49ers linked to trio of best remaining NFL free agents

USA Today25-07-2025
San Francisco training camp is officially underway from the SAP Performance Facility in Santa Clara, Calif.
That means the 49ers' 2025 NFL season is finally getting close. As San Francisco ramps up for the campaign ahead during training camp, there could still be a move or two left by the front office before the season arrives.
Pro Football Network likes three of the best remaining NFL free agents as potential fits with the 49ers. PFN included free agent wide receivers Amari Cooper and Gabe Davis and free agent running back Jeff Wilson Jr. as players that would make sense in San Francisco.
Cooper reeled in 44 catches for 547 yards and four scores a season ago across 14 games with the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills. The five-time Pro Bowler would make sense for a 49ers squad that doesn't have a timetable for Brandon Aiyuk's return and that has another top receiver in Jauan Jennings angling for a contract extension.
Here's what PFN said about Cooper and a possible with with the 49ers:
Arguably the top free agent still available, Amari Cooper has a tremendous track record and was a Pro Bowl just two seasons ago. Though he had 1,250 receiving yards in 2023, he dipped down to 547 yards between stints in Cleveland and Buffalo in 2024. Neither team used him as the top target he had previously been.
Cooper deserves a chance at a starting role to prove he still has a lot left in the tank. The five-time Pro Bowl could make sense for WR-needy teams pushing for a deep playoff run like the Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers. - PFN
Another option at wide receiver could be Davis. Still just 26 years old, Davis was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars just one season into a three-year, $39 million contract after a disappointing 2024 campaign where he caught just 20 passes for 239 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
It was easily the least productive season of Davis' career to this point and it concluded with a season-ending torn meniscus after just 10 games played. Maybe that sets the 49ers up to land Davis at a discount, though.
Davis is only 26 years old, so he should have plenty of football left in him, even after his injury. He would be best suited in an offense that allows him to maximize his vertical capabilities. That said, keep an eye on some playoff contenders to consider him on a discounted one-year deal before he signs another contract next offseason. - PFN
Lastly, PFN linked San Francisco to Wilson. The 29-year-old began his career as an undrafted free agent with the 49ers where he was San Francisco's leading rusher during the 2020 season with 126 carries for 600 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.
Wilson had just 16 carries last season with the Dolphins and a return to San Francisco is a fit that might make sense for all parties.
The 49ers still have $45.3 million in effective cap space according to Over The Cap.

Cowboys' Micah Parsons' trade request is 2 years in the making

Cowboys' Micah Parsons' trade request is 2 years in the making originally appeared on The Sporting News Micah Parsons made his trade request last week. But it's been a long time coming for the Dallas Cowboys' superstar. And maybe, just maybe, that's what should have Jerry Jones concerned. This wasn't a spur of the moment move by Parsons. It wasn't just based on a few weeks or even a few months of failed contract negotiations. According to Pro Football Talk, Parsons' agent first opened dialogue with the Cowboys on an extension after the 2023 season. MORE: Rams legend Aaron Donald hints at return from retirement to play with Micah Parsons The interest would've then continued throughout the 2024 offseason leading into the 2024 season, and now at the end of the 2024 campaign into the 2025 offseason with the season fast approaching. It's not like contracts are secret. Everyone knew Parsons' fifth-year option for $24 million would take place in 2025, and that after that, he'd need a new deal. Maybe it wasn't always certain that Parsons would have to be the highest-paid non-QB in the NFL, but that's been clear for a while, and it certainly is now. Sure, the Cowboys had other business to attend to. They left Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb's big contracts until very close to the 2024 season opener, but they got those deals done. MORE: Baker Mayfield isn't like other quarterbacks But the next biggest priority should always have been Parsons, and somehow it has reached this point. Maybe it's not the point of no return, but it's certainly the point of quite the concern. Parsons' statement on social media was too long and too detailed for this to be a petty move. There's real feeling here, and it's not obvious that the Cowboys can win out here. It has the potential to be a franchise-defining outcome in Dallas, and it's been moving toward this for a while. Raiders tie Seahawks 23-23 in Pete Carroll's Seattle return

