20 songbirds and monitor lizard seized in raids on wildlife traffickers
PETALING JAYA : Five men have been detained and a range of protected wildlife specimens, including 20 live white-rumped sharma songbirds and a monitor lizard, were seized in separate raids in Perak and Kedah.
The raids involved the wildlife crime bureau at Bukit Aman, the wildlife and parks department (Perhilitan) and local authorities in Lumut, Perak, and Kupang, Kedah, Bernama reported.
A statement from Bukit Aman said the raids on July 24 had successfully dismantled illegal wildlife hunting and trafficking activities.
Four men aged between 31 and 61 were detained in the first raid on a house in Lumut. A live monitor lizard and a range of wildlife parts and weapons were seized.

Among the items confiscated were seven wild boar carcasses, 148 packages of water monitor lizard parts, 80 packages believed to contain wild boar meat, and a live monitor lizard, Bukit Aman said in a statement. A rifle, 30 bullets, 40 used bullet casings, and a bullet belt were also seized.
The team also discovered a necklace with two pendants, believed to be tiger claws, a skull fragment suspected to be from a wild boar, and 23 vials believed to contain water monitor lizard bile.
In a separate raid at 12.45pm in Kedah, a 30-year-old man was arrested and 20 white-rumped sharma (Copsychus malabaricus) birds were seized. The birds, a protected species, have an estimated value of RM200,000.
The white-rumped sharma is native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, while the subspecies Copsychus malabaricus tricolor is native to West Malaysia and Sumatra. It is a popular cage bird for its rich and melodious voice.

JPJ seizes four luxury cars including Mercedes S400 a China national drove with no insurance for a year
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) seized four luxury vehicles, including a Mercedes-Benz and a Toyota Vellfire, without valid insurance and road tax during an operation in Shah Alam last night. The seizures took place during a five-hour enforcement effort called 'Ops Pengarah' that began at 8.30pm at the Kota Kemuning Toll Plaza along the Kesas Expressway, the New Straits Times reported. JPJ officers first stopped a Mercedes-Benz S400 driven by a 41-year-old woman from China. Checks revealed that the car had been without valid road tax or insurance for over a year. The woman, who is married to a Malaysian, was also driving without a valid licence. In another case, a 25-year-old Malaysian man was found driving a Toyota Vellfire MPV with expired road tax. He claimed that his brother had purchased the vehicle three months ago by taking over the hire-purchase instalments from the previous owner. The man added that he had asked the original owner to renew the road tax, but was told this could not be done due to unresolved summonses. Both drivers had to book e-hailing rides home after JPJ officers impounded their vehicles on the spot. Selangor RTD director Azrin Borhan said 16,735 cases of unlicensed driving and 25,338 road tax-related offences were recorded from January to July this year. Yesterday, a transport safety group alleged that luxury vehicle owners often opt to forego obtaining insurance and road tax as it was cheaper to pay the RM300 fine each time they were caught.

Man dumps Mercedes after fatal crash with teen motorcyclist in Seremban (VIDEO)
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — Police are searching for a man who abandoned his Mercedes-Benz car that was involved in a crash that killed a 17-year-old motorcyclist in Seremban. The accident happened at about 6.45am yesterday along Jalan Temiang, near Simpang Bukit Jong, Seremban district police chief ACP Mohamad Hatta Che Din said. According to Mohamad Hatta, the Mercedes-Benz driver lost control and crashed into the oncoming motorcycle, causing a fatal head-on collision. The teenager, who was reportedly on his way to work at a nearby petrol station, died on the spot due to severe head injuries. Mohamad Hatta said the driver then fled the scene, leaving his car behind. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. Police are calling for witnesses or anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist the investigation.
