Carey Mulligan in talks for key role in Greta Gerwig's Narnia movie
Carey Mulligan is in negotiations to join Greta Gerwig's 'Narnia' movie.
The 39-year-old actress is currently in talks to portray the ill mother of Digory Kirke, one of the two child protagonists in the fantasy tale, The Hollywood Reporter has said.
If she signs on to the movie, Mulligan will be joining a star-studded cast for Netflix's 'Narnia' film, which could include Meryl Streep as lion Aslan the Great, Daniel Craig as Digory's uncle and Emma Mackey as Jadis the White Witch.
Although Craig has been attached to the role of Digory's uncle, The Hollywood Reporter has said conversations are at a 'super early' stage, and the former 'James Bond' actor has not officially signed on yet.
Meanwhile, Mackey reportedly bested Charli xcx and Margaret Qualley for the role of the White Witch, both of whom had also been in contention for the part.
While 'Narnia' has attracted plenty of A-list talent, Netflix are currently searching for young actors to portray Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer.
The 'Narnia' movie will reportedly be an adaptation of author C.S. Lewis' 1955 novel 'The Magician's Nephew', which follows two children who stumble into strange worlds through magical rings and witness the creation of Narnia.
Along the way, they awaken an evil queen and must grapple with choices that shape entire realms.
As well as directing the movie, Gerwig, 41, is also set to write the screenplay.
Meanwhile, Mark Gordon, Amy Pascal and Vincent Sieber are to produce the picture.
In 2018, Netflix announced it would be making a new movie adaptation of Lewis' fantasy series of the same name, and signed Gerwig to direct the project two years later.
While updates on the 'Narnia' flick have been slow since then, it was recently reported that Gerwig had successfully convinced Netflix to give her film an extended run on IMAX screens globally on Thanksgiving Day 2026 (26.11.26) ahead of its release to Netflix on Christmas Day (25.12.26).
As well as an adaptation of 'The Magician's Nephew', Gerwig is also set to write and direct another project based on the fantasy series.
In a profile in The New Yorker, the 'Barbie' filmmaker said: 'It would have to be something that has some strange hook in me, that feels like it goes to the marrow.'
After it was confirmed Gerwig would be helming 'Narnia', the director said she had a reverence for the series, and wanted to treat Lewis' work with care.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4, she said: 'I'm slightly in the place of terror because I really do have such reverence for 'Narnia'.
'I loved 'Narnia' so much as a child, [and] as an adult, C.S. Lewis as a thinker and a writer. I'm intimidated by doing this. It's something that feels like a worthy thing to be intimidated by.
'As a non-British person, I feel a particular sense of wanting to do it correctly … it's like when Americans do Shakespeare, there's a slight feeling of reverence and as if maybe we should treat it with extra care. It is not our countryman.'

Zoe Saldana is refusing to give smart phones to her 10-year-old twins. The Hollywood actress is mother to 10-year-old sons Cy and Bowie - as well as their younger brother Zen, eight - with her husband Marco Perego and she's revealed the elder boys have been pestering her for smart phones but she's refusing to give in to their demands. Zoe told The Hollywood Reporter: "The phone has become a conversation with the 10-year-olds right now. "And we're okay with repeating the big sermon: 'You will have it eventually, but right now, everything that you may need that comes from a phone, we can provide'. "My kids right now, they're going through a period where, yes, they'll talk about it, but when we do give them the phone, they just want to look at their baby pictures." Zoe - who stars in new advertising campaign for T-Mobile - went on to admit she isn't great with technology herself and only cares about whether a phone has a good camera. ‘Meghan doesn't play the community game': Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Montecito neighbours speak out
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Montecito neighbours have taken aim at the Sussexes for doing little for the 'community' despite using the town for their money-making ventures. Markle, 43, and Harry, 40, live in a sprawling Montecito property that boasts both ocean and mountain views, which has formed a backdrop for many of their projects since leaving the royal family. Most recently, Markle rented a second Montecito home to film Netflix cooking series With Love, Meghan. Despite living in the exclusive coastal enclave for almost five years, Montecito local Richard Mineards claimed Markle 'doesn't play the community game'. 'She cultivates a very controlled image. She pays attention to every appearance, every word, every gesture,' he told Ici Paris. 'And here in Montecito, we appreciate simple people, even famous ones. 'Oprah Winfrey, for example, shows up at charity events. Meghan doesn't play the community game.' The Sussexes originally snapped up their 16-bedroom estate in the idyllic community for about AUD $21 million in June 2020 but appear to have made few connections in the area. Although Montecito is also home to a few A-list stars, namely Oprah Winfrey, the community is located more than a two-hour drive from the bright lights of Hollywood. While Mr Mineards claimed Meghan showed little interest in the community, the Duke of Sussex is noticeably more willing to engage with locals. '(Harry) is always charming, approachable, with that very recognisable Windsor accent,' he said. 'He smiles, shakes hands, willingly exchanges a few words. 'We've seen him at the beach, in an organic coffee shop, or cycling in the hills.' The update comes almost two years after an elderly veteran living in Harry and Meghan's street claimed he was flatly turned away at the gate to the Sussexes' compound. United States Navy veteran Frank McGinity claimed his attempts to introduce himself to the couple and gift them a film about the local area failed after he was "turned away". 'Harry and Meghan live on old McCormick property and I went up to their gate with the films on a CD, but they weren't interested,' he told the local newspaper Montecito Journal in July 2023. "The gate guy turned me away and wouldn't take the film, just saying 'they're not interested'. I was trying to be neighbourly."