SEATTLE (AP) — Pete Carroll's Seattle return ended without a winner when Jalan Gaines blocked Daniel Carlson's 55-yard field-goal try for Las Vegas as time expired, leaving the Raiders and Seahawks tied at 23 on Thursday night. The 73-year-old Carroll, coaching his first preseason game with the Raiders, was narrowly denied the victory in his return to Seattle, where he led the Seahawks to some of their highest moments. The Raiders did lead a late comeback to secure the tie, with Carlson kicking a 51-yard field goal with about a minute left. It was the third field goal of the game for Carlson, who had a long of 56 yards. He also missed a 55-yarder to end the first half. Carroll coached the Seahawks for 14 years, going 137-89-1 and putting together double-digit victories eight times over a nine-year stretch. He led Seattle to its only Super Bowl victory in 2013. Carroll showed the energetic, outgoing personality he was known for in Seattle before the game, talking with many Seahawks players during warmups. Raiders starting quarterback Geno Smith, who was Seattle's starter the past three seasons, played the opening series for Las Vegas along with most of the offensive starters. Smith completed one of his three passes for 15 yards before making way for Aiden O'Connell, who played into the fourth quarter. O'Connell led all passers, going 18 for 30 for 205 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Most of the Seahawks starters didn't play, including quarterback Sam Darnold, running back Kenneth Walker III and wide receivers Cooper Kupp and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Drew Lock opened the game at quarterback for Seattle and played the first half, going 12 for 22 for 147 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Rookie Jalen Milroe, the Seahawks' third-round draft pick, came on for the second half, going 6 for 10 for 61 yards. The Seahawks opened the scoring with a 24-yard touchdown run by George Holani in the final minute of the first quarter, and Lock threw a 10-yard touchdown to Tory Horton in the second quarter, giving the Seahawks a 13-3 lead after the extra point was blocked. Las Vegas got in the end zone for the first time in the third quarter, as O'Connell found Dylan Laube for a 6-yard touchdown pass. Undrafted rookie Jacardia Wright had a 1-yard touchdown run with nine minutes left in the fourth quarter for Seattle. Raiders rookie Cam Miller — the former North Dakota State star — came on at quarterback for the first time in the fourth quarter, and promptly got on the highlight reel with a deep 41-yard touchdown pass to Shedrick Jackson. Big celebrations Seattle had a two interceptions in the second quarter off O'Connell. Josh Jobe got the first on a badly underthrown deep ball and had a 38-yard return. The second came when Nehemiah Pritchett jumped a route and led to a 48-yard field goal by Jason Myers. Beast mode Former running back Marshawn Lynch, who played for both the Seahawks and Raiders, was on the sideline in new role. Lynch was a credentialed photographer for the game, wearing an official vest and taking pictures. He also got a little into the action, as Holani bumped into Lynch after running past the back of the end zone on his touchdown. Up next Raiders: Host San Francisco on Saturday, Aug. 16. Seahawks: Host Kansas City on Friday, Aug. 15. ___ AP NFL: Daimon Eklund, The Associated Press

Milroe's first Seahawks drive

Catch up on our live coverage and reaction, with the NFL preseason schedule up and running Getty Images Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson dislocated the pinky finger on his throwing hand as the opening week of the NFL preseason began tonight. Baltimore beat Indianapolis 24-16, with Ravens wideout LaJohntay Wester's 87-yard punt return touchdown the play of the night. Richardson left the game early in the first quarter after David Ojabo's blind-side sack, with head coach Shane Steichen calling the quarterback 'day-to-day' afterward. Philadelphia secured a 34-27 win over Cincinnati in a game that saw two touchdown passes each for Joe Burrow and Tanner McKee. Finally, Daniel Carlson's 51-yard field goal capped Las Vegas' comeback to secure a 23-23 tie with Seattle in Pete Carroll's