Gujarat AAP MLA Umesh Makwana resigns from party posts, alleges caste bias; suspended hours later for ‘anti-party' activity

Indian Express5 hours ago

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Botad, Umesh Makwana, resigned from his party posts on Thursday, levelling allegations of caste-based discrimination against the party.
Makwana, who was AAP's Whip in the Gujarat Assembly and a national joint secretary, said he would consult his constituents before deciding whether to resign as MLA. He had said he would continue as an AAP worker, but hours later, the party announced his suspension for five years, citing 'anti-party' and 'anti-Gujarat' activities.
The development comes shortly after AAP's Gopal Italia won the Visavadar assembly bypoll.
Addressing a press conference in Gandhinagar, Makwana—who belongs to the Koli community, classified as OBC—alleged that AAP, like other political parties, 'fails to support backward communities beyond elections'.
'Whether it is AAP, BJP or Congress, all use backward communities as vote banks. After elections, leaders from these communities are sidelined,' he said.
Claiming that upper caste leaders are prioritised for prominent positions within AAP, Makwana said, 'The party does not raise its voice for backward communities. When it comes to giving key posts, preference is given to the swarna samaj (upper castes).'
He added, 'I have sent my resignation directly to Arvind Kejriwal (the party's national convener) on WhatsApp. But I will continue working as an AAP worker.'
On whether he would quit the Assembly as well, he said, 'I will consult the people of Botad. They trusted me with this position, and I will not do anything that betrays that trust.'
Makwana denied that his resignation was linked to Gopal Italia potentially being appointed party Whip. 'I have not received any such message from the party,' he said.
Citing recent bypolls in Kadi and Visavadar, Makwana accused the party of caste-based bias in campaign support. 'Our Kadi candidate, a Dalit, fought the election after taking a Rs 10 lakh loan. He got no support. In contrast, Gopal Italia, a Patidar, had the entire party machinery behind him. Crores were spent in Visavadar. This discrimination will not be tolerated,' he alleged.
'You keep Babasaheb's photo, but if you don't follow his ideals, you can't do politics in his name,' he added.
In response, Gujarat AAP president Isudan Gadhvi said the party had suspended Makwana for five years. 'We had been receiving complaints of corruption from Botad against him. He was warned multiple times. The leadership has now taken a final decision,' he said.
Gadhvi also alleged the BJP was attempting to destabilise AAP by poaching its leaders. 'If Makwana has the courage, he should resign as MLA and recontest. I challenge the BJP to give him a ticket and try to win Botad,' he said.
AAP spokesperson Yogesh Jadvani rejected Makwana's allegations of bias, saying the party had given him multiple opportunities. 'Within 15 days of joining AAP, he was made head of the OBC/SC/ST cell, later became a state spokesperson, then an MLA in 2022, national joint secretary, and Whip. He was also fielded from Bhavnagar in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. AAP gave Umeshbhai his political identity,' Jadvani said.
He added, 'When the Koli community needed him, he was often absent. Other AAP leaders, from both upper and backward castes, stepped in. He is now speaking the BJP's language.'
On the allegation that AAP neglected its candidate in Kadi, Jadvani said, 'The Kadi candidate hasn't made any complaint. Umeshbhai was assigned responsibility for Kadi, but he did not remain present during the campaign.'
Responding to Gadhvi's accusations, BJP Gujarat media convener Yagnesh Dave said, 'Isudanbhai is in the habit of blaming BJP for everything. He should look inward and understand why people are leaving his party. BJP has 162 seats and doesn't need to poach MLAs. He should hold himself accountable.'

Former SAD Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia sent to 7-day police remand, Mohali court approves Vigilance Bureau's request

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia was remanded in seven days of police custody by a Mohali court on Thursday. The Punjab Vigilance Bureau had arrested him a day earlier on charges of laundering over Rs 540 crore in alleged drug money. The Vigilance Bureau had sought a 12-day remand, but the court granted seven days. Majithia was brought to the court under tight security. A heavy police presence was also deployed around the court complex during the hearing, as Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) workers continued their protests against Majithia's arrest. Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers shouted slogans against Majithia outside the court. Subsequently, the police detained SAD workers. Government counsel Harry Sofat argued that Majithia misused his official position to accumulate wealth beyond his known sources of income. He emphasised the need to investigate all companies linked to Majithia, and added that it might require taking him outside Mohali. On the other hand, Majithia's counsel, Arshdeep Singh Kaler, claimed that the case was politically motivated. He pointed out that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) report cited by the Vigilance Bureau had been dismissed by the Supreme Court. Speaking to the media outside the court, government lawyer Sofat stated, 'Bikram Singh Majithia has yet to disclose the source of Rs 540 crore in unexplained income, and he has failed to provide any details.'

