Marlins' Cal Quantrill pitches MLB's 1st immaculate inning of 2025, and 118th in baseball history
Miami Marlins or Tampa Bay Rays fans not paying close attention during the fourth inning of Sunday's matchup might have been surprised by how quickly the top of the frame went by. Or they may have missed a special achievement by Marlins pitcher Cal Quantrill.
However, those who were dialed in watched the first immaculate inning of the 2025 MLB season and the 118th in baseball history. If you're unfamiliar with the term, an immaculate inning occurs when a pitcher strikes out the side on nine pitches.
Quantrill led off the inning by sitting down Jonathan Aranda on three consecutive cutters, all on the high and inside portion of the strike zone. The right-hander then got ahead of Christopher Morel with a sinker and curveball before catching him looking at a four-seam fastball on the high outside corner. Quantrill finished off the inning with a fastball to Kameron Misner followed by two cutters, the last of which was high and out of the strike zone. But Misner chased it for a strikeout.
An immaculate inning might not seem more rare than a perfect game. And in terms of numbers, it isn't. There have been 23 perfect games pitched in MLB history compared to those 118 immaculate innings. But in terms of percentages, pitching an immaculate inning is more rare, as MLB analyst Ryan Spaeder explained on social media.
Out of approximately 460,000 pitched games in major league history, 23 of those have been perfect games — or roughly 0.00500% (1 in 20,000). Compare that to around 4,275,000 innings pitched and 118 of them being immaculate. That equals about 0.00276% (1 one in 36,229).
So for those who were watching Quantrill in that fourth inning closely, congratulations! You witnessed a rare feat in baseball history.
Quantrill's immaculate inning was the first in MLB since Tampa Bay's Ryan Pepiot threw one last season on Sept. 18, 2024, versus the Boston Red Sox. (Two were thrown last year.) And he's the second Marlins pitcher to do so since Jesus Sanchez got three strikeouts on nine pitches against the Atlanta Braves on Sept. 13, 1998. (There were five immaculate innings thrown that season.)

Quantrill, 30, will surely enjoy achieving that feat in what's been a rough season for him thus far. In eight starts prior to Sunday's performance, he compiled a 7.00 ERA and 2-4 record with 23 strikeouts in 36 innings. That rate of 5.8 strikeouts per nine innings is the second-lowest of his seven-year MLB career. He was also allowing 11.5 hits per nine frames, the highest rate of his seven seasons.
Behind Quantrill allowing one run with two hits and six strikeouts over five innings, the Marlins defeated the Rays, 5-1. Miami's runs came on a three-run homer from Otto Lopez in the fourth, followed by a two-run shot by Liam Hicks in the sixth.
Following his five innings, Quantrill now has a 6.37 ERA and 3-4 record with 29 strikeouts in 41 innings. His strikeout rate improved to 6.37, while his hit rate is down to 10.54. So there's definitely room for Quantrill to improve. He might just have to keep pitching immaculately to get there.

