Arizona Cardinals had major defensive improvements in 2024 despite challenges
The Arizona Cardinals have made a concerted effort this offseason to improve their defense, adding starting talent and depth on the defensive line, the defensive edge and linebacker in free agency and then addressing every defensive position in the NFL draft.
But that roster improvement comes after they made marked improvements from 2023 to 2024 defensively.
BetMGM's Nick Hennion noted that the Cardinals "moved from 32nd in defensive DVOA in 2023 to 14th in 2024" and that the improvement was impressive for a number of reasons.
They played the third-hardest schedule of opposing offenses in 2024 after playing the hardest schedule in 2023. They lost 72.9 adjusted games to injury on defense, the fourth-highest total in the league. They lost BJ Ojulari, Dennis Gardeck, Justin Jones and Bilal Nichols to season-ending injuries.
They were 15th in scoring defense last season but 21st in yards allowed. They were 14th in passing defense and 20th in run defense. However, they had an interesting dichotomy of metrics. They were sixth in the league in the percentage of opposing offensive drives ending in scores, but they were dead last in plays allowed per drive and second-to-last in time allowed per drive.
If they improved that much with a roster that is markedly worse than the current one, imagine what this year's defense might be when they have an easier schedule.

Even before Bryce Ford-Wheaton landed on injured reserve (IR) with a torn Achilles, several undrafted rookie free agents were pushing for a spot on the New York Giants' 53-man roster. Because of his special teams prowess and unique utility, Dalen Cambre was considered an early favorite. However, after six training camp practices, there may be a new frontrunner in the wide receiver room: Beaux Collins. The 6-foot-3, 201-pound Collins, who joined the Giants out of Notre Dame, has been receiving first-team reps, just as he had during minicamp, and has seized upon his opportunity thus far. "I think guys like Collins have really shown some unbelievable growth," Wilson told reporters last week. With Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, Wan'Dale Robinson, and Jalin Hyatt already locked into roster spots, there are precious few jobs available at receiver. That's especially true if you throw in Ihmir Smith-Marsette, who will serve as the team's return specialist. That leaves Collins and a handful of others vying for one or two spots, depending on how many the Giants opt to carry. But plays like this will only help Collins state his case: There's still a long way to go in camp and the preseason, and everything is subject to change, but at least for now, Collins appears to be leading the race in what has turned out to be a deep wide receiver room. Mike Sainristil describes competitive battles with Deebo Samuel
Dan Quinn stresses competition. Part of his culture with the Washington Commanders is competition. That's also his favorite part of training camp. Quinn doesn't just mean players at the bottom of the roster fighting for a spot, but he wants his best players competing with their teammates. Washington's current roster is full of those players. That's how you know you're building it right. Second-year cornerback Mike Sainristil is a rising NFL star, but he's always striving to be better, much like quarterback Jayden Daniels. Look no further than Washington's acquisition of wide receiver Deebo Samuel. One of the NFL's best offensive weapons since he entered the league in 2019, Samuel is reinvigorated since arriving in March. Samuel is a competitor too, so it's no surprise that he and Sainristil have had some fun battles in practice through one week of camp. Sainristil spoke to the media on Tuesday and mentioned his battles with Samuel. "I've appreciated having him on the opposite side of me because I just know every single rep is going to be a rep to get him better, get me better," Sainristil said. "And I feel like that's what I needed was to have somebody like him who's going to push me and help me get better. We've done extra things after practice, whether it's walkthrough tempo, jog tempo, it doesn't matter. Just every single day, we both have the mindset of we're going to battle, we're going to compete, you're going to get better, I'm going to get better." That quote made Quinn smile. That's what he wants from every player on the 90-man roster. Embrace the competition. It's no coincidence that Samuel and Sainristil are both having outstanding training camps this summer. Bears rookie Colston Loveland sounds off on return to practice field
Chicago Bears rookie tight end Colston Loveland has only been full-go at training camp for three days, but he's managed to turn heads during each practice. Following Tuesday's padded practice -- where he made an impressive third-down grab from quarterback Caleb Williams on third down during a 11-on-11, live tackling period -- Loveland sounded off on his return to the practice field after being a spectator throughout the Bears' offseason program. "It's a blessing. It's a blessing to finally be out here with the guys, just working every day, continuing to get better," Loveland said Tuesday. "You can't ask for much more. Learned a lot throughout the process, obviously, and became a better man. I'm just excited to be out here and work with my team." And in case you were wondering, Loveland's shoulder is doing just fine. 'Shoulder feels great, and that's what we're asked to do as tight ends, especially in this offense,' he said. 'You're not just gonna be a pass-catching tight end or a run-blocking tight end. You're gonna be asked to do it all, and you wouldn't want it any other way.' Loveland has already impressed in the passing game, where he's developing a nice rapport with Williams in just a short time together. And Loveland is looking to come just as advertised: impressing with his combination of speed and size, as well as pass-catching prowess on top of his solid blocking. While it's still early, it's impressive to see the impact Loveland is already making on the practice field. With more time in Ben Johnson's offense and continuing to build chemistry with Williams, Loveland is poised to be a huge weapon in this Bears offense.
