Stalking case returns to haunt BJP MP's son Vikas Barala. Haryana govt drops him as AAG in swift U-turn
Gurugram: In a rapid volte-face, the Haryana government revoked the appointment of Vikas Barala, son of BJP Rajya Sabha MP Subhash Barala, as Assistant Advocate General (AAG) just 10 days after his name featured in a list of 97 law officers engaged by the state government for its AG office.

The controversial appointment
On 18 July 2025, the Haryana government headed by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini issued a notification appointing Vikas Barala AAG in the Advocate General's Delhi office.
The appointment was a part of an overall recruitment of 97 law officers, such as Additional Advocate Generals, Senior Deputy Advocate Generals, Deputy Advocate Generals, and Assistant Advocate Generals, approved by then-Governor Bandaru Dattatreya.
Barala's appointment caused instant controversy because he was accused in the 2017 Varnika Kundu stalking case, which had raised questions on women's safety and the role of political patronage into focus.
Vikas, the son of then-Haryana BJP president Subhash Barala (now, a Rajya Sabha MP), was charged with stalking and trying to kidnap disc jockey Varnika Kundu, daughter of a retired IAS officer V.S. Kundu, on the evening of 4 August 2017, in Chandigarh. The case is still pending at a Chandigarh court, with the next hearing on 2 August 2025.
Varnika Kundu, who was 29 at the time, was returning home from Chandigarh's Sector-8 market at around 12:15 AM. In her complaint, she said Vikas Barala and his friend Ashish Kumar had followed her in a Tata Safari, tried to close in on her, and tried to get into her car. Kundu described how the accused took her in the direction of Sector-26, with one of them getting down and trying to open her car door, but failed as it had central locking. She informed the Chandigarh Police through the emergency helpline (100), disclosed her location, and called her father, resulting in the immediate arrest of Barala and Kumar.
An FIR was filed under Sections 354D (stalking), 341 (wrongful restraint), 365 (attempt to abduct), 511 (attempt to commit an offence), and charges of drunken driving under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). A 200-page chargesheet was filed on 20 September 2017, and charges were framed on 13 October 2017.
Barala spent five months in Chandigarh's Model Jail at Burail, during which he continued his law studies and appeared for exams. The trial, now in the defence evidence stage, has seen over 100 hearings but remains unresolved after eight years, with Kundu expressing frustration over repeated adjournments.
The appointment of Barala as AAG stirred massive outrage, with Varnika Kundu speaking up for the first time on social media. In a moving four-page Facebook message, she said, 'Appointing someone to a public position of power is not just a political decision, it's a reflection of values and standards. The questions must be posed to the authorities whose ethics permitted this action.'
She emphasised the protracted legal fight, observing that in spite of months of national publicity, her case had made very little headway. 'While we appear no nearer a verdict than we were five years ago, I still have hope in the judiciary until the verdict comes out—but I won't lie and say that faith hasn't weakened,' she further said.
Kundu thanked the public and media for the support which, she said, brought tears to her eyes and gave her strength.
Kundu's blog post struck a chord, re-igniting debates on the case that had originally inspired the 'Bekhauf Azaadi' movement in Chandigarh, causing Google Maps to re-designate Chandigarh's 'Geri Route' as 'Azadi Route' in 2018.
The 'Geri Route' in Chandigarh is a well-known stretch of roads, primarily spanning Sectors 8, 9, 10, and 11, with the core area being around colleges like DAV College and Government College for Girls. 'Geri' (or 'Gedi') is a Punjabi term that loosely translates to 'rounds' or a leisurely drive/stroll. The 'Geri Route' has been a popular spot for the youth of Chandigarh, especially college students, to cruise around in their cars and motorbikes, socialise, and show off their vehicles.
Google Maps' action of changing the name of this stretch to 'Azadi Route' was a symbolic move to reclaim public spaces for everyone and challenge the 'geri culture' which, at times, was associated with harassment of college girls and women visiting the markets along this route.
The IAS officers' letter
On 26 July 2025, 45 retired IAS officers of the 1986 batch (Varnika's father V.S. Kundu's batch), with officers like P.D. Vaghela, former TRAI chairman, G.V. Venugopala Sarma, former chairman of the National Authority of the Chemical Weapon Convention, and Ravi Capoor, former secretary, textiles ministry, addressed an open letter to CM Saini.
The letter, posted on X by the veteran journalist Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, reacted in shock at the appointment of Barala, terming it a 'betrayal of Haryana's asmita (pride)' and a negation of the 'Beti Bachao' campaign.
'We cannot understand the logic of the appointment of a man who has been accused of stalking a woman as AAG,' the letter said. 'He will serve as the state legal officer when he himself is on the wrong side of the law in this grave case.'
The officers asked for Barala's appointment to be revoked at once, citing the risk of his appointment affecting the pending trial. They also used the 2011 Supreme Court rejection of P.J. Thomas' appointment as head of Central Vigilance Commission in the wake of a pending case and asked that Barala's appointment be vetted similarly. The letter ended with a request to expedite the trial, pointing out that more than seven years had gone by without a verdict.
Divya Spandana's post
The scandal further picked up momentum with former MP turned actor Divya Spandana, popularly referred to as Ramya, tweeting on X on 23 July 2025, and fueling doubts over the screening process. She tweeted, 'The BJP Govt in Haryana has appointed the accused Vikas Barala in the Varnika Kundu stalking case as Assistant Advocate General of the very state that is prosecuting him!! @PMOIndia @AmitShah @arjunrammeghwal @NayabSainiBJP How could the screening committee have sanctioned this?'