James Tibbs III reacts to being in Rafael Devers trade, excited for potential future with Red Sox
While the Red Sox will see Rafael Devers in his new San Francisco Giants uniform this weekend, it might be a while before Boston fans see any of the players the team received in the surprising blockbuster. That is unless they head to Worcester or Portland, Maine. While Devers is already mashing for the Giants, the four players the Red Sox received are either injured or in the minor leagues. Hard-throwing reliever Jordan Hicks is sidelined with a foot injury, while lefty starter Kyle Harrison, outfielder James Tibbs III, and pitcher Jose Bello will be taking the bus for the foreseeable future. Harrison was sent to Triple-A Worcester after Sunday's trade was completed, and has yet to make his debut for the WooSox. Tibbs, meanwhile, is now in Double-A Portland where he made his debut for the Sea Dogs on Tuesday. The outfielder/first baseman, who is currently ranked the No. 6 prospect in the Boston system, collected his first career hit at the Double-A level on Wednesday. On Thursday night, he went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored for Portland in a 7-6 loss to Akron. Tibbs spoke with WBZ-TV's and CBS News Boston's Joe Weil ahead of Thursday's game and shared his reaction to being traded to the Red Sox, an organization he had always hoped to be a part of. He just had to take a different and very unexpected route to join the Boston franchise. Tibbs' reaction to be traded to the Red Sox Devers was traded just hours after he hit a home run for Boston in a 2-0 win over the Yankees at Fenway Park. He and his teammates were about to board a flight and head off on a nine-game west coast swing, when Devers was pulled aside and told he had been dealt to San Francisco. Tibbs' trade story was just as interesting. He was wrapping up his final game with the Eugene Emeralds in High-A ball and had just worked a walk in the ninth inning. When he got to first base, he was surprised to see he was being lifted for a pinch runner. When Tibbs got back to the dugout, the team's pitching coach handed him a phone. The director of San Francisco's farm system was on the other end, and told Tibbs he had been traded to the Boston Red Sox. "My first thought was, 'Huh, no kidding. Alright.' A lot of emotion," Tibbs told Weil. "Definitely was very sad to leave those guys; I had a great time over there and had a blast with that group of guys in Eugene. But I was immediately so fired up to become a Red Sox." Tibbs got a taste for baseball in New England when he played for the Brewster Whitecaps of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2023. "Being in New England and playing in the Cape, I knew the love for Boston sports and the Red Sox specifically," he explained. Then Tibbs started wondering how he ended up in Boston. "Then I was like, 'Alright, who was I traded for?' When I found out it was Devers, I was like, alright, this could go one of two ways. It went both ways for sure, with a lot of mixed emotions. I tried my best not to go on social media and get my feelings hurt," he said. While the reaction among Red Sox fans certainly swayed one way after the trade was announced, it didn't take away from Tibbs' excitement. He said it was extremely humbling to be in the trade package for a player like Devers. "To be a part of something like that, it's very cool, very humbling. Very appreciative of the Red Sox giving me a chance to come and play here," said Tibbs. "Couldn't be a better spot, a better opportunity. I'm ecstatic to be here." Tibbs in the Cape Cod Baseball League Tibbs put together a solid campaign for the Whitecaps in his lone season on the Cape, slashing .303/.390/.472 with six homers, six doubles, 25 RBI, and 17 runs scored over 40 games. He was drawn to the region that summer, and hoped to return for his pro career. "I remember walking away like, 'Wow. This place is fantastic.' The people, the places, there are so many cool spots here. I'm a big food guy, and the food is phenomenal so I'm excited to be back for that as well," he said. What food is Tibbs looking forward to scarfing down the most? "Clams and lobster," he said. "It's hard to beat." Tibbs was drafted by the Giants with the 13th overall pick out of Florida State in 2024. He was hoping to go to Boston at 12th overall, but the Red Sox picked Braden Montgomery instead. (Montgomery was traded to the White Sox in the Garrett Crochet trade over the offseason.) "This was a place I had hoped to play one day," Tibbs said of the Red Sox. "I had hoped they picked me in the draft, but they didn't and now I'm here anyways. Pretty funny how the circle comes around in full." Tibbs is hoping to get a crack at Fenway Park in the near future. He was supposed to get a chance to hit some batting practice at the famous ballpark during a prospect day while with Brewster, but it was canceled because of rain when he was on-deck. "It's always been in the back of my mind. At least if I play one game in the big leagues with the Giants, I had hoped it was at Fenway. Now I get the opportunity to call it home," he said. "It's even cooler for me and even cooler for us as a family."

Inter Miami, a club 30 years younger than Argentina's great man, might not be playing either, depending on the sort of stars it has assembled by then. Still, Messi is now 37—turning 38 this June 24—and Inter Miami is alive and kicking in FIFA's new-look competition after the Barcelona legend's pin-point free-kick secured a win against Porto on Thursday. As well as leaping closer to the last 16, how far Miami and Messi run in the Club World Cup will impact the tournament's success and, consequently, its future. Approaching a week since kick-off, the Club World Cup has endured its share of criticism, especially from a European standpoint: another commitment for tiring players after a long domestic season, searing heat affecting performance levels, FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino wanting to exercise their power and generate as much money as possible. Does it democratize the world game or make professional soccer more elitist? Does the planet even need this tournament? On the surface, rows of empty seats during many fixtures don't look good. Although games have been more full than not on average, there were reportedly over 400,000 vacant from the opening round of games. There is a context here, though. FIFA most likely overestimated the popularity of this spectacle, with initially high pricing and the massive stadiums harder to fill. Then you factor in some fans needing to prove their legal status to attend. FIFA has naturally put a positive spin on attendance. Amid all that, contests with South American teams have seen fervent crowds. And, from FIFA's perspective, Inter Miami (considered a home side) going deep into the tournament would further local interest—good news. The fact Miami is a non-European participant against the backdrop of European clubs tipped to dominate accentuates that point. Indeed, challenging those sides raises the profile of Major League Soccer and tips the balance a little. Getty Images Whether coach Javier Mascherano's squad can topple one or two favorites is an interesting question. Household names Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suárez accompany Messi in the lineup. And while all are nearing the denouement of their playing careers, they can win something prestigious (relatively speaking) again. 36-year-old Busquets barely sweats as the pass-master in midfield. Alba still looks able to get up and down the wing. The number nine, Suárez, appears a little labored yet still has that tigerish spirit. Meanwhile, youngster Telasco Segovia has stood out—in a formation where players cluster around the ball. Of course, Messi is the creative spark around whom everything takes off. His presence alone wasn't enough to sell out expensive tickets at Hard Rock Stadium in the curtain raiser against Al-Ahly. Yet, in a climate where individuals alone can market a team or competition, his continuation increases the Club World Cup's popular appeal. Viewers may also buy into the narrative of Messi, in his twilight years, potentially winning one last international trophy. It's easy for traditionalists, particularly on the other side of the Atlantic, to shun the Club World Cup. From the U.S.-style individual player entrances onto the field to host broadcaster DAZN encouraging fan interactions during games through comments and polls, it's a little different for some. As referenced, Inter Miami—pretty in pink—is one of the young clubs and surrounded by sides that have existed for over a century. Even though Messi may not be there for the long haul, FIFA needs him, the biggest megastar of all, playing for an Inter Miami with the majority of its history to write. Then, the Club World Cup can properly usher in a new era.
