Egypt's Electricity Minister affirms commitment to stable power supply, renewables expansion
Essmat highlighted the ministry's urgent plan to enhance the efficiency of generation, transmission, and distribution systems. This plan, he said, aims to improve quality, maximise returns from existing infrastructure, optimise system operations, address technical and commercial losses, reduce fuel consumption, and ensure a reliable electricity supply. The minister participated in a Senate session discussing reports on the future of energy, renewable energy, the energy mix, and addressing challenges in the electricity sector.
Essmat emphasised the strong support and continuous oversight from the Egyptian leadership for the electricity and renewable energy sector. He noted the state's focus on this vital sector, recognising electricity as the cornerstone of development across various fields, aligning with the sustainable development plan and the goals of the 'New Republic.' He highlighted the complete reconstruction of infrastructure and legislative enhancements. He stressed that every citizen deserves access to reliable electricity service, reflecting the significant investments in infrastructure across all sectors, especially within the electricity sector.
The minister stated that the ministry's work programme, along with its affiliated companies and agencies, is based on optimal economic operation, efficient resource management, maximising returns to improve the quality of electricity supply, and addressing technical and commercial losses. He detailed efforts to enhance the efficiency of existing power plants, modify operational patterns, adhere to maintenance schedules based on international standards, and closely monitor the implementation of new generation capacity to meet growing demand. The peak load of the unified network increased from 34,200 megawatts in 2022/2023 to 38,000 megawatts in 2023/2024, an increase of approximately 8%, and further increases are anticipated for the coming summer, for which preparations are underway.
Essmat described the urgent plan implemented over recent months to improve the quality and stability of electricity supply, enhance services, and upgrade distribution networks nationwide. He emphasised the importance of continuous field presence, direct communication with consumers, accurate data collection, and intensified monitoring and inspection efforts.
He also affirmed the commitment to expanding renewable energy and green hydrogen projects and localising related industries. Egypt's energy strategy aims to increase the contribution of renewable energy to the energy mix to 42% by the end of 2030, reaching 65% by 2040. This includes developing and modernising the grid to accommodate renewable energy integration, collaborating with international consulting firms, and utilising network analysis software, considering optimal economic operation in line with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company's role as grid operator under the new Electricity Law.
Essmat further addressed the ongoing integration of modern technology, governance of the metering system, and service improvement for citizens. This includes projects to develop electricity distribution networks, control centres, replace traditional meters with prepaid and smart meters, and upgrade customer service centres. These initiatives fall under the plan to strengthen and develop the unified national grid. He highlighted the smart meter installation project, energy efficiency improvement projects, and the replacement of traditional meters with prepaid meters, along with efforts to simplify service applications and expand the installation of coded meters. He stressed that citizens deserve reliable service reflecting the sector's advancements while also taking measures to prevent theft, protect the network from illegal loads, and ensure accurate asset inventory for better management and financial resource optimisation.
The minister elaborated on the National Energy Strategy and its executive plans, aiming to position Egypt as a regional energy hub connecting Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, leveraging its strategic location and infrastructure projects. He mentioned existing electricity interconnection projects with neighbouring countries like Sudan, Libya, and Jordan, as well as the ongoing project with Saudi Arabia expected to launch this year. He discussed the shared vision with the European Union for electricity interconnection, highlighting the Egypt-Greece and Egypt-Italy projects as crucial for regional energy integration. These projects promote cross-border clean electricity transfer, supporting sustainable energy needs and grid stability. He added that Egypt is strengthening cooperation with African countries to achieve energy integration, share technical expertise, and support renewable energy projects across the continent to meet the growing energy demand.

