Turning Vision into Reality
The first development cooperation initiatives date back to the 1980s, focusing on rural development projects aimed at agricultural mechanization and improving crop quality, particularly in olive cultivation. The introduction of selected varieties of Italian olive cultivations has been instrumental in enhancing production efficiency and adapting it to Pakistan's climate. This initiative continues to be promoted in value chain development projects. However, Italy's support for Pakistan has even deeper roots. In 1955, at the initiative of the last Wali Moghul of the Independent State of Swat, Professor Giuseppe Tucci founded the Italian Archaeological Mission in Pakistan. The Italian Archaeological mission has played a pivotal role in the excavation, restoration, and study of Gandharan art, as well as in the analysis of settlements, funerary archaeology (from prehistory to the Islamic period), and rock art, producing over 1,500 publications.
Since the establishment of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) in 2016, Italy's development cooperation has been aligned with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development across key sectors, including education, healthcare, gender equality, natural resource management, and the preservation of cultural heritage. Within this framework and in line with the Government's policies and development plans, AICS in Pakistan has defined a targeted strategic approach, focused on food security, climate resilience, decent work, and cultural heritage valorisation. This approach aims to tackle vulnerabilities in the agricultural sector and address climate change thereby representing the orientation of our action. The environment and people are at the centre of the Italian Cooperation projects, which contribute to a green economy and just society, with special consideration for women and youth.
By leveraging the country's capital and resources, encouraging results have been achieved in the agriculture sector; strengthening the Pakistani olive oil value chain by involving institutions, businesses, farmers, youth, women and consumers to improve the productivity and quality of Pakistani olive oil. Also, important activities have been carried out to improve climate adaptation through the environmental monitoring and natural resource management, especially in the mountainous areas.
Key partnerships include CIHEAM for the scale-up of the olive sector, UNDP and EvK2-CNR NGO for enhancing climate resilience, and UNESCO to promote inclusive and climate sensitive education. Additionally, we confirm our commitment in Pakistan with new initiatives that are starting with FAO and CESVI NGO in Sindh, with University Ca' Foscari of Venice, ILO and ISCOS NGO in KP, respectively to improve anticipatory action, protect cultural heritage, and promote green jobs and economic inclusion.

COAS credits Trump with 'preventing many wars'

The army chief, who is on an official visit to the United States, held high-level engagements with senior American political and military leadership as well as the Pakistani diaspora, according to a statement issued here by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). Speaking to the Pakistani Americans, the army chief said that Pakistan achieved notable successes on the diplomatic front, while praising President Trump's leadership for helping avert wars and creating opportunities for renewed bilateral engagement. The army chief described overseas Pakistanis as the country's strength, calling their role as a "brain gain" rather than a brain drain. He said the new generation's ideas, priorities, and global connections were a valuable national asset, with the potential to accelerate Pakistan's progress. He stressed that the nation's prosperity was closely tied to its global diaspora. He also said that an anticipated Pakistan-US trade deal would bring foreign investment to the country. Highlighting Pakistan's demographic advantage, the COAS noted that 64% of its population was under the age of 30. He urged expatriates to use their resources and influence to channel investment into the country, adding that national development was inseparable from global engagement. On security and regional issues, the army chief reiterated that Pakistan had no sympathy for terrorists and was committed to bringing them to justice. He expressed concern over India's Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) being involved in acts of terrorism, warning that such activities were a matter of grave concern. He vowed a swift and forceful response to any Indian aggression. Reaffirming Pakistan's stance on Jammu and Kashmir, the army chief said that it was not an internal matter of India but an internationally recognised dispute, echoing Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah's description of it as Pakistan's "jugular vein". Earlier, the army chief attended the retirement ceremony of US Central Command (Centcom) chief General Michael E Kurilla in Tampa, and the change of command ceremony for Admiral Brad Cooper, who has taken over the role. The COAS praised the outgoing commander's role in strengthening bilateral military cooperation and expressed confidence in continued collaboration under the new leadership. He also met Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan Caine, discussing matters of mutual professional interest and inviting him to visit Pakistan. On the sidelines, the army chief interacted with defence chiefs from other friendly countries. While addressing members of the Pakistani diaspora, the COAS urged them to remain optimistic about Pakistan's future and contribute towards attracting investment to the country. The expatriates, in turn, pledged to support Pakistan's progress. The visit comes just two months after the army chief's high-profile trip to Washington, where he met US President Donald Trump and senior administration officials. That visit, viewed as a significant step in recalibrating Islamabad-Washington ties, took place against the backdrop of a cooling in US-India relations. Observers say the renewed military-to-military contacts could pave the way for broader cooperation, particularly in regional security and counterterrorism efforts. According to sources, security cooperation between Pakistan and the US has never been so strong as it is right now. Unlike the previous Biden administration, the current US dispensation has more open approach towards Pakistan. There has been growing realisation in the Trump Administration that Pakistan, contrary to the perception, has shown great willingness to work with Washington. On the other hand, the view about India in Washington has changed quite dramatically as many US officials view their Indian counterparts arrogant and less receptive to issues of concerns.

Army chief meets top US political, military leadership
ISLAMABAD: Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, NI (M), Chief of Army Staff (COAS), is undertaking an official visit to the United States. During the visit, he has engaged in high-level interactions with senior political and military leadership, as well as, members of the Pakistani diaspora. In Tampa, COAS attended the Retirement Ceremony of outgoing Commander United States Central Command (CENTCOM), General Michael E Kurilla, and the Change of Command Ceremony marking the assumption of command by Admiral Brad Cooper. In meeting with COAS Munir, Trump lauds Pakistan's ongoing efforts for regional peace, stability COAS lauded General Kurilla's exemplary leadership and his invaluable contributions to strengthening bilateral military cooperation, and extended his best wishes to Admiral Cooper, expressing confidence in continued collaboration to address shared security challenges. COAS also met with Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine, where matters of mutual professional interest were discussed. He extended an invitation to General Caine to visit Pakistan. On the sidelines, COAS interacted with Chiefs of Defence from friendly nations. During an interactive session with the Pakistani diaspora, COAS urged them to remain confident in Pakistan's bright future and to actively contribute to attracting investments.