After the government decided to withdraw Barala, Spandana cheered on X on Monday, saying, 'Win for us!!! On days like these, this piece of news makes me so happy. Accused Vikas Barala's name has been removed from the Haryana Law Officers list. This would not have been possible without all the women who stood up for Varnika—and not to forget the men too who supported us in this fight. This is proof that justice does win out, if we stand together.'

She had mentioned on X that she tagged some journalists, actors Richa Chadha, Mahua Moitra, and CM Nayab Saini, attributing concerted efforts in the overturning of the decision.

Malegaon case verdict is quite baffling
Not quite unexpectedly, the special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Mumbai gave the accused in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case the benefit of doubt in the absence of definitive proof and acquitted them. To make sense, the investigation, the prosecution and the verdict should not be looked at in isolation from the present political climate. The fact that, from inside the courtroom, Pragya Singh Thakur declared the verdict 'a victory for Hindutva' was highly significant. The acquittal left us with the question, if not the accused, who else planned and carried out the bomb blast? Certainly, it would not have been done by ghosts or aliens. In this case, the law appears to have ended its own course without meeting the end of justice and giving the victims' families a sense of closure. Union Home Minister Amit Shah sounded prescient when he said a day before the pronouncement of 'not guilty' verdict that 'no Hindu can ever be a terrorist'. The Sangh Parivar hailed the verdict as a vindication of its rejection of 'saffron terror' as a mere bogey created by the Congress-led UPA regime. In this case justice has not only been delayed, but also denied, troubling the nation's conscience. G David Milton, Maruthancode (TN) BJP must appeal against acquittal Thespecial court had acquitted all seven accused in 2006 Malegaon blast case citing lack of evidence, tampering of evidence and discrepancies in prosecution's case, among others. This is leading to a public mistrust in our justice system, as to the way the accused after prolonged investigation and trial process spanning two rival political party's rule escape punishment. The Congress and AIMIM have rightfully urged the BJP to appeal against the verdict, as they had appealed against 7/11 Mumbai train blasts verdict in the Supreme Court. P R Ravinder, Hyderabad

