Eagles ‘Vulnerable' in Rising NFC East Predicts NFL.com

Yahoo19-05-2025
The Philadelphia Eagles were the last team to repeat as NFC East champions when they wore the crown from 2001-2004. Since then, no team has won the division in back-to-back seasons.
Based on offseason activity, NFL.com has compiled a ranking of the teams most vulnerable to having their spot atop the division taken this season.

Ranked third-most in danger are the Philadelphia Eagles ... and not just because the pattern of NFC East finishes.
"... Philadelphia could be in a dogfight to hold on to the crown again this season," wrote Judy Battista.
While all three other teams improved in some capacity this offseason, many believe the Washington Commanders are the ones knocking on the door to break through for their first division championship since 2020.
"The Commanders are a team on a very rapid rise, and whatever unsteadiness Jayden Daniels showed in his rookie season should be improved in 2025, especially because he will be behind an improved offensive line and have Deebo Samuel to target in addition to Terry McLaurin."

Washington's offense is geared up to be even more explosive than it was last season under Offensive Rookie of the Year quarterback Jayden Daniels. Last season, the rookie QB powered his team to the fifth-highest points per game average in the NFL at 28.5.
Daniels will now be more comfortable than ever and have a greater supporting cast to rely on if he falls into an unexpected sophomore slump.
This could be scary for the Philly defense to prepare for.
The Eagles were - and still are - one of the deepest rosters in the NFL, but it's hard to ignore some of the depth they lost this offseason, especially on defense. They saw five defensive backs and a collection of contributors on the defensive line depart in free agency.

However, Philadelphia will bring back the majority of their offensive firepower, lead by quarterback Jalen Hurts and Offensive Player of the Year running back Saquon Barkley. If they all stay healthy, Nick Sirianni's offense will be prepared to get into high-scoring affairs if that's what it takes to win.
The Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants also made noteworthy moves this offseason to strengthen their chances. However, their rosters currently feature more questions than answers in how it will all work on the field.
The Commanders have shown they have what it takes. They enjoyed a taste of success last season, making an impressive run to meet the Eagles in the NFC championship game.
They'll be out for even more in 2025.

The Eagles should be just as motivated to reclaim the East and make history as the first team to do so in two decades.
Philly will get their first crack at the division when they take on Dallas in Week 1 on Thursday Sept. 4.

Another analyst steps up to defend Jalen Hurts after Cam Newton's harsh critique

Another established voice come to Jalen Hurts defense after cam Newton's verbal assault. No one loved beef like the late, great 'Drama King,' D.J. Kay Slay. If things were quiet and there wasn't any, he'd create some. If he were here, he'd be having a field day with the Jalen Hurts narratives if he hadn't passed on after a COVID-19 contraction in 2022. This seemed like a mere opinion a couple of years ago. Still, it's hard to think of a starting quarterback who is marginalized and disrespected more often than the Philadelphia Eagles starter. All he does is win. All people do is complain. If you only read the narratives, you'd think he was Trevor Lawrence or Justin Herbert... But, that probably doesn't make the point we're trying to communicate because people keep telling us those two are better players. Recently, Cam Newton joined the Jalen Hurts onslaught. That was surprising. If anyone joined Hurt's side, we would have assumed it would have been him, but no dice. Hurts found some support as Newton was criticized for his statements. The 2015 NFL MVP didn't waver. He doubled down. Most thought training camp would shift the focus away from this, but an established voice joined the discussion. And, he's backing Hurts. Chase Senior is an analyst and content creator over at Chat Sports. He hosts Eagles Now and the 49ers Report. He joined in on the Newton vs. Hurts discussion and did Philadelphia sports fans proud. We tried to play devil's advocate and offer a varying opinion just for kicks after that one, but we can't. Senior hit the nail on the head there. That sound you hear is Newton's jaw hitting the floor. Well done, Mr. Senior. There's seemingly nothing left to add after that level of excellence. That being said, we get back to the Eagles training camp news.

