Palaniswami slams Stalin, asks if DMK has locus standi to utter Anna's name

Hindustan Times5 hours ago

AIADMK top leader Edappadi K Palaniswami on Thursday wondered if Chief Minister MK Stalin and the DMK had locus standi to utter Dravidian icon C N Annadurai's name and slammed the CM for 'speaking politics in government function.' The AIADMK top leader yet again blamed the DMK for "family rule" .(PTI file photo)
Palaniswami's tirade follows Stalin's "AIADMK has mortgaged the name of Anna itself," jibe. Alleging that the chief minister did nothing for the people during the past 4-year rule of the DMK, Palaniswami said the AIADMK was founded by late leader M G Ramachandran in 1972 as Karunanidhi "buried Anna's ideology" and transformed the DMK into a "family camp," for loot.
Further, the leader of opposition said: 'We will not give up Anna even for a day, even a minute, who lives not only in our party's name and flag, but also in our blood.'
The AIADMK top leader yet again blamed the DMK for "family rule" and said it went against the ideology of Anna who founded the DMK in 1949. Stalin, who has only "commission, collection and corruption as policy," need not lecture the AIADMK on Periyar and Anna, Palaniswami said.
The former chief minister vowed that "peace, prosperity, growth and state rights, lost due to the DMK," would be retrieved by him following a win in the 2026 Assembly election. He said this was his first poll assurance.
In a government event at Tirupathur near Vellore, the chief minister, without naming the BJP or any Right wing outfit, said they were trying hard to cause confusion.
Invoking the legacy of Periyar, Anna and Karunanidhi, and hailing them for nurturing and shaping the state, Stalin said: "You (Hindu Munnani/BJP) are playing video trivializing such leaders!
When such a video clip was played, the mute spectators were those who run their party in the name of Anna, the DMK president hit out at the AIADMK, the archrival.
"They (AIADMK) have mortgaged the name of Anna itself. Those who have mortgaged their party, should not be allowed to mortgage Tamil Nadu tomorrow," he said and urged the people to understand the objective of the conspiracy against Tamil Nadu and its people and teach a fitting lesson to the AIADMK and BJP.
Annadurai passed away on February 3, 1969. He was the chief minister from 1967 till 1969.

Strict action against anyone disrupting Kanwar Yatra: Dy CM

1 2 Prayagraj: Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Thursday said the state govt would take strict legal action against anyone disrupting the faith and devotion of kanwariyas. "Kanwar Yatra is a symbol of faith, discipline and enthusiasm. Govt is making elaborate arrangements for the yatra across the state in the month of Shravan. However, mischievous elements should not be given any opportunity to spoil the environment," he said. Maurya was in city to participate in poet Bankim Chandra Chatterjee's birth anniversary celebrations. He said all religious events must be conducted with devotion, safety, and social harmony, and the administrative machinery must work with full sensitivity and alertness. He also lashed out at Samajwadi Party and said whenever land grabbing cases involving people associated with the SP are being investigated, they make baseless allegations. On the question of grabbing govt land by slain Atiq Ahmed's henchmen, the Deputy CM said whoever is involved in such misdeeds should immediately stop this or else the state govt will teach them a lesson. Speaking on Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Maurya said: "His poem Vande Mataram is a great mantra that helped India break the shackles of British slavery and increased the honour of the Indian tricolour. Our freedom fighters embraced execution while singing this mantra." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo He said Chatterjee's pen did the work that even swords couldn't do. He also garlanded the pictures of Chatterjee and Bharat Mata. On the occasion, the district unit of BJP organised a mass singing of "Vande Mataram" at Amar Shaheed Chandrashekhar Azad Circuit House on Thursday. BJP's Prayagraj Mahanagar president Sanjay Gupta said: "Prayagraj is the only district where every year a collective Vande Mataram is sung on the birth anniversary of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee on June 26. This is a matter of pride. Vande Mataram is our consciousness and our strength."

Mamata: Why are Bengali-speakers tortured across India every day?