Bihar MP Pappu Yadav: ‘Mahagathbandhan could win on Rahul's vision, those keen to be CM must understand it'
Associated with the Congress party, independent MP Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, has been an outspoken leader in Bihar politics. Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, he merged his Jan Adhikar Party with the Congress. However, he had to contest from Purnea as an Independent after he could not get the Congress's ticket with the seat going to its senior ally Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) under their Mahagathbandhan alliance. However, he still managed to win the seat by defeating the Janata Dal (United) candidate, becoming an MP for the sixth time. In an interview with The Indian Express, Pappu Yadav, 57, speaks on a range of issues related to the upcoming Bihar Assembly polls. Excerpts: As a worker who takes our leader Rahul Gandhi's vision to the people… Bihar is in a very bad condition. Three crore people have migrated. And there has been no capital investment in the state in the last 30-40 years. Not a single factory has been set up. Our state has the highest potential for food processing, but no one talks about it. All the leaders. No one has the will-power. They just want to stay in power. As a man, Nitish ji is a good person; he is honest. But everyone around Nitish ji is dishonest. An 'Inspector Raj' was in effect. The officers (bureaucrats) ran Nitish ji's government. Everyone looted. The BJP never wanted Nitish ji (as CM). Nitish ji still has a secular image today. But the way things are, Muslims feel that Chandrababu Naidu (TDP) and Nitish Kumar have stabbed in the back by supporting the NDA government on the amended Waqf law. This has caused them the most pain. When our leader (Rahul Gandhi) demands 65% reservation and caste census, Nitish ji becomes silent. Without Nitish ji, BJP has no value in Bihar and a BJP government cannot be formed. Now the EBC (Extremely Backward Classes) have understood that the BJP has finished their leader (Nitish). So, the EBC, ST, SC, OBC votes are shifting towards the Congress. We have to take the alliance along. Without the perspective of the Congress, you cannot do anything. People in Bihar are moving towards the Congress. I do not know anything about this. I am nowhere. Only our leader will tell. Who is there to ask Pappu Yadav? I am just an ordinary worker. I am not entitled to speak on that. We will fight and win the election on our leader (Rahul Gandhi)'s vision and make the INDIA bloc win. If you eliminate the votes of STs, SCs, and EBCs in this manner, there will be a very bad impact on elections. There is no question of political loss. The question is of rights being snatched. We will not allow it to be erased. JMM should definitely be included…(On AIMIM) tell me one thing… We speak against the RSS, and there is another ideology that only talks about its own. They (AIMIM) is only concerned about their quam (community). You should talk about the Constitution. What impact did he have? The first time he came, he went to work in Amethi. He then went with Modi ji. He then went to Nitish ji, Mamata, came to Congress… He got a vanity van… sleeps in AC and says, 'I am touring' and that he will become the chief minister. The EBCs, STs, SCs, OBCs and minorities in Bihar have developed a hunger for politics. In Bihar, only an EBC, ST, or SC will be the Chief Minister. No one else can be. It would not happen for the next 50 years at least. The political hunger has awakened in the country. 90% of the people are from these suppressed communities, so why should the other 10% always rule? If we move together on Rahul Gandhi ji's vision, bring Hemant ji (Soren), and strengthen the alliance even more, don't let anyone leave, and avoid ego clashes – those who are keen to become Chief Minister they must understand such things… that if we follow Rahul Gandhi's vision, everyone will support us and the Mahagathbandhan will win… then no one can stop the INDIA alliance. The BJP is the biggest threat itself. BJP survives only because of Nitish Kumar. The prevailing situation is not good. We want Nitish ji to stay strong but BJP does not want him to. Yes, he should come to the alliance. Because the BJP will stab him in the back. Personally, I respect Nitish ji. It is not just me. Our leaders respect him too.

Rohan Jaitley demands apology from Rahul Gandhi over remarks on Arun Jaitley
New Delhi: Rohan Jaitley , son of former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and chief of the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA), on Saturday demanded a public apology from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his remarks claiming that Arun Jaitley had threatened him over the farm laws. Calling the allegations "highly condemnable," Rohan Jaitley earlier pointed out that the farm laws were introduced in 2020—13 months after his father's death in August 2019—making it impossible for Arun Jaitley to have been involved. "Threatening people was not in Arun Jaitley's nature. He was a staunch democrat and a consensus builder. To say he threatened anyone over the Farmer's Bill, which came after his death, is unacceptable," Rohan Jaitley told ANI. Malviya termed Gandhi's statement "factually incorrect and misleading," clarifying that the farm bills were drafted and enacted in 2020, well after Arun Jaitley's demise. Thakur accused Gandhi of spreading "a new lie every day" and demanded he apologise to Jaitley's family and the BJP. "Rahul Gandhi should apologise to Arun Jaitley's family, the BJP, and the entire country," Thakur said, pointing out that the farm laws were passed in Parliament over a year after Jaitley's death. Live Events Rahul Gandhi had earlier alleged that Arun Jaitley was sent by the Modi government to "threaten" him for opposing the farm laws, sparking a sharp backlash from the BJP and Jaitley's family.
