Napoli crowned Serie A champions; Inter miss out
*McTominay and Lukaku secure title for Napoli
*Napoli celebrate fourth Serie A crown
*Manager Conte wins Scudetto with third different team
NAPLES, Italy: Napoli secured the Serie A title in style with a dominant 2-0 home win over Cagliari on Friday thanks to goals from Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku.
Napoli celebrated their second Italian crown in three years - and fourth overall - after a thrilling battle with Inter whose 2-0 win at Como thanks to goals from Stefan de Vrij and Joaquin Correa left them one point adrift of their rivals.
McTominay opened the scoring for Napoli three minutes before the break with a stunning bicycle kick from Matteo Politano's cross, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
Lukaku doubled the lead six minutes after the restart by latching on to a long ball, shrugging off a defender and calmly finishing past Cagliari keeper Alen Sherri.
The rest of the match turned into a celebration at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium as flares and smoke filled the pitch before the final whistle blew and fireworks lit up the Naples sky. For manager Antonio Conte, the victory represented another milestone in his career, securing the Serie A title with a third different club, having previously achieved the feat with Juventus and Inter.
"It happened again, and it's something wonderful. When we got to the stadium, it was honestly difficult to get in, as I don't know how many people were there. I had a slight thought, if we let these people down, it'd be something we carried with us for a long time," he told reporters. Conte was absent from the touchline for the final match due to suspension, but Napoli completed their task.
"All the credit goes to the boys. Winning in Naples is difficult, these boys are doing it for the second time in two years," he said. "They are serious boys, you don't leave in a team that always plays to win."
In front of a buzzing crowd brimming with nerves, Napoli flew out of the blocks as Giacomo Raspadori pounced on a rebound from a corner and drilled a low shot inches wide. Two minutes later, a teasing cross floated just too high for Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa to meet cleanly with a free header much to the chagrin of the home crowd. The chances kept coming as a blistering Napoli counter sent Raspadori through, only for Sherri to deny him smartly before Politano blasted the rebound over.
The Albanian keeper played the party spoiler in most of the first half, pulling off a string of stunning saves that left Napoli's players frustrated. The mood dipped around the 20th minute as word spread that Inter had taken the lead in Como, sapping the energy from the stands and halting Napoli's momentum along with the match's intensity. Once McTominay had worked his magic, however, Napoli never looked back. "It is the well-deserved victory of an extraordinary team and a city that never stops dreaming, fighting and loving," Naples mayor Gaetano Manfredi wrote on X. — Reuters

Man City sign AC Milan midfielder Reijnders
LONDON: Manchester City on Wednesday announced the signing of Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan for a reported fee of £46.3 million ($62.4 million), with the midfielder eligible to play in the Club World Cup. The Dutch international midfielder, City's fourth signing of the week, said he was "ecstatic" to be signing for Pep Guardiola's side. The club announced deals for midfielder Rayan Cherki from Lyon and Chelsea's third-choice goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli on Tuesday while left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri joined from Wolves on Monday. Reijnders, 26, joined AC Milan from AZ Alkmaar in 2023 and scored 15 goals for the Italian club in 2024/25. He will bolster Guardiola's midfield options following the departure of Kevin De Bruyne. "I am ecstatic to be signing for Manchester City," said Reijnders, who has penned a five-year deal. "City are one of the biggest teams in the world, with the best coach, world-class players and outstanding facilities." After four consecutive Premier League titles, City finished a distant third last season and bowed out of the Champions League early. City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak admitted the club "probably should have been more aggressive" in the transfer market ahead of the 2024/25 campaign. The club's latest transfer activity continues an overhaul of the squad that began with the January signings of Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis. City's director of football Hugo Viana said: "We are very happy that Tijjani has joined us and we're excited for him to join Pep's squad. "He arrives here with extensive top-level experience in Europe, both at club level as well as on the international stage with the Netherlands. "Tijjani adds extra energy, composure and creativity to our midfield and working with Pep and our coaches will only see him go from strength to strength." Guardiola's men will travel to the expanded 32-team Club World Cup as defending champions after winning the competition under its previous guise in Saudi Arabia two years ago. They open their campaign against Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia on June 18. — AFP

Milan grabs Dauphine stage victory and overall lead
ISSOIRE, France: Hulking Italian sprinter Jonathan Milan surged away from the pack to win the second stage of the Criterium de Dauphine in Issoire on Monday to take the overall lead from Tadej Pogacar. The 1.93m (6-foot-4) 87kg Milan had to battle to keep up on a hilly 204.6km run through central France from Premilhat. When the pack hit the home straight, he rocketed away from his rivals to collect a 10-second victory bonus and the yellow jersey. "That was really tough," said Milan. "I was dropped at one point and I was really on the limit, but I have to say thanks to my teammates because they brought me back and guided me until the last metres." Briton Fred Wright was second and Dutchman Mathieu van der Poel third. Pogacar and his main rivals for overall victory, both in the Criterium and the Tour de France, Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel, rolled home safely in the main pack just behind Mlan. Pogacar, who collected a 10-second bonus on Sunday, has the same overall time as Mian, but braked hard in the final metres to surrender places and hand the Italian the tie-break edge and the daily media responsibilities that go with the yellow jersey. The eight-day race, with four hilly stages, a time trial and three final days in the Alps, has attracted an A-list roster of 154 riders from 22 teams. It offers Tour de France contenders a chance to hone their form and gain a psychological edge before the main event starts on July 5. Pogacar, who won his third Tour de France last year ending Vingegaard's two-year reign, had struck the first blow the previous day, edging the Dane to take the opening stage and the overall lead. On Monday, support riders for Pogacar's Team UAE and Vingegaard's Visma spent much of the stage jostling, sometimes angrily, for position at the front of the pack. The stage was briefly animated when local-boy Romain Bardet, riding the final race of his 14-year professional career, launched an attack on the last small climb just before a corner where his fan club was waiting with a huge banner. The 34-year-old was caught with 10 kilometres to go as Milan's Lidl-Trek team took control. The Frenchman will have another chance on Tuesday when stage three starts from his home town Brioude for a hilly 207.2km run to Charantonnay. — AFP

Inter Milan hire Chivu as new coach
MILAN: Inter Milan have chosen Cristian Chivu to lead the Serie A club into a new era, confirming the former Romania defender as Simone Inzaghi's replacement ahead of the upcoming Club World Cup. "Inter Milan is pleased to welcome Cristian Chivu as the new head coach of the first team. The coach has signed a contract with Inter until 30 June 2027," Inter said in a statement. Still reeling from humiliation at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final, Inter have gambled on novice Chivu after failing to get Cesc Fabregas from Como. Chivu has reportedly agreed a two-year contract with Inter worth 2.5 million euros ($2.85 million) a season, taking charge of one of Europe's biggest clubs only a few months after beginning his senior coaching career with Parma. Parma confirmed Chivu's departure earlier on Monday, setting up his arrival at Inter where he won three Serie A titles and the 2010 Champions League as a player. The 44-year-old replaced Fabio Pechia in February and guided Parma to Serie A safety in his first job in football of any form since leaving Inter's youth set-up last summer. "I thank the club, staff, players and fans for having believed in me and our project," said Chivu on Instagram. "Together we overcame obstacles and wrote a page (in Parma's history) which will remain in my heart." Chivu's first match in charge of Inter will be against Monterrey in the Club World Cup next week, in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. He will lead a group of players who looked dead on their feet during their 5-0 hammering against PSG in the Champions League final late last month. Inzaghi left Inter in the wake of the Italians' thumping in Munich, taking the job at Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal who are also taking part in the Club World Cup. — AFP