return to Lumen field, wrapping up the Thursday action. Three more games will take place Friday night. Share your thoughts: live@ Q3 12:39 - Seahawks 16, Raiders 3 Some promising signs from Jalen Milroe in the read-option game, but his first drive under center for the Seahawks stalls out due in part to an offensive holding penalty. Milroe is lucky to escape without an interception on a risky pass on third-and-14. Imagn Images Marshawn Lynch has made his way up to the Seahawks' TV booth, and he's about to be fitted with a headset... Between him, Mike Robinson and Michael Bennett, we're in for some comedy from the former Seahawks teammates. Q3 15:00 - Seahawks 16, Raiders 3 ...and rookie quarterback Jalen Milroe is in the game! Time to see what Klint Kubiak has cooked up for the athletic former Alabama star. Getty Images The Raiders have 23 yards rushing on 9 carries. Aidan O'Connell has thrown two interceptions. Seattle is averaging 5.5 yards per carry on running back runs. Pete Carroll probably in there plowing through a pack of gum at halftime. Don't tell these Seahawks diehards that it's still only early August. It's not an uncommon sight to see a running back collide with a photographer on the sidelines. But it's not every day that the photographer has more experience rushing for touchdowns than the running back.... Getty Images Raiders looked like a team that haven't had a live tackling practice yet and practiced tackling bags all training camp. Getty Images HALFTIME - Seahawks 16, Raiders 3 A badly shanked 55-yard field goal try from Dylan Carlson pretty much sums up that first half for the Raiders. Ugly stuff to begin the Pete Carroll era in Las Vegas. Some good rushes in the 1st half by Tyreke Smith. He had the pressure that forced an intentional grounding penalty and just wiped away a big gain there by drawing a holding call off the edge. And speaking of Marshawn Lynch's sideline antics tonight... Getty Images The Seahawks' local broadcast team, Kate Scott and Mike Robinson, just said Marshawn Lynch — who is on the sideline as a credentialed photographer — is trying to FaceTime them during the final two minutes of the first half. Scott and Robinson declined to answer, focusing instead on the broadcast. Q2 1:42 - Seahawks 16, Raiders 3 A nice bounce-back from Jason Myers there. The Seahawks' offense is set up deep in Raiders territory after that interception and looking to tack on some more before halftime. Consider Michael Bennett anti-AI as he rails against the new virtual measurement system that the NFL is implementing. In all seriousness, the Seahawks legend is a great addition to this local Seattle broadcast. Q2 4:55 - Seahawks 13, Raiders 3 This time it's safety Nehemiah Pritchett laying back and picking off Aidan O'Connell. Once again, the Seahawks are flagged for the team's starters, not in full uniform, running onto the field off the bench to celebrate! Getty Images Seattle is averaging 6.3 yards per play and has converted 75 percent of its third downs. Not good for the Raiders defense. Getty Images Q2 6:37 - Seahawks 13, Raiders 3 Really nice job from two rookies on that play. Running back Damien Martinez splits out wide and draws the secondary deep, giving Drew Lock space to hit Tory Horton on a short stick route. Horton then spins away from a defender — another missed tackle for the Raiders' defense in an ugly first half — and scampers into the end zone for his first NFL touchdown! It's deserved for the training camp standout. However, the Seahawks miss the ensuing extra point. Share your thoughts: live@ Imagn Images Like Aidan O'Connell, Drew Lock was once in the running for Seahawks starting quarterback but is now firmly entrenched as a backup in his second stint in Seattle. He had a mixed bag while getting the start with Sam Darnold watching from the sidelines. Lock went 12-for-22 with 147 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Jalen Milroe was also inconsistent in his first taste of NFL game action, but showed flashes of athleticism that made him such a tantalizing NFL prospect. The rookie quarterback went 6-for-10 passing with 61 yards and added 38 yards on three carries with his legs. Aidan O'Connell is no longer in the running for the Raiders' starting quarterback job, but he saw the majority of snaps for Las Vegas tonight after taking over for starter Geno Smith following the Raiders' first offensive series. (Smith went 1-for-3 with 15 passing yards). O'Connell scuffled quite a bit against, largely, the Seahawks' backups before finding his footing a bit more in the second half as Seattle went deeper into its depth chart. Still, going 