JD Vance: US vice-president to meet Modi in Delhi amid tariff tensions
US Vice-President JD Vance has arrived in the Indian capital where he is due to hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi amid global trade tensions sparked by Washington's tariff policies. The talks are likely to focus on fast tracking a much-awaited bilateral trade deal between the two countries.Vance is also expected to go on a sightseeing tour of Agra and Jaipur with his family. His visit comes as countries across the world rush to negotiate a trade deal before US President Donald Trump's 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs ends on 9 July.
"The two sides will also exchange views on regional and global developments of mutual interest," India's foreign ministry said ahead of Vance's visit. The vice-president is accompanied by his children and wife Usha Vance whose parents migrated to the US from the southern state of Andhra Pradesh. After his arrival in Delhi on Monday morning, Vance visited the Akshardham temple complex in Delhi. He is due to meet Modi for formal talks later in the day and Modi is to host Vance for dinner in the evening. The visit comes amid escalating trade tensions between Washington and several countries after Trump announced steep reciprocal tariffs on them. Trump, who has repeatedly called Delhi a tariff abuser, had announced a tariff of 27% on India before he temporarily paused it on 9 April.India has already slashed tariffs on some US goods, with further cuts expected as the balance of trade is still stacked heavily in favour of Delhi, which enjoys a $45bn trade surplus.India's average tariffs of around 12% are also significantly higher than the US's 2%.Until recently, the US was India's largest trading partner, with bilateral trade reaching $190bn (£144bn).Prime Minister Modi was among the first leaders to meet Trump after his inauguration. Modi hailed a "mega partnership" with the United States following his meeting with the president.Trump and Modi set an ambitious target to more than double bilateral trade to $500bn, as the two leaders announced a deal for India to import more from America, including oil and gas.Weeks later, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard visited India, followed by a US delegation led by Assistant Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch.Vance's India tour is also seen as significant as Trump is likely to visit the country later this year for the Quad summit, which will also host leaders of Australia and Japan.Speaking about Vance's engagements in India, Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal last week said Delhi was "very positive that the visit will give a further boost to our bilateral ties".Follow BBC News India on Instagram, YouTube, X and Facebook

Martin Zubimendi raises doubt over £50m Arsenal transfer after medical claim
Martin Zubimendi was reportedly due to undergo a medical with Arsenal last week (Getty) Martin Zubimendi has raised doubt over his transfer to Arsenal this summer and has refused to rule out the possibility of staying at Real Sociedad. The 26-year-old came close to joining Liverpool last year before he opted to remain with his boyhood club. Arsenal, meanwhile, have been long-term admirers of the Spain international and it's understood that the club's hierarchy have been confident of signing the midfielder, who has a €60 million (£50.5m) release clause. Last week, it was reported that Zubimendi was due to undergo a medical with Arsenal before finalising his move to Mikel Arteta's side. But in an interview with Radio Nacional de Espana on Tuesday, Zubimendi said his future is undecided when asked if there is a chance he could stay another season at Real Sociedad. 'Of course there are options, but it's true that it seems like it's going to be a different, long summer, and I don't know how it will end,' Zubimendi said. Martin Zubimendi has refused to rule out the prospect of staying with Real Sociedad (Getty) 'I don't think thinking about it right now is my priority. I'm here with the national team, which I think is already quite demanding, and if I have to say something, then I will.' After reports emerged claiming that Zubimendi was undergoing a medical with Arsenal, the midfielder uploaded a picture from a beach in San Sebastian on his Instagram account. 'It's an example of what surrounds football,' Zubimendi said. 'Many times I wake up in the morning and read things that I didn't know I had done. That was a clear example. More Trending 'It's true that I don't take it very seriously, but anyway, I uploaded those photos to emphasise a little that it wasn't exactly the reality that was happening.' Zubimendi was also asked about potentially reuniting with Xabi Alonso at Real Madrid having already played under him with Real Sociedad B. 'I have always said that he was my idol and that for me it was lucky that he was able to coach me in the reserve team in a very important year,' the midfielder said. 'The following year I was already in the first team and, well, I don't like to talk about those hypotheses, I prefer to talk about the present, because I also think that it would be disrespectful to answer from the national team training camp and before facing such an important competition.' "They were not suggesting us at one point to go back at all, to maybe find a place to sleep somewhere around here for a night, because at that point it was already past midnight and some gas bombs and cars under fire and stuff happening on the street that was really dangerous. "Everything around our hotel, which is close to Arc de Triomphe. "So in the end we talked. We waited for a bit, and then we decided to go."