Palaniswami slams Stalin, asks if DMK has locus standi to utter Anna's name

AIADMK top leader Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday wondered if Chief Minister MK Stalin and the DMK had locus standi to utter Dravidian icon C N Annadurai's name and slammed the CM for 'speaking politics in government function.' The AIADMK top leader yet again blamed the DMK for "family rule" .(PTI file photo) Palaniswami's tirade follows Stalin's "AIADMK has mortgaged the name of Anna itself," jibe. Alleging that the chief minister did nothing for the people during the past 4-year rule of the DMK, Palaniswami said the AIADMK was founded by late leader M G Ramachandran in 1972 as Karunanidhi "buried Anna's ideology" and transformed the DMK into a "family camp," for loot. Further, the leader of opposition said: 'We will not give up Anna even for a day, even a minute, who lives not only in our party's name and flag, but also in our blood.' The AIADMK top leader yet again blamed the DMK for "family rule" and said it went against the ideology of Anna who founded the DMK in 1949. Stalin, who has only "commission, collection and corruption as policy," need not lecture the AIADMK on Periyar and Anna, Palaniswami said. The former chief minister vowed that "peace, prosperity, growth and state rights, lost due to the DMK," would be retrieved by him following a win in the 2026 Assembly election. He said this was his first poll assurance. In a government event at Tirupathur near Vellore, the chief minister, without naming the BJP or any Right wing outfit, said they were trying hard to cause confusion. Invoking the legacy of Periyar, Anna and Karunanidhi, and hailing them for nurturing and shaping the state, Stalin said: "You (Hindu Munnani/BJP) are playing video trivializing such leaders! When such a video clip was played, the mute spectators were those who run their party in the name of Anna, the DMK president hit out at the AIADMK, the archrival. "They (AIADMK) have mortgaged the name of Anna itself. Those who have mortgaged their party, should not be allowed to mortgage Tamil Nadu tomorrow," he said and urged the people to understand the objective of the conspiracy against Tamil Nadu and its people and teach a fitting lesson to the AIADMK and BJP. Annadurai passed away on February 3, 1969. He was the chief minister from 1967 till 1969.

AAP to protest merger of primary schools in U.P.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday announced a statewide protest against the Uttar Pradesh government's proposal to merge primary schools run by the Basic Shiksha Parishad. AAP leader Sanjay Singh addressing a press conference in Lucknow on Thursday. (HT Photo) The party will organise demonstrations in villages and at district headquarters wherever school mergers are planned. 'AAP will not allow the government to shut down schools and will fight to protect the education of children,' Sanjay Singh, Rajya Sabha MP and state in-charge of the party, told media persons on Thursday. Singh criticised the government's priorities, highlighting the contrast between the proposed school mergers and the continued opening of liquor shops. The AAP leader pointed out that the merger of schools will affect the appointments of approximately 1.35 lakh assistant teachers, 27,000 headmasters, and thousands of education workers. He further stated that the government's decision to merge schools violates the Right to Education Act, which mandates free and compulsory education for children in the age group of 6-14 years. Singh also criticised the government's handling of the mid-day meal scheme, stating that instead of improving the quality of meals, the government is focused on opening liquor shops. He urged people to join hands with AAP to fight for the future of education in the state. Statewide outreach The Aam Aadmi Party will launch a statewide outreach campaign, 'Har Ghar Sampark Abhiyan', across the state from July 11. The drive aims to expand the party's grassroots presence across all 403 assembly constituencies in the state. Workers will visit every village, household, and ward to spread the AAP's message, focusing on party chief and former chief minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal's 'Kaam ki Rajneeti' (politics of work) and Sanjay Singh's 'Sewa aur Sangharsh ki Rajneeti' (politics of service and struggle). The party will build its organisation in rural areas, strengthening its presence in 75 districts, 826 blocks, and approximately 57,000 gram panchayats.
