Sarawak forms special unit to advance gender equality, says Fatimah
KUCHING (April 22): A special unit on gender equality was established earlier this year under the Sarawak Women and Family Department (JWKS), said Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah.
The Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister stated that the unit's formation reflects the Sarawak government's commitment to addressing gender equality issues, particularly in efforts to empower women.
'There are many others who are doing this, so we benchmark best practices within the country as well as outside the country.
'So basically, what will be the main role this year? The main role, as I said, is about looking at gender equity. Gender equity in various fields, in education, in politics, from every perspective,' she said after the International Women's Day (IWD) 2025 celebration at hotel here yesterday.
She also shared that her Ministry will collaborate with Asian Women's Leadership University College (AWLUC) as a strategic partner.
On another matter, Fatimah said the women's leadership chair at Swinburne University of Technology, Sarawak Campus has been approved to support research and policy development on women in leadership.
'We are fine-tuning its operations and programmes,' she added.
In her speech, Fatimah highlighted that women now make up over 47 per cent of Sarawak's labour force, with significant representation in the services and public sectors.
She further noted that the number of women in senior leadership positions – both in government and in the private sector – is steadily increasing, although there is still much room for growth.
'Despite this progress, we are also aware of the persistent challenges. Gender pay gaps remain an issue, particularly in the private sector and informal employment,' she said.
The event was organised by Sarawak Centre of Performance Excellence (SCOPE) in collaboration with Asian Women's Leadership University College, the Sarawak Department of Women and Family and the Leadership Institute of Sarawak State Civil Service.
Also present were Women's Leadership University College co-founder Tan Sri Zarinah Anwar and SCOPE chief executive officer Joseph Lim.

KUCHING (Aug 13): The Kuching Centralised Wastewater Management Package 2 worth RM750 million is expected to be fully completed by the end of this year, said Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian. According to a Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) report, the Deputy Premier said this project will benefit approximately 4,000 premises in Kubah Ria, Pinang Jawa, Laruh Scheme, Heritage Garden, as well as major buildings such as Normah Medical Centre, Baitulmakmur, and Wisma Bapa Malaysia. 'This marks another significant milestone in Sarawak's infrastructure that will enhance the residents' quality of life,' he said at the Sewerage Services Department Sarawak annual dinner last night. The Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister said Sarawak continues to make headway in developing an integrated sewerage management system, with a series of strategic projects benefiting residents across its major towns and cities. He said this includes the Kuching Centralised Wastewater Management System Zone 1, Package A, which has connected 103,076 population equivalent (PE), or approximately 3,089 premises in Satok, Jalan Ajibah Abol, the city centre, Padungan, and Petanak since its commissioning in 2017. In Miri, the Centralised Sewerage System Phase 1—completed last year—has linked 29,494 PE across 721 premises, including those in Saberkas, Boulevard, Waterfront, Wireless Walk, and Jalan Marbau. He noted that the department has also completed two Septic Sludge Treatment Plants in Miri and Sibu at a combined cost of RM40 million. The Miri plant has so far treated 273,192 cubic metres of sludge, while the Sibu facility has processed 287,621 cubic metres, contributing to public health and environmental protection. Looking ahead, he said the department is planning and designing several major initiatives valued at RM1.653 billion. These are the Kuching Centralised Wastewater Management System Zone 1, Package 3 (around 3,000 houses), Miri Centralised Sewerage System Phase 2 (around 4,200 premises), Samarahan Centralised Sewerage System Phase 1 (around 3,000 houses), and the Bintulu Sewerage System Rationalisation. More than 4,000 civil servants declared bankrupt since 2020
KUALA LUMPUR: Insolvency Department statistics show that 4,194 civil servants have been declared bankrupt from 2020 until June this year, the Dewan Rakyat heard was told. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said this figure represents 0.3 per cent of the country's 1.6 million civil servants. She said the main causes of financial difficulties were high debt commitments and the rising cost of living. However, she said the government would continue to monitor the situation to ensure civil servants manage their finances prudently. "For civil servants, we frequently engage and negotiate with the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK) if they are facing financial issues. "At the same time, for banks, we have the debt service ratio. We monitor this closely — the median is currently 34 per cent, but for us, it is at 41 per cent. "With the cost of living having increased, civil servants are indeed facing problems. "Through the Public Service Remuneration Scheme (SSPA), we have also raised salaries for civil servants, while the government has allocated RM100 for the Payung Rahmah programme, which will directly help civil servants cope with the rising cost of living," she said. Lim said this during the question and answer session, in response to a question from Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (PN-Kuala Krai). Latiff had asked about the government's measures to address the worrying trend of rising household debt, particularly among civil servants, and the relevance of financial institutions approving loans of up to RM400,000 for middle-income earners, as well as control measures to ensure household financial stability. Lim said the country's household debt level remained manageable, with the total reaching RM1.65 trillion, or 84.3 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), as of March 2025. "This shows little change compared to the end of 2024. Household debt levels should also be viewed holistically, particularly by considering household financial assets, which are much larger, totalling RM3.45 trillion during the same period. "Overall, household financial assets remain 2.1 times higher than debt, providing a strong financial buffer. The government has implemented various control measures to manage household debt and strengthen household resilience. "A total of 61.1 per cent of household debt comprises housing loans," she said.