18-for-30 with 205 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions isn't exactly going to leave anyone too thrilled at his performance tonight — especially after Cam Miller's sterling debut that Tashan Reed chronicled below. Getty Images Not much going for Ashton Jeanty in his first taste of NFL action. The 2024 Heisman Trophy runner-up and No. 6 overall pick in last April's draft had -1 yards on three carries before being removed from the game early along with the rest of the Raiders' projected offensive starters. Imagn Images Close observers of Seahawks training camp probably aren't surprised that Tory Horton impressed in his first taste of NFL game action. The fifth-round rookie coming off a standout college career at Colorado State had 31 yards and a touchdown in three receptions. Imagn Images George Holani, who once started ahead of Ashton Jeanty at Boise State and spent last year on the Seahawks' practice squad, was the biggest standout of the night for Seattle. He had seven carries for 61 yards and a touchdown — all in the first quarter. Three of those carries went for 20 yards or more. Rookie quarterback Cam Miller was impressive in first in-game action. His first drive ended in a beautiful touchdown bomb. His next resulted in a game-tying field goal. And then his last one was good enough to get them in range for a game-winning attempt. Although the kick was blocked, Miller's performance still stood out. The Raiders tie with the Seahawks at 23 in their preseason opener. It wasn't the most inspiring effort, but they finished strong in the second half after coming out flat to start the game. That fight they displayed was the biggest positive takeaway while the most significant concern has to be how leaky the defense looked, but it's important to remember that there's still plenty of time to go before Week 1 arrives. FINAL - Raiders 26, Seahawks 23 Some really, really impressive fight from the second and third stringers to claw back in this one, but Dylan Carlson's game-winning kick attempt is blocked! Pete Carroll can only grimace in frustration on the sideline as he watches the chance to beat his old team fall away. Q4 0:14 - Raiders 23, Seahawks 23 Cam Miller to Shedrick Jackson again! Raiders are down to the Seahawks' 39-yard line, well in field-goal range... Q4 0:35 - Raiders 23, Seahawks 23 Now it's Jalen Milroe's turn to get sacked, forcing a punt from deep in Seahawks territory. Can the Raiders complete the comeback?! Q4 1:12 - Raiders 23, Seahawks 23 Don't worry, folks — there are no overtimes in preseason. But Jalen Milroe and the Seahawks will still have 72 seconds to attempt a game-winning drive after Dylan Carlson nails the game-tying field goal for the Raiders. Q4 1:22 - Seahawks 23, Raiders 20 HUGE sack from Connor O'Toole, and the Raiders have to take a timeout. That might change some things for Las Vegas... Pete Carroll plays for the tie and sends out Dylan Carlson... Q4 2:00 - Seahawks 23, Raiders 20 This time it's Pete Carroll and Chip Kelly who gamble an fourth down, and Cam Miller delivers on a delayed quarterback run! The Raiders are down to the Seahawks' 31-yard line — can they tie or take the lead? Good ol' 4th-down rollout there that doesn't end up working. Need to see a replay but wonder if Jalen Milroe may have gotten the first by just taking off. Q4 4:12 - Seahawks 23, Raiders 20 A major gamble by Mike Macdonald and Klint Kubiak backfires! They go for it on fourth-and-1 and come up short, as Jalen Milroe opts to pass on a bootleg option play but can't thread the needle downfield. The Raiders now get the ball back near midfield with just over four minutes left and the chance to take the lead... Q4 5:24 - Seahawks 23, Raiders 20 Jalen Milroe's legs and athleticism are as advertised! He keeps the ball on a read-option deep in the Seahawks' on territory and scampers over 25 yards for a big gain. The Seahawks bench loves it. Rookie quarterback Cam Miller ended his first NFL drive with a highlight. After freezing the defense with a pump fake, he threw a perfect pass to receiver Shedrick Jackson for a 41-yard touchdown. Q4 7:27 - Seahawks 23, Raiders 20 WOW, an impressive recovery from Cam Miller after the Raiders were starting to go backward at midfield. Miller hits Shedrick Jackson on a beautiful sluggo route down the sideline for a 41-yard touchdown! Getty Images Q4 8:50 - Seahawks 23, Raiders 13 Rookie Cam Miller finally takes over for Aidan O'Connell at quarterback. But it's the Raiders running backs who are showing off, as Dylan Laube and Chris Collier both have big gains this drive to get Las Vegas deep into Seattle territory. Page 3
