ITV Downton Abbey star teams up with Doctor Who favourite for new detective mystery
A fresh detective mystery series has been commissioned by Channel 5, with a beloved Downton Abbey favourite confirmed to headline the upcoming drama.
The exciting news, revealed on July 21, forms part of the broadcaster 's ambitious strategy to develop original programming whilst bringing back established favourites, as the network expands its drama portfolio.
Compelling crime dramas and fresh mysteries feature prominently in the channel's forthcoming slate, with Cooper and Fry among the newly announced projects.
Spanning four feature-length episodes, the series draws inspiration from Stephen Booth's bestselling literary works.
Four early novels are being brought to screen: Black Dog, Dying to Sin, Blind To the Bones and Dancing with the Virgins, reports the Express.
Robert James-Collier, recognised for his roles in Downton Abbey and The Inheritance, will star alongside Mandip Gill, celebrated for her appearances in Doctor Who and Suspicion, in the leading roles.
The pair will embody Ben Cooper and Diane Fry, two contrasting young investigators forced to collaborate whilst tackling a series of puzzling fatalities, learning to unite their different approaches to achieve success.
Located in the stunning Peak District, the drama follows Ben and Diane as they develop a "unique friendship" with their personal circumstances becoming increasingly entangled, though the journey "won't always be easy".
Clapperboard produces the series in partnership with STUDIO TF1, who also handle distribution, following a commission from Paul Testar, Commissioning Editor at Channel 5.
Audiences will instantly recognise Robert James-Collier from his roles as the scheming Thomas Barrow in Downton Abbey, the charming Liam Connor in Coronation Street, and the dedicated Martin Evershed in Ackley Bridge.
On the other hand, Mandip Gill is celebrated for her portrayal of Phoebe McQueen in Hollyoaks, the adventurous Yasmin Khan in Doctor Who, and the intriguing Sonia Chopra in Suspicion.

Pointing towards what appears to be torn up stone slabs in the ground, Amanda says: 'You might ask yourself, 'What has happened there?' I'll tell you what has happened there. 'At some point in the last couple of days, probably in the middle of the night, somebody has come to these pens on the border between Cumbria and Yorkshire, and they have come into these beautiful pens that have stood here for centuries. 'And they have dug up and taken the flags out of the floor. Can you imagine, this floor has stood the test of time. It has been here for hundreds of years.' Amanda stressed that the site was one of great historical importance and remains in use to this day. 'This isn't a place that isn't used,' she continued. 'This is a place that has got history.' 'Look. See the beautiful cobbles, see how this is maintained and looked after. This is a little building where the shepherds and farmers in our area actually bring our sheep, when we've gathered them in and actually worked in them and put strays in here. 'But at some point over the last couple of days, somebody has taken it upon themselves to desecrate it, whether they had a job for these flags or whether they just got them because they thought nobody was using this place. 'I think that absolutely stinks, it's our heritage, it's an ancient, ancient place, and I don't see that there's any need to do that kind of thing.' Antiques Roadshow expert Hilary Kay met a guest whose father worked on the Titanic and survived the sinking of the vessel Antiques Roadshow's Hilary Kay had an eye-opening encounter with guests whose father, Sidney Daniels, was employed as a plate washer on the Titanic at the age of just 18. Sidney was one of the survivors of the tragic sinking and his offspring brought along a letter he penned to the beloved BBC programme. Recalling the fateful night, his daughter stated: "It was a Sunday, he was sound asleep, there was a banging and shouting and it was the night watchman. They were all a bit bleary-eyed because at first they thought it was a drill. "It wasn't until he got up on deck, there were hardly any people around at first and then officers came and turned to him and said, 'Go to these cabins'." She then explained how Sidney had been tasked with waking sleeping guests on the ship, as she went on: "Of course it was hard to wake people, they were asleep. Some reacted in different ways. One or two said 'What does this young man know? He's 18, the boat is unsinkable, we're not going up on deck'. "Others were saying, 'We've got children, they're going to get a chill if they go up on deck'. So he helped the children with the lifejackets and ushered them up on deck." Hilary chimed in on the episode which was re-aired on Sunday night: "You can imagine the scene of chaos and despair because people realised there weren't enough lifeboats." Sidney's son replied: "That was his job, to try and get people into the lifeboats and the water was rising all of the time. When all the lifeboats had gone, the water was up around his knees and he thought, 'It's time to go'. "So he dived off the side of the boat, swam away from it, came to a lifebelt and to my Dad's mind, it was too close to the boat, he was afraid when the boat went down, the suction would take them down so he said to this chap, 'It's no good here, let's swim away'. "Apparently this chap followed him and they just kept swimming. He said he saw a star in the sky which he thought was his mother and swam towards this star and eventually came to this life raft which was upside down and managed to cling onto that." "When he was on there, he said, 'I'm tired, I want to go to sleep,' and the chap next to him said, 'Don't go to sleep lad, if you do, it will be your last'. "So they sat there singing hymns trying to pass the time away." The duo had brought along a letter which had remained tucked inside Sidney's uniform pocket when he leapt from the Titanic, the Express reports. Hillary, clearly stunned by the letter, began to speak about the artefact's significance and value: "It's an extraordinary item and anything related to Titanic has this extraordinary effect on people. It is an extraordinary moment to behold something which is so linked into an extraordinary moment in history." She estimated its worth, saying: "We're talking about around £10,000, is the realistic value."

Channel 5 viewers were not impressed with the Dissont family on this week's episode of Rich Holiday, Poor Holiday as they branded them 'boring' and 'pretentious' Rich Holiday, Poor Holiday returned to Channel 5 on Sunday with a new series featuring strangers from opposite ends of the wealth spectrum embarking on two vastly different holidays. However, just minutes into the show, one family sparked outrage among viewers as they outlined their expectations for a luxury trip. The families get to live out each other's idea of an ideal holiday, but what is paradise for one family can be hell for another. This episode saw two very different families sharing their unique experiences, with well-off medics and aesthetics practitioners Sam and Andre Dissont and their 14-year-old daughter Cassia first taking the cash-strapped Leaf family to a posh health resort. Gary, Beth, 13-year-old Grace, and eight-year-old Noah were treated to a five-star stay in a Malta hotel - but the activities that the Dissonts had planned were far removed from what the fun-loving Leafs were accustomed to. Upon arriving at the first destination and meeting up, the Dissonts, who regularly splurge £40,000 on a holiday without batting an eyelid, revealed their preference for a healthy lifestyle. They each indulge in a £1,000 session in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber before jetting off. Once on holiday, they adhere to a strict diet, which includes abstaining from alcohol and consuming plenty of fresh food, and also incorporate exercise into their trips, reports the Express. After revealing their dream holiday, the Dissonts invited the Leafs - known for their extravagant holidays - to join them in their health-focused activities. The families embarked on a schedule packed with private tours of historical sites, sushi restaurants, gym sessions and a snorkelling trip to the blue lagoon. While the Leafs seemed somewhat impressed, they concluded that it wasn't worth the money. Meanwhile, viewers at home labelled the wealthy family as "boring". One disgruntled viewer posted on Twitter: "What a boring family. Oxygen chambers, wanting to go on healthy holidays and come back healthier.