Digha/Kolkata: Why were those speaking Bengali "being tortured across the country every day", CM said on Thursday. Speaking in Digha, where she has gone to attend the first Rath Yatra of the newly inaugurated Jagannath temple, the CM spoke of Bengali-speaking migrant workers being detained at two places in Odisha. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Asking Odisha "not to be jealous", Banerjee said while she respected the Puri Jagannath temple, she expected the same respect for the Digha Jagannath temple. "I learnt that in Cuttack, 100 Bengali migrant workers were kept in detention camps. In Balasore, 17 are stuck. Is speaking Bengali a crime? Earlier too, we facilitated the release of many of our workers. I will ask the chief secretary to sort this out. People belong to different states. But we are Indians. You are torturing them because they speak in Bengali. Why should this happen every day?" she said. The CM said the task of identifying illegal immigrants lay with the Centre as its agencies man the borders, and that could not be an excuse to target Bengali-speakers. "BSF and CISF are responsible for illegal immigrants, not the state. Who is responsible for customs, borders, railways? It is your duty, not the state's. We have proof of who all they facilitated to enter India. Nothing is in our hands. The Centre should look into this," Banerjee said. Saying she had great affection for those from the neighbouring state, the CM said: "People from Odisha also come to see our Jagannath temple. We love and respect them. Let them (Odisha govt) do what they want. They say 'Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas', then why are you jealous?" said Banerjee. Emphasising that "religion means humanity", Banerjee said: "Those who are performing puja are doing it following all scriptures. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Any state can say what it wants. Even here, the Daitapati was present during the inauguration. An FIR was filed in my name, but I was not even involved. I did not lodge an FIR. Your behaviour and actions show the person you are." The CM also brought up AAP's recent win in the Visavadar bypoll in Gujarat, saying: "BJP is finished in Gujarat." Banerjee, however, refused to comment on former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, calling this an "an internal matter of another party". Talking about RSS, the CM said: "I respect a few RSS people, but their recent actions have raised doubts. They send observers who hold meetings with BJP and CAPF."

ECI weighs 70 issues as parties push reform

iStock Representative image. New Delhi: The Election Commission is examining nearly 70 suggestions and issues flagged by political parties on election process, with a bulk of them focused on electoral rolls-calling for greater transparency, digitisation, and uploading of Form 17C showing booth-wise turnout and result data, ET has half of these suggestions have come from BJP, followed by the Samajwadi Party (SP), Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), and CPM. The Congress is yet to engage with ECI had in March sought inputs from all recognised parties after the Trinamool Congress flagged the 'duplicate' EPIC controversy. The BJP has proposed that the poll panel move beyond relying solely on state officials-District Election Officers (DEOs) and Electoral Registration Officers (EROs)-for the draft electoral rolls, and instead consider hiring non-partisan, trained, and paid professionals for the summary revision. It has also recommended that procedures under Sections 22, 23, and 24 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951-relating to corrections, name inclusion, and appeals-be simplified, digitised, and made publicly accessible. Further, the BJP has sought the use of modern IT tools and artificial intelligence to detect and remove duplicate entries across SP has demanded monthly booth-wise electoral roll updates and weekly updates during Special Summary Revision (SSR), to be shared with political parties by SP has demanded strict one-year retention of reports related to door-to-door verification and Forms 6, 6A, 7, and 8, These should be made available on payment of a prescribed fee. The party also wants candidates to be given lists of Absentee/Shifted/Dead or Duplicate voters to prevent impersonation and bogus voting. The Sikkim Democratic Front is the only party demanding linkage of Aadhaar with Voter EPIC numbers. The CPM has called for uploading Part 1 of Form 17C (voter turnout data) on the ECI website immediately after polling, followed by Part 2 (result data) post-declaration. The CPM has also flagged concerns over the appointment process for the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners, calling for reforms to ensure impartiality. The BSP has said that the mandatory publication of criminal antecedents in newspapers is financially burdensome for candidates from weaker economic backgrounds. The CPI(M) echoed this, calling it an unfair cost for underfunded parties. The BJP, meanwhile, has suggested dedicated cells for swift action on Model Code violations, complete videography at polling stations, and appointment of nodal officers to monitor poll-related violations on social media platforms.
