Will Sony PlayStation 6 cost the same as the PS5, while offering better performance?

Minta day ago
Sony's next-generation gaming console, the PlayStation 6 (PS6), could offer a significant performance upgrade while maintaining an affordable price point, according to newly surfaced leaks. The console is reportedly targeting a launch window between late 2027 and early 2028.
The leaks emerge from the YouTube channelMoore's Law Is Dead (spotted by Business Today first), which states it has seen internal AMD documents from 2023 outlining the potential specifications of the upcoming system. While Sony has not officially confirmed any of the information, the leak provides early insights into the company's possible direction for its future console.
According to the reported details, the PS6 may feature eight Zen 6 CPU cores, 40 to 48 or more RDNA 5 compute units running at over 3GHz, and GDDR7 memory on a 160-bit or 192-bit bus. The system is said to operate with a total board power of around 160W, which could indicate a focus on energy efficiency.
One of the key takeaways from the leak is Sony's intention to deliver up to three times the rasterisation performance of the PS5, with a continued emphasis on affordability. The PS6 is expected to debut at a price similar to that of the PlayStation 5, $499 in the US, despite the major hardware upgrade.
The design is also rumoured to incorporate a chiplet-based architecture, possibly making use of AMD's Navi 5 chips. Additionally, the console is said to retain backwards compatibility with PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 titles, a move likely aimed at maintaining user continuity and access to existing game libraries.
There are also suggestions that the PS6 could integrate AI-driven technologies to support more consistent performance and potentially enhance gameplay experiences.
Additionally, the reported approach echoes Sony's strategy with the PlayStation 4, which prioritised mass-market affordability over high-end specifications. By focusing on performance per dollar and optimising power efficiency, the company may aim to avoid the higher retail prices expected with devices such as the upcoming PS5 Pro.
As with all leaks, the specifications are subject to change, and no official details have been released by Sony at this stage.

AMD data center results disappoint, shares slump

By Arsheeya Bajwa and Max A. Cherney Advanced Micro Devices on Tuesday reported disappointing data center revenue, a segment which includes lucrative artificial intelligence chips that investors are betting on for rapid growth. Shares of the Santa Clara, California-based company slumped roughly 4% in extended trading. AMD 's shares have climbed more than 40% this year, far outpacing a nearly 12% jump in the benchmark chip index, as investors bet on the company's ability to capitalize on the widespread use of AI. Chips that power complex AI systems for Microsoft, Meta Platforms, generative AI leader OpenAI and other customers are still feverishly sought after by tech companies. Meta has raised the bottom end of its annual capital expenditure forecast by $2 billion to a range of $66 billion to $72 billion. Microsoft forecast a record $30 billion in capital spending for its current fiscal first quarter to meet soaring AI demand. However, AMD has not benefited from the AI spending splurge to the same degree as rival Nvidia. "Investors may be paying closer attention to their data center segment as they roll out new products to compete with NVDA and go after more reliable customers," said Carson Group chief market strategist Ryan Detrick. In Nvidia's fiscal first quarter, its data center segment jumped 73% to $39.11 billion as companies scrambled to adopt the company's flagship Blackwell chips and systems. Nvidia's data center business includes its graphics processors (GPUs) and networking hardware. By comparison, AMD's second-quarter data center revenue grew 14% to $3.2 billion, roughly in line with analysts' expectations of $3.22 billion, according to LSEG estimates. Beyond its Instinct AI chips, AMD also includes server processors (CPUs) in its data center segment. AMD's relatively lackluster data center revenue in the second quarter was "enough to raise an eyebrow," Dan Morgan, portfolio manager at Synovus Trust, an AMD and Nvidia shareholder. "AMD trades off of data center." In the conference call after AMD reported results, CEO Lisa Su said the company's AI chip revenue declined year-over-year because of the U.S. export restrictions on exports to China and the transition to next-generation MI350 series AI chips. The company began volume production of the MI350 series ahead of schedule in June, Su said, and AMD expects a steep ramp-up in production of the chip in the second half of this year. CHINA LICENSES UNDER REVIEW The chip designer's third-quarter revenue of about $8.7 billion, plus or minus $300 million, compared with analysts' average expectation of $8.30 billion, data compiled by LSEG showed. AMD estimated third-quarter adjusted gross margins of roughly 54%, compared with estimates of 54.1%. The outlook excludes revenue from AMD's AI chip MI308's shipments to China as license applications are under review by the U.S. government, the company said. AMD said last month the Department of Commerce would review its license applications to export its MI308 chips to China and it plans to resume those shipments when licenses are approved. U.S. curbs announced in April required it to obtain a license to ship advanced AI processors to China. AMD had forecast a $1.5 billion hit to revenue this year due to these curbs, with most of the impact affecting the second and third quarters. Adjusted for stock-based compensation and other items, AMD reported a second-quarter profit of 48 cents a share on revenue of $7.69 billion.

AMD, Super Micro shares slide as AI bets falter on data center results miss

Reuters FILE PHOTO: The AMD logo is seen in this illustration taken August 3, 2025. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Shares of chip company Advanced Micro Devices and server maker Super Micro Computer tumbled in premarket trading on Wednesday after the companies posted underwhelming results in their data center segments, shaking investor confidence in their AI growth narratives. AMD dropped 7%, while Super Micro plummeted about 17%. The selloff comes as chipmakers face mounting headwinds, including weak demand, rising inventories, and the threat of new U.S. tariffs on semiconductor imports, expected as early as next week. Last month, ASML, the world's biggest supplier of chip-making equipment, and TSMC, the world's main producer of advanced AI chips, and mobile chip designer Qualcomm also cautioned about tariff-related uncertainty. Analysts said that given the strength of the overall server market, Super Micro's disappointing results likely reflect market share losses to larger rivals SMCI peer Dell down about 3%. China drag, MI308 in spotlight AMD's data center unit, which includes its Instinct AI chips and server processors (CPUs), posted a 14% revenue rise to $3.2 billion in the second quarter, slightly below market expectations. "AI outlook did not show the sort of upside some investors were looking for," said Jefferies analysts. In contrast, Nvidia's data center segment jumped 73% to $39.11 billion in its fiscal first quarter. Chipmakers have benefited from Big Tech's AI spending spree, as these chips power their massive AI infrastructure, that has propelled AMD's shares to surge over 40% this year. In a post-earnings conference call, AMD CEO Lisa Su said the company's AI chip revenue declined year-over-year because of the U.S. restrictions on export of its MI308 chips to China. The company noted progress on export license reviews for the chips, but gave no clear timeline for lifting the restrictions. "Potential addback of MI308 revenues from lifting of export restrictions also appears to be more muted than market expectations," HSBC added. Super Micro: Margin squeeze, guidance miss Super Micro missed fourth-quarter estimates as it competes with larger rivals in AI server hardware, with execution missteps and Nvidia chip delays weighing on its performance. Analysts said any weakness in the high-expectation AI space tends to spark sharp investor backlash. "We expect better chip availability this fiscal year compared to the last two quarters, which will help us grow better," Super Micro CEO Charles Liang said on the post-earnings call. analysts noted that AI remains the "preeminent driver of sales growth," with over 70% of fourth-quarter revenue tied to AI platforms. Super Micro, seen as a proxy for Nvidia, and larger rival Dell have benefited from rising demand for AI servers, but the high cost of producing them and tough competition have pressured their margins. "Gross margin impact (for Super Micro this quarter) remains unclear," BofA analysts noted. AMD commands a higher forward price-to-earnings multiple of 32.39, compared to SMCI that trades at a more modest 19.69.
