooting Rooks in an interview with investigators. Ballistics testing revealed that the bullets found at the scene matched the gun found on Hawk at the time of his arrest. GPS data obtained by officials also showed Hawk's BMW at the scene around the time of the shooting. Chanel Hudson-O'Connor, Hawk's publicist, said he wanted to thank those who shared their support during this "incredibly difficult" time. "Ricky wants his family, fans, and supporters to know that he is deeply sorry for the pain and disappointment he has caused," Hudson-O'Connor said in a statement posted on Instagram. Hawk released "Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)" on SoundCloud in 2015, drawing inspiration from hip-hop dance trends such as the Whip, the Nae Nae, and the Stanky Leg. The song went viral on YouTube and Vine, peaking at number three on the Billboard Hot 100. Hawk was arrested in 2020 in Santa Ana, California, on a domestic violence charge, then released. The Los Angeles Police Department charged him with assault with a deadly weapon the next day after the rapper allegedly entered the wrong home while looking for his girlfriend and swung a hatchet at two people. Later that year, he was arrested in DeKalb County after officials said they detected him driving 143 miles per hour on Interstate 85. He was later released. What People Are Saying Chanel Hudson-O'Connor, in a statement posted on Instagram: "We kindly ask the public to continue praying for all parties involved—especially Ricky—as he continues to battle severe mental health challenges." Richard Lamar "Ricky" Hawk, in a statement shared by Hudson-O'Connor: "I can't reverse time, but I can serve the time I've been given lawfully, and strive to positively contribute to whatever my new environment may be." What Happens Next DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Courtney Johnson, who presided over the plea hearing, sentenced Hawk to 30 years in prison. Hawk has been held at the DeKalb County Jail since his arrest, and he will receive credit for time served. The Georgia Department of Corrections is responsible for evaluating and treating Hawk's mental health as he serves his sentence, according to state law. YPD, OSHP, find guns, marijuana in cars that were part of chase investigation
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Reports said police and state troopers Wednesday found guns and marijuana in two cars that were recovered during a high-speed chase Tuesday. The cars, which were in a city impound at 703 Wilson Ave., were seized after a man was arrested following a chase about 11 p.m. Monday that ended after the driver went to a building in the 1100 block of Andrews Ave and parked there. In the building, police found a Jeep heavily damaged by gunfire that had two guns inside in plain view and a dodge Charger that had a large amount of marijuana inside. Police had the cars towed and got a search warrant to search them Wednesday in the impound lot. Inside the Jeep, officers found an AR-15 pistol and a 9mm handgun. Inside the Charger, police found several packs of marijuana edibles, packages of marijuana in small and bulk size and five packs of disposal THC vape pens, reports said. The man who led police on the chase, Derrian Thomas, was arraigned Wednesday in municipal court and is free after posting $7,500 bond. He is due for a preliminary hearing June 18.