August 5th Revealed as David Robertson's Debut Date for Phillies

August 5th Revealed as David Robertson's Debut Date for Phillies originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's tough to say that the Philadelphia Phillies made the perfect decision when they went out and signed David Robertson on Sunday night. However, there's a reason why many contenders around the league were interested in the veteran's service. Robertson has already pitched in Philadelphia throughout his career and was staying ready during the early stages of the year. It's unfortunate that he didn't latch onto a team until the end of July, but it isn't anything that the Phillies can be too worried about. Ultimately, they saw his workout up in the Northeast, and they liked what they saw. He's taken the deal, and the expectation is for him to join the big league roster sooner rather than later. According to Todd Zolecki of Robertson is expected to join the Phillies on August 5, which is the earliest possible date. 'David Robertson expects to pitch for Triple-A this week. The earliest he can join the Phillies is Aug. 5, which is the expectation,' he wrote. Throughout his career, Robertson has been utilized in high-leverage situations, particularly for the New York Yankees. He pitched with the Phillies during the 2019 and 2022 campaigns, posting a 2.70 ERA in 22 outings in 2022. During the 2024 campaign for the Texas Rangers, he posted a 3.00 ERA. For how cheap the Phillies got him for, even if he's used as strictly a setup man throughout the later stages of the campaign, he'll give the Phillies some much-needed depth as they head into the postseason. Jhoan Duran trade grades: Breaking down Phillies-Twins deal

Dave Dombrowski finally did it. Just ahead of Major League Baseball's trade deadline day, the Philadelphia Phillies' president of baseball operations made a big splash by landing one of the top closers on the market — Jhoan Duran from the Minnesota Twins for Mick Abel and Eduardo Tait. The move by the Phillies is a big one with the team in a "win now" stage with Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, Zack Wheeler, J.T. Realmuto and Kyle Schwarber towards the end of their primes or on expiring contracts. Here's how we're grading the Jhoan Duran trade from the Twins to the Phillies: REQUIRED READING: MLB trade deadline rumors: Latest news and updates from around baseball Jhoan Duran trade details Phillies receive: RHP Johan Duran Twins receive: RHP Mick Abel, C Eduardo Tait The Phillies acquired star right-handed closer Johan Duran from the Twins for prospects Mick Abel and Eduardo Tait. Jhoan Duran trade grades Phillies: A Going into this week, it was no secret that the Phillies needed to bolster their bullpen in a big way. Their big offseason bullpen move of signing Jordan Romano (one year, $8.5 million) hasn't worked out and star left-handed reliever Jose Alvarado is currently serving an 80-game suspension after testing positive for PEDs. Alvarado is not eligible for the postseason. When the reliever market began to heat up on Wednesday, reports began to surface that the Phillies would likely need to give up their No. 1 prospect (Andrew Painter) in addition to other top prospects in a package for a high-end reliever like Duran. The odds of Dombrowski landing a reliever seemingly started to dwindle. He confirmed to reporters in Chicago after the Phillies' loss to the White Sox that the team wasn't going to trade Painter. Dombrowski then made a big acquisition while not having to give up Painter, who is throwing in Triple-A right now and working his way back from Tommy John surgery. Got to give Dombrowski credit for this. Landing a reliever like Duran is a big get for the Phillies, whose bullpen is ranked No. 24 in MLB with a 4.33 ERA. At 27 years old, Duran is also under team control for an additional two full seasons, which aligns with their current window with Harper, Wheeler and others. One of the top relievers on the market, Duran's fastball is electric and averages 100.2 mph, which will certainly work late in games for manager Rob Thomson. In four seasons with the Twins, Duran has posted a 2.47 ERA and 74 saves. That, too, will play for the Phillies, who haven't had a surefire, lockdown closer since Jonathan Papelbon. The Phillies have their closer of the future. Not a bad way to go into Thursday's trade deadline for Dombrowski and his staff. "We would not have paid this price for a rental," Dombrowki told reporters in Chicago after the Phillies officially announced the trade. Enough said by the future Hall of Famer. Twins: B+ Though the Twins didn't get a prospect of Painter's caliber back for Duran, Minnesota still did rather well in its return for the closer. Headlining the package for the Twins is Abel, a former first-round draft pick by the Phillies in 2015 who has pitched at the major league level this season. Called up on May 18 to fill the spot in the rotation for an injured Aaron Nola, Abel posted a 2-2 record with a 5.04 ERA across six starts and 25 innings pitched. Abel, the Phillies' No. 6-ranked prospect, struggled over his final starts, which ultimately led to him being optioned back to Triple-A. Abel specifically struggled with his command, as he gave up nine runs and five walks in his final two outings vs. the Mets and Padres. Though he will be sent to Triple-A, he is a major league-ready arm for the Twins, should they have a need in the coming days and weeks. Then there is Tait, who is the first Top 100 Prospect traded at the deadline since 2023 and the highest-ranked since 2022. At 18 years old and playing as high as Single-A, Tait is viewed more as a project prospect. He does possess some power and has a grade score of 60 for his arm, according to MLB Pipeline.