Egypt links Ukraine peace efforts to Gaza crisis, urges Israel to accept Hamas-approved deal
Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement announcing that it is closely following recent international efforts aimed at reaching a peaceful settlement for the Ukrainian crisis. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that it values the efforts being made by US President Donald Trump to end the Ukrainian crisis and put a stop to the military operations and the negative repercussions they have caused. Egypt welcomed the US-Russian summit held in Alaska on August 15, as well as the meeting that brought the US President together with his Ukrainian counterpart and a number of European leaders in Washington on August 18. Egypt reaffirms that these efforts are in complete alignment with the Egyptian state's position, which calls for pushing for political and diplomatic solutions to international crises, as there is no military solution to this protracted crisis. This would contribute to establishing security and stability and reviving the comprehensive settlement path on the basis of the two-state solution and relevant international legitimacy resolutions. Egypt renews its readiness to continue its constructive contribution, in cooperation with regional and international parties – particularly the US – to support the paths aimed at achieving international peace and security, out of a keenness to enhance regional and international security and stability.

Israel to give final approval of Gaza occupation plan as Hamas slams 'blatant disregard' for mediation - War on Gaza
The Israeli cabinet is expected on Thursday to give final approval to a plan to occupy Gaza City, Israeli media reported, as the army begins mobilizing some 60,000 reservists for the first stage of the operation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahusaid he has ordered a faster takeover of Gaza than originally planned. His office stated that the timeline for "seizing Hamas's remaining strongholds" should be shortened, without providing further details. Defense Minister Yisrael Katz has already approved the occupation plan, dubbing it " Operation Gideon's Chariots 2.' Israeli radio reported that the call-up of the 60,000 reservists began on Wednesday, and they will join 70,000 soldiers and officers who had already been mobilized over the past two weeks as part of preparations for the offensive. An Israeli army official told ABC News that the army is facing a shortage of between 10,000 and 12,000 soldiers, prompting appeals to Jewish abroad to help fill the gap. The Israeli army announced earlier that its forces had begun operations on the outskirts of Gaza City. Army spokesperson told reporters that troops had launched 'initial steps' of the assault and already hold positions in the city's suburbs. Gaza's Zaytoun neighborhood was also targeted by air and artillery strikes. 'Blatant disregard' In this context, Palestinian resistance group Hamas said that the Israeli army's announcement of the start of 'Operation Gideon's Chariots 2' represents 'a continuation of the genocide that has been ongoing for more than 22 months' in the Gaza Strip. In a statement, the group added that 'the new Israeli aggression shows disregard for the efforts of mediators seeking a ceasefire and prisoner exchange.' The statement stressed that 'Netanyahu is ignoring the mediators' proposal,' proving that 'he is the one obstructing any agreement and is not serious about recovering his captives.' Hamas affirmed that the Israeli assault 'will fail as previous ones have failed and will not achieve its objectives,' adding that 'the occupation of Gaza will not be a picnic.' The group also held Israel and the U.S. administration fully responsible for the consequences of the assault and the destruction of essential infrastructure in Gaza. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement also condemned the plan, saying Defense Minister Katz's approval demonstrates that Israel 'is blocking all prospects for a ceasefire in Gaza.' The group dismissed Israeli claims that Palestinian factions had accepted a Qatari-Egyptian proposal under military pressure, calling them 'lies.' The resistance group stressed that 'all resistance factions will continue confronting the occupation and will not yield to military pressure or blackmail.' It added that the only way for Israel to secure the release of its captives is 'to halt its aggression, lift the blockade, and agree to a prisoner exchange deal.' Multiple rounds of indirect negotiations – mediated by Egypt and Qatar throughout the two-year Israeli war in Gaza – have failed to secure a lasting ceasefire amid the insistence by Israel, backed by Washington, on continuing the war. On 19 March, Israel unilaterally ended a truce agreement, mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and the US in January, to resume its war on the strip. Tel Aviv and Washington backed off from ceasefire talks in July, claiming that Hamas was not negotiating in good faith. The new ceasefire plan, accepted by Hamas after fresh talks in Cairo, proposes an initial 60-day truce, a partial release of captives, the freeing of some Palestinian prisoners, and provisions for the entry of humanitarian aid.
