Ngcobo promises an 'improved' Chiefs after completion of preseason in the Netherlands

TimesLIVE18-07-2025
Nkosingiphile Ngcobo is looking forward to a better season with Kaizer Chiefs after undergoing a preseason with the club in the Netherlands where he learnt a few things in the five training matches they played.
The midfielder featured in some of the matches Chiefs played against Utrecht, Vitesse, Twente FC, PEC Zwolle and NEC Breda.
'Personally, I feel good, I improved in some respects,' said Ngcobo.
'I learnt a lot in this camp and also as a team we have learnt and improved. For me, I have improved and I think the supporters will get the Mshini [his nickname] they know but with improvements.'
Amakhosi return to South Africa to start preparing for their final preseason official friendly — a Toyota Cup clash against Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on July 26.
Chiefs, who finished ninth on the Betway Premiership log last season under Tunisian mentor Nasreddine Nabi, open their league campaign on August 10 away to Stellenbosch FC at the Athlone Stadium according to provisional fixtures.

Kaizer Chiefs player ratings: Who FIRED, who FLOPPED

Kaizer Chiefs suffered another pre-season defeat after going 3-2 to Asante Kotoko in a penalty shootout in the Toyota Cup. The pre-season match, played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon, finished 0-0 after 90 minutes and penalties were needed to separate the two sides. Amakhosi were the better team overall but failed to take their chances. In the 82nd minute, captain Miguel Inacio missed a penalty after Mduduzi Shabalala was brought down in the penalty box. Who fired for Kaizer Chiefs? Thabo Cele 10/10 Cele orchestrated the midfield alongside Sibongiseni Mthethwa and was by far the best Amakhosi player on the field. He dictated the tempo of the game and allowed the team to play from the back, linking the defence and the midfield, thus forcing Asante Kotoko to starve for possession. Nkosingiphile Ngcobo 9/10 The young attacker has looked like a different player in the past few weeks. He was arguably Kaizer Chiefs' best player in the Netherlands and has now brought his form to South Africa. Ngcobo created space for himself in the midfield and often linked with Glody Lilepo and Mfundo Vilakazi. Flavio de Silva 8/10 The big striker impressed on Saturday after a difficult pre-season in the Netherlands. After failing to score in four matches, the 29-year-old striker has been heavily criticised, however, in front of Khosi fans, he created several chances and linked well with Lilepo and Ngcobo in the first half. Which Kaizer Chiefs players flopped? Miguel Inacio (4/10) The captain had a dreadful game on Saturday. Although he wasn't tested much, he missed two penalties. one during normal play and the other during the shootout. He made a few fouls and was often caught out of position. Lucky for him, the Asante attack was toothless. Wandile Duba (3/10) The young forward was introduced in the second half but failed to make an impact. He had a one-on-one situation but fired straight at the keeper. Duba has not looked lively for Kaizer Chiefs in a while and will likely start from the bench when the team plays their opening league game next month. Toyota Cup heartbreak for Chiefs in penalty defeat to Kotoko

KAIZER Chiefs midfielders Thabo Cele and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo compete with Emmanuel Antwi of Asante Kotoko during 2025 Toyota Cup match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. | BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Kaizer Chiefs closed off their pre-season with a 3-2 penalty shootout defeat to Ghanaian powerhouse Asante Kotoko in the Toyota Cup at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday evening. It was a frustrating end to a match in which Amakhosi dominated large spells but failed to convert their superiority into goals, eventually succumbing in front of a capacity crowd in Durban—one of the club's spiritual homes. The encounter ended goalless in regulation time despite promising signs, especially in the first half where Chiefs controlled proceedings. New recruits Nkanyiso Shinga, Thabiso Monyane and Flavio Silva were handed starts, with expectations high ahead of the new Betway Premiership campaign. Midfield maestro Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, trusted by coach Nasreddine Nabi, ran the show alongside Thabo Cele as Chiefs zipped the ball around with confidence. However, the lack of a cutting edge upfront kept Kotoko in the contest. After the break, Nabi introduced Pule Mmodi, Mduduzi Shabalala and Wandile Duba in place of Cele, Mfundo Vilakazi and Silva. Mmodi immediately added spark to the attack, gliding past his marker before teeing up Glody Lilepo, whose poor first touch saw the chance vanish. Chiefs appeared destined for a late winner when Mmodi was brought down inside the box in the 84th minute, earning a penalty. But defender Inacio Miguel sent his effort wide, leaving the thousands in attendance stunned. With the match deadlocked at 0-0 after 90 minutes, penalties were needed to settle the tie. Chiefs missed three of their five spot kicks, and Kotoko made no mistake in capitalising. The result, though not disastrous, is a reminder that while Chiefs may be showing signs of progress, sharpness in front of goal remains a work in progress heading into the new season. Reflecting on the encounter after the game, Chiefs head coach Nabi Nasdreddine presented a positive figure in front of the media following what he described as a performance to be pleased about despite the conclusion. "It's true we had opportunities to win the game in the 90 minutes and as well as the penalty shootout and we didn't and that's why we suffered defeat but in a general sense, I was very pleased with the performance," he said. "We have another two weeks that we need to take full advantage off and thats exactly what we're going to do." Amakhosi have lost five out of their six pre-season encounters following their tour of the Netherlands and have scored just two goals in the process with their forwards yet to find their footing in front of goal. Nabi waved away any concerns around these facts as he looked to focus more on his side's preparation rather than the final results. "It's friendly games, we're not going to comment much about friendly games." Kotoko is one of the sides Chiefs may encounter in the CAF Confederation Cup this season following their triumph in the Nedbank Cup. Comment on the challenge of the visitors, Nabi appreciated receiving first-hand experience of that level at this early stage of the season. "Everyone on the continent knows what Asante Kotoko represent and what they're about so we really appreciate the competition they've given us today and it will help us in our progression."

