Secrets of Ireland's fridges uncovered as Currys launches For The Tech You Love

More than half of Ireland's refrigerators contain leftovers that will never be eaten, while one fridge in four is home to a Tupperware container which holds contents that are a mystery even to the owner.
These are just two of the revelations from a new survey into how Irish consumers use our fridges, and what their contents reveal about us.
The nationwide survey was commissioned by Currys to launch its new brand ad campaign For The Tech You Love.
The campaign celebrates the humble fridge and indicates the truth behind our most common kitchen appliance, that we're a nation of chaos-stackers and cheese hoarders.
A massive 95 percent of us always have milk chilling on standby, while 57 percent admit clinging to 'leftovers we'll never eat'. #
And nearly a quarter of us confess to owning a 'mystery' Tupperware container in which the contents are best left unidentified - while almost half of us (40 percent) keep items that are technically expired but 'still smell grand'.
The national debate over what actually belongs in the fridge rages on too. Two thirds of us (67 percent) keep their ketchup cold, 61 percent refrigerate their eggs, and 32 percent chill chocolate, all of which should spark another round of fridge vs press warfare in households across the country.
Meanwhile, our cleanliness could use a boost: only 10 percent clean of us clean our fridge weekly, while more than a quarter wait until something starts to smell. No surprise that the feature most people want in a future fridge is a self-cleaning mode (61 percent ).
Roz Purcell topped the list of Irish celebs we trust to have the most organised fridge, while south Dublin won the unofficial crown for Ireland's fanciest fridge setups (with a smug 73 percent of the vote ). While most of us admit trying to find a system to tame the chaos.

Irish people are well known for their love of a Friday night treat from the local 'chipper'. Whether it's a fish supper or a battered sausage that tickles your fancy, you're spoilt for choice with thousands of take away restaurants throughout the country. But do we ever stop to ponder what goes on behind the scenes of our favourite fry-ups? Jordan Luxford certainly does. With a five-year stint across various fish and chip shops under his belt, he's picked up nifty tricks and has some stern advice on what to give a miss when ordering. Now at the helm of A-Star Waste Management, Jordan has decided to spill the beans on the inner workings he witnessed first-hand while serving up this classic fast food. Lifting the lid on frying techniques, Jordan shared: "Most people wouldn't know that after we cook battered products in our oil, we would follow it with a batch of chips," reports the Mirror. This, he explains, is a clever way to cleanse the oil of tiny batter bits that stick around even after straining. With a vast array of items tossed into those sizzling vats, the ex-chef pointed out that there's plenty more variety than just standard cod and haddock – even sweet treats like chocolate bars make the cut. Yet, from his time in the trenches, there are specific dishes Jordan steers clear of nowadays. Telling the Express, he stated plainly: "I would never order a fried beef burger! If you want a decent burger, get it from a shop with a hot plate to cook it on." The staff are more than willing to whip up a fresh delight as one worker dishes: "If you want a freshly cooked item go for something that isn't in the glass top under the lights but we would cook anything fresh if a customer asked anyway." And wait till you hear about the unique treat that has folk talking - fried chocolate bars! "Fried chocolate bars have always been popular too. We would usually cook them for free alongside an order and as we wouldn't have the chocolate bars in stock, the customer would be asked to bring them with them and we would cook them at the same time as the rest of their order." But it isn't just about frying up grub; turns out there's more to chippy life than meets the eye. The graft that goes into prepping the beloved menu is hefty, with one owner revealing: "The amount of preparation time needed to get everything ready before opening was a huge surprise! It takes hours to cut a Friday night's fish and even more hours to peel, inspect and cut 20 bags of potatoes. Prep for a Friday night, opening at 5.30 pm would start at 10 am." Next time you're demolishing your chip supper in record time, spare a thought for the hard graft that's gone into it - hats off to the unsung heroes behind the counter!

With this school year marking thirty years since the Gaelscoil first opened its doors in Wexford town, the red carpet was rolled out and the community was invited to come and help pupils, staff and management to mark the milestone. While a sports day at Pairc Charman was supposed to form part of the celebrations, the weather failed to play ball, but things were quickly re-arranged and pupils showed off some of their musical talents as príomhoide Dearbhla Mhic Chaoilte thanked the local community and pupils and parents, past and present, for all their support over the years and cut a special 'birthday cake' with the help of the school's oldest and youngest pupils. On foot of a local demand, the first tentative steps to establish a Gaelscoil in Wexford town were taken back in 1994. Initially, the school opened with just 37 pupils, under the leadership of príomhoide Áine Uí Ghionnáin, and it didn't receive permanent recognition from the Department of Education until 1997. Twenty years ago, in 2005, Gaelscoil Charman received its permanent building on Whiterock Hill and it was a momentous day for Áine and her staff. In 2021, Áine retired from her role and was succeeded by Dearbhla Mhic Chaoilte. From it's humble beginnings, the Gaelscoil has gone from strength to strength and today it has over 200 pupils with eight mainstream classes and one ASD class. Indeed it was a huge source of pride when Gaelscoil Charman became one of the first Gaelscoileanna in the south east to open an ASD class and to offer education completely trí Ghaeilge. "Gaelscoil Gharman is proud of its inclusivity and welcomes all families of many different backgrounds,' Príomhoide Mhic Chaoilte said. 'The school community as a whole is united in its love of the Irish language and culture and is very proud to be able to pass on this love to its pupils.'
