Italian Cooperation in Pakistan has a long history of commitment to sustainable development, poverty reduction, and improving the living conditions of the most vulnerable communities.
The first development cooperation initiatives date back to the 1980s, focusing on rural development projects aimed at agricultural mechanization and improving crop quality, particularly in olive cultivation. The introduction of selected varieties of Italian olive cultivations has been instrumental in enhancing production efficiency and adapting it to Pakistan's climate. This initiative continues to be promoted in value chain development projects. However, Italy's support for Pakistan has even deeper roots. In 1955, at the initiative of the last Wali Moghul of the Independent State of Swat, Professor Giuseppe Tucci founded the Italian Archaeological Mission in Pakistan. The Italian Archaeological mission has played a pivotal role in the excavation, restoration, and study of Gandharan art, as well as in the analysis of settlements, funerary archaeology (from prehistory to the Islamic period), and rock art, producing over 1,500 publications.
Since the establishment of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) in 2016, Italy's development cooperation has been aligned with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development across key sectors, including education, healthcare, gender equality, natural resource management, and the preservation of cultural heritage. Within this framework and in line with the Government's policies and development plans, AICS in Pakistan has defined a targeted strategic approach, focused on food security, climate resilience, decent work, and cultural heritage valorisation. This approach aims to tackle vulnerabilities in the agricultural sector and address climate change thereby representing the orientation of our action. The environment and people are at the centre of the Italian Cooperation projects, which contribute to a green economy and just society, with special consideration for women and youth.
By leveraging the country's capital and resources, encouraging results have been achieved in the agriculture sector; strengthening the Pakistani olive oil value chain by involving institutions, businesses, farmers, youth, women and consumers to improve the productivity and quality of Pakistani olive oil. Also, important activities have been carried out to improve climate adaptation through the environmental monitoring and natural resource management, especially in the mountainous areas.
Key partnerships include CIHEAM for the scale-up of the olive sector, UNDP and EvK2-CNR NGO for enhancing climate resilience, and UNESCO to promote inclusive and climate sensitive education. Additionally, we confirm our commitment in Pakistan with new initiatives that are starting with FAO and CESVI NGO in Sindh, with University Ca' Foscari of Venice, ILO and ISCOS NGO in KP, respectively to improve anticipatory action, protect cultural heritage, and promote green jobs and economic inclusion.

Bilawal-led Pakistani delegation ends two-day UN visit in New York
Listen to article A high-level Pakistani parliamentary delegation led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, chairman of the Pakistan Peoples' Party and former foreign minister, wrapped up a two-day visit to the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The delegation conveyed Pakistan's stance on regional tensions, urging respect for international law and peaceful relations with neighbours. During the visit, the delegation met with the UN Secretary-General, the President of the General Assembly, members of the Security Council, ambassadors of the OIC group, media representatives, civil society, and the Pakistani diaspora. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said Pakistan seeks peaceful, cooperative relations based on equality and mutual respect but will not tolerate aggression or violations of international norms. They rejected India's claims about the April 22 terrorist attack, citing a lack of evidence. Speaking at a press conference at the UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday, he blamed India for using the April 22 Pahalgam attack in IIOJK as a pretext for aggression. He emphasized that Pakistan has consistently condemned terrorism in all its forms and proposed a collaboration between ISI and RAW to combat terrorism. "I am completely confident that if ISI [Inter-Service Intelligence of Pakistan] and RAW [Research and Analysis Wing of India] sat down and worked together to fight these forces, we would see a significant decrease in terrorism both within India and Pakistan," he said. He described the recent ceasefire as a 'welcome first step,' but warned it was 'merely a first step.' Bilawal also highlighted the human cost of terrorism in Pakistan, stating, 'If you compare the number of victims to terrorism then far more Pakistanis are killed by terrorists than Indians.' Concern was raised over India's unilateral decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), vital for more than 240 million Pakistanis. The delegation warned that India's "weaponisation of water" breaches treaty obligations and international law. Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to fighting terrorism in all forms and condemned Indian-sponsored terrorism and transnational assassination campaigns. The delegation called for cooperation over politicisation to combat terrorism effectively. The delegation stressed Pakistan's restrained and lawful response to Indian provocations and warned against attempts to normalise arbitrary strikes in the nuclear-sensitive region, cautioning that such actions could have disastrous consequences. Other members of the delegation included Minister for Climate Change Dr. Musadik Masood Malik; Senator Sherry Rehman, chairperson of the Senate Standing Committee on Climate Change; former foreign ministers Hina Rabbani Khar and Khurram Dastgir Khan; Senator Syed Faisal Ali Subzwari; Senator Bushra Anjum Butt; and former foreign secretaries Jalil Abbas Jilani and Tehmina Janjua. Pakistan sent two delegations to different world capitals as part of Islamabad's diplomatic campaign to present its position on India's aggression following the Pahalgam attack. A nine-member delegation led by Bilawal is visiting the United States, while another team, headed by Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi, is currently in Moscow, where they met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday. Tump assistant commissioner abducted from near Tigranabad, Balochistan
Armed men abducted Tump Assistant Commissioner Hanif Noorzai on Wednesday morning near Tigranabad as he was traveling with his family to Quetta, according to local sources. Eyewitnesses report that between six to eight armed individuals stopped his official vehicle, took him away at gunpoint, and fled with the car. His wife, driver, and official gunman were left at the site and remain unharmed. The incident has prompted a swift response from security forces, who have launched a large-scale search operation in the area. Snap-checking has begun along Zubaida Jalal Road and nearby routes, while intelligence-based efforts are being used to track the abductors. The abduction of a senior government officer has raised concerns over the safety of civil servants in Balochistan, particularly in the Makran region. Authorities have not yet identified those responsible, and no group has claimed responsibility as of now. Efforts to locate and safely recover Assistant Commissioner Noorzai are ongoing. Earlier this week, seven terrorists allegedly affiliated with the India-backed group Fitna al-Hindustan were killed in two separate operations in Balochistan on June 2, 2025. Earlier, the federal government had officially designated all terrorist groups operating in Balochistan as 'Fitna al Hindustan', accusing India of sponsoring a proxy war through these outfits. According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Interior, the move stems from 'the involvement of some organizations and groups in terrorist activities in Balochistan, which are detrimental to Islamic faith, the sovereignty of Pakistan, and its customary traditions'. The notification further stated that the new designation is intended to reflect 'the true nature and ideology' of these groups and their 'nefarious designs' sponsored by India. 'All government entities are directed to start the above practice immediately,' the notification said, underscoring a concerted effort to reframe the narrative around insurgent violence in the province. The announcement came after Islamabad accused India of escalating indirect aggression after what he described as its defeat in a recent security operation dubbed "Marka-e-Haq'.

Security forces eliminate 14 militants in North Waziristan operation: ISPR
Listen to article At least 14 militants allegedly affiliated with Fitna al-Khawarij, a group identified as an Indian proxy, were killed in intellegence-based operations in North Waziristan between June 2 and 3, it emerged on Wednesday. According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), security forces conducted operations in Dhatta Khel area of North Waziristan. "After a fierce exchange of fire, 14 militants affiliated with the Indian-sponsored group were neutralized." Sanitization operations are ongoing in the area to ensure the complete elimination of any remaining threats, said the military's media wing. "Pakistan's armed forces remain resolute in their mission to eradicate Indian-sponsored terrorism and restore lasting peace across the country," the statement added. 'With the professional capability of our security forces, we will uproot the monster of terrorism once and for all.'