Chiefs lose on penalties to Kotoko in Toyota Cup

It's too early to make any conclusions, but Kaizer Chiefs showed some positive signs in their last big preseason Toyota Cup friendly played against Ghanaian side Asante Kotoko at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday. Kotoko won 3-2 on penalties after Wandile Duba, Aden McCarthy, Pule Mmodi and Chiefs skipper Miguel Inacio failed to convert their spot kicks. But overall, Chiefs' display indicated they could be better in the 2025-2026 campaign which will be Nasreddine Nabi's second season with the Glamour Boys. Chiefs could have won the matches in 90 minutes had Inacio not missed after Chiefs were awarded a penalty five minutes before the end. One aspect where maybe Chiefs produced some degree of improvement was in defence, an area where they were most vulnerable last season as they conceded 32 goals in 28 Betway Premiership matches. 🏆 𝕋𝕠𝕪𝕠𝕥𝕒 ℂ𝕦𝕡 🏆 🎙️ Asante Kotoko coach Abdul-Karim Zito reflecting on their #ToyotaCup match against Kaizer Chiefs! 🚨 LIVE 📺 SABC 1 📱 #SABCSportFootball @KaizerChiefs — SABC Sport (@SABC_Sport) July 26, 2025 Nabi included three new players, Thabiso Monyane at right back, Nkanyiso Shinga at left back and Portuguese striker Flavio da Silva, in the starting lineup against Kotoko, who at times proved to be a handful for Amakhosi. Shinga certainly looked solid in a position where Nabi struggled to get a regular player last season. Physically the Durban born Shinga showed he is not an easy beat and at times supported Glody Lilepo in attack. Monyane, signed from Chiefs' Soweto archrivals Orlando Pirates, was the usual overlapping self, also very keen to help when his new team attacked but his poor final ball will need to improve. It was clear to see the growth of McCarthy who was playing alongside Inacio in front of goalkeeper Brandon Peterson who seemed to be the much-preferred no.1 by Nabi these days. It was in the midfield where Chiefs battled to create clear openings, but Sibongiseni Mthethwa showed why Nabi preferred him in the defensive midfield role as he helped clean up when Thabo Cele, Mfundo Vilakazi and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo lost possession. There were a lot of people who had already written off Da Silva before this match, but he did show some glimpses of being a good target man and his movement off the ball was not bad. Da Silva nearly gave Chiefs the league midway through the first half when he connected with Ngcobo's free kick but was unlucky to see him missing the posts. Nabi made a couple of changes at the restart as he was keen to test as many players in what was basically the last proper pre-season match before they open their league campaign away to Stellenbosch FC in Cape Town on August 10. Da Silva made way for Wandile Duba, Mduduzi Shabalala came on for Cele while Pule Mmodi took Vilakazi's place. Duba was unlucky to see his delightful strike hitting the upright just 10 minutes after he had entered the fray in a pitch which looked in need of a tender care a week before the start of the football season. Nabi will be happy that his substitutes Shabalala and Mmodi combined in creating the penalty that Inacio missed. The referee Philangenkosi Khumalo pointed to the spot after Mmodi was fouled by Henry Ansu, with Shabalala having played him through with a headed pass.
