New Delhi: The Election Commission is examining nearly 70 suggestions and issues flagged by political parties on election process, with a bulk of them focused on electoral rolls-calling for greater transparency, digitisation, and uploading of Form 17C showing booth-wise turnout and result data, ET has learnt.Nearly half of these suggestions have come from BJP, followed by the Samajwadi Party (SP), Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), and CPM. The Congress is yet to engage with ECI.The ECI had in March sought inputs from all recognised parties after the Trinamool Congress flagged the 'duplicate' EPIC controversy.
The BJP has proposed that the poll panel move beyond relying solely on state officials-District Election Officers (DEOs) and Electoral Registration Officers (EROs)-for the draft electoral rolls, and instead consider hiring non-partisan, trained, and paid professionals for the summary revision. It has also recommended that procedures under Sections 22, 23, and 24 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951-relating to corrections, name inclusion, and appeals-be simplified, digitised, and made publicly accessible.
Further, the BJP has sought the use of modern IT tools and artificial intelligence to detect and remove duplicate entries across seats. The SP has demanded monthly booth-wise electoral roll updates and weekly updates during Special Summary Revision (SSR), to be shared with political parties by DEOs.The SP has demanded strict one-year retention of reports related to door-to-door verification and Forms 6, 6A, 7, and 8, These should be made available on payment of a prescribed fee. The party also wants candidates to be given lists of Absentee/Shifted/Dead or Duplicate voters to prevent impersonation and bogus voting. The Sikkim Democratic Front is the only party demanding linkage of Aadhaar with Voter EPIC numbers.
The CPM has called for uploading Part 1 of Form 17C (voter turnout data) on the ECI website immediately after polling, followed by Part 2 (result data) post-declaration.
The CPM has also flagged concerns over the appointment process for the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners, calling for reforms to ensure impartiality. The BSP has said that the mandatory publication of criminal antecedents in newspapers is financially burdensome for candidates from weaker economic backgrounds. The CPI(M) echoed this, calling it an unfair cost for underfunded parties.
The BJP, meanwhile, has suggested dedicated cells for swift action on Model Code violations, complete videography at polling stations, and appointment of nodal officers to monitor poll-related violations on social media platforms.

"Mamata Banerjee has politicised Lord Jagannath": Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 27 (ANI): Union Minister and West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar asserted that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is 'politicising' Lord Jagannath and claimed that Rath Yatra in Digha was being organised for vote bank politics. 'Organising a Rath Yatra is not the job of any government. Jagannath Puri is different, and it happens there, but Mamata Banerjee is doing this to divide the Hindu vote bank. Mamata Banerjee thinks that as the Hindu votes are slipping away from her, her rule will end, and she can do anything to maintain it. This is all political; Mamata Banerjee has politicised Lord Jagannath. Our stand is that wherever the BJP is present, it will participate in the Rath Yatra.' Earlier, CM Mamata Banerjee visited the Lord Jagannath temple in Digha in West Bengal on Thursday, ahead of the Jagannath Rath Yatra scheduled to start on June 27. CM Mamata Banerjee said, 'Lord Jagannath temple has become a major place of pilgrimage. The Rath Yatra will be held on a 1 km route from 9 am to 4 pm tomorrow. The aarti will be performed at 2.30 pm. Our ministerial team has arrived here for this.' The Rs 250 crore temple in Digha, constructed over 20 acres, was inaugurated by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on April 30, 2025. The temple, inspired by the 12th-century Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri, houses the same deities. Meanwhile, the temple town of Odisha's Puri is all set to witness the Jagannath Rath Yatra, 2025. During the festival, devotees draw the grand chariots of the three deities--Lord Jagannath, his brother Lord Balabhadra, and sister goddess Subhadra--to Gundicha Temple, where the deities reside for a week and then return to the Jagannath temple. The Rath Yatra ceremony is expected to attract a large crowd, making traffic management a key issue(ANI)

"Should we call Indira Gandhi a saint for imprisoning Constitution?": BJP's Shehzad Poonawalla slams Congress

New Delhi [India], June 27 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Shehzad Poonawalla slammed Congress government in Karnataka over the registration of FIR against state BJP unit iover a social media post related to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Speaking to ANI, Poonawalla pointed out that rather focussing on the social media post, Karantaka Congress should focus on setting up the accountability for the 'murder' of 11 people in the Bengaluru stampede. 'Now will there be an FIR on stating facts? Should we call Indira Gandhi a saint for imprisoning the constitution? and for the way sterilisation of crores was done, lakhs were put in jail, lakhs were made homeless, basic constitutional rights were ripped off, 250 journalists were imprisoned. There are no FIR on the people who call PM Modi Hitler and demean him each day,' BJP spokesperson said. 'Today Karnataka Congress is screaming that they have Emergency-like DNA. There is no accountability for the 'murder' of 11 people in stampede, multiple scams, inflation and breaking promises made in manifesto, girl child harassed in broad daylight. This represents their priority,' he added. This comes after an FIR was registered against Karnataka BJP over their controversial social media post on X, targeting former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Earlier today, Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara defended the registration of an FIR against the Karnataka BJP for its controversial post on 'X' targeting former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, saying the action was taken in response to complaints. Speaking to reporters, Parameshwara said, 'FIRs are registered based on certain complaints or suo moto if there are some things which generate animosity among people. In this case, if someone tries to malign the leader who served the country for many years and considers the positive development during that time, naturally, some people will object.' Karnataka BJP Chief BY Vijayendra defended the party's social media post, claiming that it was an apt description of the emergency imposed. 'Yesterday was the completion of 50 years of the day when Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency in the country. This issue has been discussed nationwide. What is wrong with the BJP's comparison of Indira Gandhi to Hitler? The world knows how the entire democracy collapsed to save her power... Senior leaders, Sangh parivar, everybody was put behind bars, and the media was suppressed... Probably DK Shivakumar must go back and learn what history has to say about the Emergency, about how democracy was suppressed,' he said. Between 25 June 1975 and 21 March 1977, India was placed under a state of Emergency under Article 352 of the Constitution. On 25 June 1975, the then-President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed issued the Emergency Proclamation under Article 352, citing threats from internal disturbance. This was the third Emergency in India's history, but the first one declared in peacetime. Earlier proclamations were during wars with China (1962) and Pakistan (1971). (ANI)

'Wearing clothes given by our govt & still targeting us': Maharashtra BJP MLA stirs row

Former Maharashtra minister Babanrao Lonikar sparked controversy after a video showed him criticising youths for targeting state govt on social media and being ungrateful despite "wearing clothes given by our govt". Lonikar's remarks, made Wednesday at a public event, left the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance in a bind, prompting CM Devendra Fadnavis to reprimand the Jalna MLA. In the video, Lonikar can be heard telling the youths: "PM Modi gave your father Rs 6,000 (annually) for agriculture. Money from Ladki Bahin scheme came in the name of your mother, your sister, and your wife. The clothes... shoes or slippers on your feet are because of us. Even the phones in your hands are because of us. You take all from us and still talk against us." Fadnavis said, "Lonikar should not have made such a statement at a time when Modi calls himself pradhan sevak and we all are following the idea. " Lonikar did not respond to calls and messages seeking his reaction to the row. Leader of opposition in the Maharashtra legislative council Ambadas Danve called his remarks an "Indian-version of British-era mentality".
