Cleveland Browns' Martin Emerson Jr. goes down with potential season-ending injury
The 24-year-old Mississippi State product was in coverage during 7-on-7 drills when he suddenly dropped to the ground in obvious pain, according to multiple reports. Onlookers could hear him scream before being carted off the field.
He will undergo an MRI to confirm the severity of the injury, which the team fears is a rupture that would end his 2025 campaign.
Emerson had just shared his hopes for the upcoming season with reporters after failing to build on his breakout 2023 performance in 2024.
Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Emerson said he was hampered by some injuries, which he neglected to specify.
'As the year went along, my body was just kind of on a downward spiral,' he said. 'Just had to do some soul searching, man. Pray, stay close to God and just work my tail off.
'Honestly, that´s the only thing that could kind of get me out of that slump, was the work. Put in the work and just come back and be ready.'
He even added six pounds of muscle to help his body prepare for the season.
The timing of the injury is potentially devastating for Emerson, who is on his rookie contract and will be an unrestricted free agent in 2026. He has $4.5 million in career earnings over three NFL seasons.
The Browns will likely promote nickelback Greg Newsome II opposite Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward with the first-team defense.
Cameron Mitchell and Chigozie Anusiem could also be in line for more action without Emerson.
Cleveland's defense is already preparing to be without linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, who suffered a neck injury and has already been ruled out for 2025. Owusu-Koramoah is considered one of the better coverage linebackers in football.
The Browns' defense has flown mostly under the radar this offseason as the team looks to find its quarterback. The team entered camp with veteran Joe Flacco, former Philadelphia Eagles backup Kenny Pickett, rookie third-round pick Dillon Gabriel and Deion Sanders' son, Shedeur, a rookie fifth-round pick out of Colorado.
Flacco and Pickett have split first-team reps while Gabriel and Sanders have divided the backup duties in camp.
Meanwhile, rookie running back Quinshon Judkins remains away from camp following his arrest on a domestic violence charge earlier this month. The second-round pick was looking at potentially starting after the departure of Nick Chubb.

Giants legend out at CBS amid major NFL shakeup ahead of new season
Former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber will have a different NFL gameday experience this year than in recent seasons. Barber, 50, was left off CBS' broadcast roster for the 2025 NFL season after having previously worked each season since 2019. Rather than appear on televisions for broadcast duties, Barber will instead be working directly with his former team. Barber will be a pre-game and post-game show co-host for Giants gameday broadcasts on radio station WFAN. The running back will be joined by John Schmeelk of for the show. 'I am really excited to be joining the Giants gameday radio broadcast team on WFAN,' Barber said. 'This organization has meant so much to me professionally and personally. Replacing Barber will be Charles Davis (R). Davis, who is set to move to CBS's college football coverage in 2026, will broadcast alongside Andrew Catalon next year rather than Ian Eagle (L). 'The Giants have a long history of legendary broadcasters, and Wellington Mara always told them to call it like they see it because our fans know better. 'I look forward to providing analysis and insight that Giants fans appreciate.' Barber was a second-round pick by the Giants in 1997 out of the University of Virginia - spending his entire career with the team before retiring in 2006. Last season, as a part of the team's 100th anniversary, Barber was named one of the 100 Greatest Giants of All Time. The move to drop Barber from CBS follows on from a move announced in March which will see a few new broadcast teams formed at the company. Back in March, it was announced that JJ Watt would be moving from the network's pregame show - 'The NFL Today' - to become the new analyst on CBS's No. 2 broadcast team alongside play-by-play man Ian Eagle. Eagle's former on-air partner, Charles Davis, is taking Barber's old job in the booth alongside play-by-play man Andrew Catalon and analyst Jason McCourty. Davis is set to move to CBS's college football coverage in 2026. It's unclear if he'll stay in this NFL role next year as well.

Tom Brady needs to be 'genuine' and criticize today's NFL stars in Fox Sports role, says analyst and ex-MVP
It's time for Tom Brady to get a little meaner, according to his fellow MVP and NFL analyst, Boomer Esiason. The retired Cincinnati Bengals quarterback recently offered some tips to Brady as he prepares for his second season as a Fox Sports announcer. Most notably, Esiason told Awful Announcing that Brady needs to get more comfortable criticizing the game's current stars, regardless of whether they have relationships with the seven-time Super Bowl winner. 'Hopefully, in year two, [Tom Brady will] feel more comfortable and more confident and understand exactly what the viewers are looking for,' Esiason told Awful announcing. Crediting Brady's comfort level with play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt, Esiason noted that Brady has traditionally refrained from any public criticism of NFL players or teams. 'Tom has always been careful, never really controversial, especially when it came to football,' Esiason said before referencing Brady's former Patriots head coach, Bill Belichick. 'Kind of followed the Bill Belichick way of talking about teams and things of that nature. 'And even meeting with Tom before games, he never really gave you much,' Esiason said. 'He was always guarded. I think what you try to do is become as genuine as you can in the broadcast booth. I don't necessarily know that anybody will be as genuine as the great John Madden was or Merlin Olsen was. Those were different times. There wasn't social media impacting everything that's going on. Not everybody's going to love you as a broadcaster. I learned that pretty early on.' Brady isn't alone in his reluctance to offer criticism, Esiason said. 'I would also say most analysts these days are very careful,' he continued. 'They're not nearly as critical as some have been in the past.' Now primarily a radio host, Esiason recalled one former teammate slamming his performance in the early 1990s. 'My former teammate Cris Collinsworth probably falls under that category because when he started in TV, he was covering a lot of my games,' Esiason said. 'I had a couple of bad games, and I remember him being pretty critical of the way I was playing. 'Richard Sandomir was a sports TV columnist [for The New York Times],' Esiason continued. 'Richard gave, I think, Cris five stars because he was able to criticize me, his former teammate. Cris was much more critical back when he first started.' Esiason also acknowledged he may have had more experience by the time he made his way to the booth and CBS Sports' in-studio halftime show. With the NFL helping to fund the now-defunct World Football League in the early 1990s, both Esiason, Houston Oilers quarterback Warren Moon and Miami Dolphins legend Dan Marino were given the chance to analyze live games. That opportunity helped prepare Esiason for analyzing the NFL, which led him to stints with ABC's Monday Night Football and CBS Sports.
